It's sugar coated for the sake of children but still entertaining.

Warning: Spoilers
Veggie Tales is one of my favorite shows from childhood and I still enjoy it today. My favorites include Where's God When I'm Scared, Dave And The Giant Pickle, The Toy That Saved Christmas, Very Silly Songs, etc. and this one is in there too but I have a love/hate thing for it. First of all it gives me creeps. In the very first episode of Veggie Tales Junior Asparagus was facing his fear of "the monsters on tv" and in this one he's facing one for real. He's five years old and he's in a situation where he could very likely be a monster's lunch. The idea of a five year old in that sort of situation sounds terrifying. The Fib is an alien who pretends to be friends with Junior and encourages him to lie about breaking his father's bowling plate ensuring him that "a little fib couldn't hurt anyone" but eventually the lie grows out of control and becomes a monster. Junior is visibly frightened when he first sees the Fib for the first time in monster form but he takes it surprisingly well compared to real life where a kid would most likely be screaming, crying, and begging not to be eaten and put down. Junior acts more like a damsel in distress than a kid in danger. It baffles me how sugar coated this episode is but I understand it's for the kids. I know it's for comedic purposes but an officer would not run away in fear in a situation like this in real life. I don't think fainting and staring up at a water tower would be all that parents do in this sort of situation. I think they would also be stressed, crying, and yelling at police officers, etc to do their jobs. They would be a lot like Mel Gibson and Rene Russo in Ransom. It's so far fetched that the city is only relying on a superhero who doesn't have super powers and that Junior actually saves but as I've said it's for kids. What else baffles me is that when Junior is rescued his parents don't ask him if he's okay or hug him in desperation because they almost lost him. Junior just apologizes and they go home. He seems okay but if I was close to being eaten I would be in therapy. Okay this episode is extremely toned down for kids but I still enjoy it. It's fun, exciting, and actually has some funny parts. It does give me the creeps and I don't watch it very often but I still think it's one of the best Veggie Tales and Larry Boy episodes.

Definitely a Veggie Classic...but definitely NOT for all kids.

Warning: Spoilers
This is one old school VT video filled with the satisfactory amount of humor and pop culture references. This is one episode I love for the hard work Big Idea put into it. However, I'm not speaking from a nostalgic perspective, because unlike the other older VT videos, I don't have the most pleasant memories surrounding this one.

I first saw this episode as a preschooler, and it gave me nightmares for YEARS. I'm still recovering as an adult, so I watch occasionally the video to help me get over the old fear. Turns out that others in the VT fan base have stories parallel to mine. Before I give this episode its praises, I have to give reasons to why the grown folks need to take precaution before showing it to kids (particularly those under 8 years old). This is probably the darkest video in VeggieTales history, even more so than "Rack, Shack, & Benny"-(1995). There's barely any daylight depicted in this LarryBoy adventure, and the sky backgrounds used are freakishly realistic. Larry acts too serious and not as goofy, which may be off putting for some Larry fans (this was even a criticism that Big Idea received about this episode). But the biggest concern here is with the villain of the story, The Fib from Outer Space. Fib is a space alien who appears cute at first, but the more Junior Asparagus lies, Fib grows bigger. Eventually, Fib turns monstrous and destroys the town. Frighteningly enough, he attempts to eat LarryBoy...AND CAN BE SEEN WITH LARRYBOY IN HIS MOUTH. Talk about traumatic. For this reason, if you know little kids that are very sensitive to this kind of material, please DO NOT show them this episode until they're older.

For the positive, this episode presents a great analogy of what happens when lies get out of control; for us in the adult world, lies can lead to deaths, which is probably what the writers were getting at by having Fib wanting to eat LarryBoy and Junior...but that's WAAYYY too heavy for 5- year olds. Additionally, this one can be more entertaining for teens and adults since it pays homage to sci-fi movies and Batman, not to mention the score for this episode was EPIC! Lastly, the LarryBoy theme song performed by Christian recording artist Nicole C. Mullen...TIMELESS!

Overall, this VT video is best suited for those 8 years old and over, but if you insist on showing this episode to a much younger child, thorough conversation about the episode's theme (as well as the line between fantasy and reality) is needed.

Larry-Boy is pathetic
bobojiggler7 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I like this movie a lot, but Larry-Boy is pathetic. Larry-Boy does not know how to be a superhero. Whenever he fights crime, he always needs help from Alfred. In this movie and the one with the rumor weed, other people were the ones that saved the day. In this film, Junior Asparagus stopped the fib by telling everyone the truth. In Larry-Boy and the Rumor Weed, the rumor weed was stopped by Junior letting everyone know that the rumor wasn't true. Larry-Boy could have been left out of both because he didn't do anything. What superhero doesn't know how to handle his or her equipment without help constantly? Why couldn't Alfred be the superhero in both movies?

The Debut of Larry-boy!
The_Light_Triton22 October 2007
Veggietales Covers many topics, this one about telling the truth. and it also produces one of Veggietale's most loved characters...The one and only, Larry-boy! Larryboy patrols the streets of Bumblyburg everyday, usually not finding much to do, until one day, something from space lands in bumblyburg. larryboy has to find it and neutralize it, but unfortunately, it's hiding in young junior asparagus's home. and while junior and laura carrot are having a tea party, junior is short of one plate for Mr. snuggly, his teddy bear. so he climbs up the bookcase to grab a collectable plate hit dad owns...the plate is "arfogottie" (i think thats how it's spelled" and boasts "the greatest bowler to ever roll the ball, only 200 plates made, it's collectable." and while he tries to grab it, it falls off the top of the bookcase and smashes on the floor. laura immediately runs home, and junior is stuck alone. then the alien, called fib, emerges. he convinces junior to lie about the plate, claiming "oh, a little fib doesn't hurt anyone." of course thats a lie, because junior's little fib grows...literally and figuratively.

yes, the topic of lying. anyone could learn a lesson from this, not just Christian's. never lie, because that little fib's gonna grow, eventually, you'll have to lie again when someone else gets mad at your lie. add the 2 fibs. they grow. then, it gets so big, only the truth can get you out of it.

9 out of ten.

Missing a lot here
Horst_In_Translation3 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Larry-Boy! And the Fib from Outer Space!" is another VeggieTales short film and this one is from 1997, almost 20 years old, or maybe older already when you read this review. In any case, it is not one of the earliest from the series, but certainly one of the earlier entries. However, I was slightly disappointed by Phil Vischer's work here. In my opinion, these 30 minutes missed some of the core elements that made the franchise so popular. Instead, this one goes a different path that many mediocre animated films these days go: lots of noise, action and many (failed) attempts at humor. The positive lesson aspect is missing almost entirely in here and the references to that regard are not memorable at all. As a consequence, there is also no real heart in here and this is usually the strength of other VeggieTales. The animation I was also not too fond of. Like the more traditional path from older VeggieTales films. As a whole, I do not recommend checking it out. One of the weakest installments I have seen so far and it baffles me that this has such a high rating here on IMDb and is generally among the most known from the franchise. It is not a success. Don't watch.
