In a new interview in The Hollywood Reporter, buried in the mix of the somewhat suspect history of Goop, its monetary projections and recent round of investments, and what basically amounts to a regurgitation of Gwyneth Paltrow‘s business plan, you’ll find the curious statement that Paltrow is, “putting acting on the back burner.” Though that’s really rather glossed over, it’s an odd note if you’re paying enough attention to catch it. While THR isn’t exactly the kind of medium to avoid things like relationship news, general celebrity gossip, and other stretches on the idea of “reporting” on “Hollywood,” there’s always been something mostly “serious” about THR.
When an interview with a personality, even one who is certainly connected to the industry in general, includes the idea that said personality is putting acting (read: Hollywood) on the back burner, you might wonder why you...

The advertising watchdog non-profit Truth in Advertising (Tina) has filed a complaint with two California district attorneys and claim that Gwyneth Paltrow‘s company, Goop, has engaged in making deceptive health claims in order to sell their products. In an investigation by the non-profit, at least 51 instances of false advertising have been propagated by Goop, […]

Nonprofit group Truth in Advertising claims Goop is exploiting women by marketing products ‘as having the ability to treat diseases and disorders’
Goop, the lifestyle and publishing company founded by Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow, is facing new criticisms from an advertising watchdog for making false claims promoting almost 50 products, including a Carnalian crystal claimed to treat infertility and the now-infamous jade vaginal egg promoted as preventing uterine prolapse.
The new claims against Goop were lodged with two California district attorneys connected to the California Food, Drug and Medical Task Force by Truth in Advertising (Tina), a nonprofit group that says it conducted an investigation into Goop for using “unsubstantiated, and therefore deceptive, health and disease-treatment claims to market many of its products”.

Gwyneth Paltrow's love-to-hate/hate-to-love lifestyle site Goop is firing back at a plethora of claims made by media watchdog group Truth In Advertising (Tina) on Tuesday. Earlier today, a spokesperson for Goop told E! News, "Goop is dedicated to introducing unique products and offerings and encouraging constructive conversation surrounding new ideas. We are receptive to feedback and consistently seek to improve the quality of the products and information referenced on our site. We responded promptly and in good faith to the initial outreach from representatives of Tina and hoped to engage with them to address their concerns." The statement continued, "Unfortunately, they provided limited...

There’s no denying the popularity of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, but a U.S. watchdog group is coming after the growing lifestyle brand for making health claims about its products that they say are “unsubstantiated” and even “deceptive.” In a press release issued Tuesday by Truth in Advertising (Tina), the watchdog organization dedicated to ferreting out false […]...

Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Goop is under fire from watchdog group Truth in Advertising for “deceptive” health claims on over 50 of their products.
Truth in Advertising (Tina) announced Tuesday that they’ve investigated Goop’s marketing tactics, and found that “the company claims, either expressly or implicitly, that its products (or those it promotes) can treat, cure, prevent, alleviate the symptoms of, or reduce the risk of developing a number of ailments,” according to a press release.
“The problem is that the company does not possess the competent and reliable scientific evidence required by law to make such claims,” the release says.

The new Ghostbusters uses the same iconic logo of the original 1984 film, with a few minor differences: the new one is beveled, and shiny. Such is the essential difference between this new remake and the beloved classic of our childhoods. Truth in advertising! Literally bursting from its own letterboxed framing (the black bars at the top and the bottom of the screen are there only for show) with 3D proton blasts and flying ghoulish swishiness regularly firing off screen, a la the tiger from Life of Pi. The film is utterly stuffed with stuff, yet chock full of the kind of humor we've come to expect from stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as led by co-writer and director Paul...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Where's Luke Skywalker? That question rang across social media when Mark Hamill's familiar face was (apparently) not seen in the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, though some have speculated that he's in an earlier teaser as a hooded figure (above). Director J.J. Abrams says "these are good questions to be asking. I can't wait for you to find out the answers," teasing it's "no accident' that Skywalker is missing from the footage that's been revealed so far. [Heat Vision] Truth in Advertising: Ryan Reynolds is in final negotiations to star in Truth in Advertising. The movie is described as a comedy-drama about an ad man who begins to question his choice of profession after his boss...

Walmart was forced to apologize to customers on Tuesday after it was discovered that their website had designated a “Fat Girl Costumes” page in their Halloween section.
Walmart.com Features 'Fat Girl Costumes'
On Monday, the news that Walmart.com featured a “Fat Girl Costumes” section went viral after a reader informed Jezebel of the unsavory category. The section listed many plus size options for women, including a Snow White and a sexy devil.

Here's a roundup of the Austin film news from the past week or so:
On Tuesday, the Harry Ransom Center at Ut opens its latest exhibit, "The Making of Gone with the Wind." The Austin Chronicle has some background about why the Hrc has the materials to make it a strong exhibit. Back in the day, I read everything I could get my hands on about the movie and while I no longer adore Margaret Mitchell's novel or Selznick's cinematic epic, I still can't wait to get to the Hrc.Fantastic Fest update: There are so many Fantastic Fest news updates that I can't keep up with them. Truth in advertising is such a rare commodity that Big Ass Spider! gets one of its eight legs up on the competition because of it. Clearly, director Mike Mendez and his collaborators behind the camera completely buy into the idea of a cheerful, R-rated monster movie, something with the spirit of Joe Dante's Piranha or Lewis Teague's Alligator, both scripted in part by John Sayles. Those two movies updated 50s creature features for the more cynical crowd of the late 70s and early 80s, yet respected their varied inspirations as the stuff of which nuclear nightmares are made. Big Ass Spider! has fun with the idea of a giant spider terrorizing Los Angeles, mostly by centering the film around the unlikely heroic duo of expert...

The marketing team at Focus Features apparently hasn't noticed that "The Place Beyond the Pines" has one of the most good-looking casts of this movie year -- or any other, for that matter. Why struggle with how to sell Derek Cianfrance's latest multi-layered mopey melodrama when you can just embrace the age-old practice of Truth in Advertising? This isn't rocket science, people.
The most honest (or most shameless, however you want to look at it) approach is usually the most effective. Compare our poster to the original and tell us which would get more asses in the seats.

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is regularly one of the busiest actors working, often having two or three of his movies being released within months of each other, as is the case this year, with Salmon Fishing in the Yemen being his third movie released this year. Based on the best-selling novel by Paul Towdry, it was adapted by Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy ( Slumdog Millionare , The Full Monty ) and directed by Lasse Halström ( Dear John , Chocolat ), with McGregor playing Dr. Alfred Jones, a government fisheries scientist persuaded into helping Emily Blunt's enthusiastic rep of a wealthy sheik into trying to figure out a way of making salmon fishing possible in the arid environment of the Middle East. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? I'll get this out of the way now: Harry Potter is not on this list. Grasshopper CEO Suda 51 is at the helm of this one, bringing along the same referential, winking tone that he injected into his previous titles. Because it seems virtually impossible to write about anything this weekend without bringing Harry Potter into it, let's get it over with. The wizard is set to smash nearly every opening weekend record: $43.5 million for midnight screenings, and $92.1 million in the first day. It's put a stake in the heart of that sparkling vampire on those records, and looks to clip the wings of The Dark Knight, which grossed merely $158 million in its opening weekend. Potter is on track to rake in $187 million.
In a truly odd ruling issued minutes after the court closed for the weekend, the Ninth Circuit split the difference on Don't Ask, Don't Tell, reinstating the stay that keeps the law on the books, but barring the military from investigating or separating soldiers under the law. I really can't imagine how much uncertainty this creates for people who just want to serve their country.

It shines a light on the people of Coal River Mountain, West Virginia, who are battling against Masse Energy to stop a practice called Mountain Top Removal. Rather than mine for the coal, Masse simply blows the top off the mountain to access the fuel. Robert F. A lot of people assume that all famous stars know each other — that it's like one big club they all belong to and anytime they see each other they all act like old friends. But truth be told this is not the case. In our travels we often see people at red carpet events introducing themselves to another actor or being star struck by a fellow celebrity. To us one of the most interesting things is seeing who really does know who and figuring out the connection — a kind of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game we like to play.
So imagine our glee when we found out about a Tumblr blog called "Awesome People Hanging Out Together." The images are of random stars doing exactly what the title implies — hanging out together. Some are odd but self explanatory like Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart cooking on her show.

Year in Review
Nathaniel: Hey kids. So some time ago I was introduced to Mark Blankenship who writes The Critical Condition. I've been reading that blog ever since. Mark writes about everything pop culture -- I love his music posts especially -- and he's now officially a "talking head" having done a couple of Joy Behar Show gigs. We decided to have a little year in review convo. Part one is here at The Film Experience and tomorrow Critical Condition will run Part two. Got it?
Mark: Hi Nathaniel!
Nathaniel: Hey you.
Mark: With Hurricane Award Season upon us and year-end lists popping up everywhere, I thought it would be fun to look back at the year in movie promotion. In 2010, which trailers, posters, and campaigns were the best? Which ones were the worst?
In the category of Worst Promotion of a Good Movie, I'll nominate Despicable Me. I mean.

Adam Lambert was relaxing on South Beach yesterday, minding his own business while wearing his grandmother’s hat, when a particular paparazzi just wouldn’t leave him alone, even after Adam asked him to leave. So Adam got physical with the pap. His friends restrained him, and no one got hurt, but we probably haven’t heard the last of this. In the ultimate irony, the pap who took pictures of the pap getting roughed up probably got paid more.
Ryan Murphy (Glee) is teaming up with Howard Gordan (24) to create a new high-concept drama dealing with people’s fears. Not much more is known, but with the names involved, it’s almost a lock for series.
The Black Eyed Peas are rumored for half-time at the Super Bowl.

I almost never cover box office here for these reasons:
It's covered so extensively elsewhere you'd think it was the most important thing about movies. It's not.$$$ has zero correlation to quality. And sometimes even not that much correlation to perceived quality (Witness how many people flock to sequels of films they didn't love, expecting not much at all. I'm guilty here, too... I've dubbed it The Blockbuster Loop)
Covering it only adds to the problem of 'the tipping factor', wherein something that is successful becomes even more successful (even if total crap) merely because people see the success and intuit that they're supposed to be into it (Twilight, anyone?).
I find it nearly impossible to manipulate the masses to my way of thinking. Curses! They wear deflector shields to ward off my psychic will. If I ever find a chink in those shields, suddenly everyone will be buying tickets...
