The Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with animation ever since Mickey Mouse's debut in 1928's "Steamboat Willie." Almost 100 years later and Disney is not so much a little mouse but an enormous whale lunging through the media landscape and devouring properties such as Marvel, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios.Disney's holdings are so vast that its catalog ranges from "Bambi" and "A Bug's Life" to "Predator," "Die Hard," "Family Guy," and "The Simpsons," but that doesn't mean the company hasn't tripped up. On the contrary -- many Disney films have been financial blunders, even beloved works such as "Pinocchio," the initial failure of which caused Walt Disney to be, according to his friend and colleague Joe Grant, "very, very depressed."
The fortunes of "Pinocchio" have changed since its release in 1940 -- numerous rereleases pulled its lifetime grosses to over $120 million -- but that can't be said of other Disney productions.

At the risk of sounding like the little boy in "The Emperor's New Clothes," I feel I must blurt out a few truths about Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight: it's ridiculously overlong, needlessly shot in Ultra Panavision 70, and (dare I say it?) downright boring at times. But as Tarantino has an accommodating patron in Harvey Weinstein and no one looking over his shoulder, if he chooses to stretch out a talky mostly sedentary story past the three-hour mark, and shoot it in a 70mm widescreen format better suited to outdoor epics, so be it. And if he wants the great Ennio Morricone to compose a score (including an overture), that also comes to pass....

Russell Brand has teamed up with Michael Winterbottom for a new film.
The Emperor's New Clothes will be a political documentary about the social differences that led to the financial crisis.
Winterbottom will direct the film, which will be a mixture of comedy, archive footage and interviews.
Brand hopes to show how "the people at the bottom are paying for the luxuries of those at the top", according to producers StudioCanal.
The comic will present the documentary, while looking at financial centres in cities including London and New York.
Brand has taken to political activism in recent months, publishing the book Revolution in which he advocates the abolition of "corporate tyranny, ecological irresponsibility and economic inequality".
Speaking about the film on BBC Radio 4's Front Row last week, Winterbottom said: "It's about inequality and why the 1% seem to have so much and the rest of us not quite so much.

A few months back, it was announced that the upcoming Terminator sequel, with a tentative shoot date of January, would in fact be a reboot, the first in a standalone trilogy. Not much is known about the plot at this stage, other than Arnold Schwarzenegger will again be appearing, but the movie is moving forward, with Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor in talks to helm. Best known for directing several episodes of Game of Thrones (most notably, the last two of season one and first two of season two), the Thor sequel is(set for release in October) his first blockbuster feature, mostly working on dramas like Palookaville and The Emperor's New Clothes pre GoT, and obviously something about it impressed Paramount enough to offer him the keys to the classic franchise. Terminator is set for release June 26th 2015. via Variety...

Alan Taylor has officially claimed the iron throne. The "Game of Thrones" director, whose big-budget Marvel project "Thor: The Dark World" opens this fall (the footage we saw at D23 was officially "quite good"), has been named the director of the next "Terminator" film from Annapurna Pictures and Paramount. The next entry in the time traveling cyborgs franchise is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2015, along with every other huge movie ever. Taylor is one of those directors who has seen it all: after directing small scale character dramas like "Palookaville" and the Ian Holm-as-Napoleon movie "The Emperor's New Clothes," he transitioned to television, where he got a steady gig directing for prestigious pay cable channel HBO, helming episodes of "Sex and the City," "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under," "Carnivale," "Deadwood," "Rome," "Big Love," "Boardwalk Empire" and, most memorably, the first two seasons of "Game of Thrones,...

As Sinead O'Connor once mused on "The Emperor's New Clothes," "How could I possibly know what I want when I was only 21?"
Well, Taylor Swift has hit 22, and she knows exactly what she wants: to ditch scenes with "too many cool kids" and to be "happy, free, confused and lonely in the best way."
In her new song for "22," the Grammy-bedazzled singer explores being 22 and why it's apparently a total blast. Do we sign on to this vision of young adulthood? Check out the lyrics video below to see.
In the actual music video for "22," she's also seen eating cake and sitting on the shoulders of her friends, who are riding Schwinns.
I bring this up because the only pseudo-issue I've ever had with Taylor Swift concerns her age. When Lauryn Hill released the introspective, soulful, and very adult blockbuster The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, she was 23. Alanis Morissette was...

"I’ve been developing Stanley Kubrick’s screenplay," Spielberg said in a recent interview, "for a miniseries not for a motion picture — about the life of Napoleon. Kubrick wrote the script in 1961, a long time ago."
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the latter stages of the French Revolution and its associated wars in Europe. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1815. His legal reform, the 'Napoleonic Code', has been a major influence on many civil law jurisdictions worldwide, but he is best remembered for his role in the wars led against France by a series of coalitions,...

Like it or not, filmmaking is undeniably a director's medium. It wasn't always like that, of course: it was only the coming of the auteur theory in the 1950s and 1960s that popularized the idea of the director as the person responsible for all that was great and terrible about a picture. And while anyone who's worked in film knows that it's a collaborative medium, there's still no better way of seeing where the form might be going in the next few years than by looking at the directors who've been making splashes of late.
So, hot on the heels of our On The Rise pieces focusing on actors, actresses and screenwriters, we've picked out ten directors who've arrived in a big way in the last year or so, and look set for even greater things in the near future. Any tips of your own? Let us know in the comments section below.

A great conversation between women can be a revealing, endearing and helpful exchange. Trying to capture this on television is often the opposite; too many people talk at once, and someone is usually promoting a project.
Lifetime's "The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet," premiering Thursday, April 26, is singular. De Cadenet has hit upon a terrific concept.
She talks to one woman at a time in her Los Angeles living room. As they converse, they share what women do when cameras aren't rolling; they talk about love, marriage and children. For those weary of movie stars showing up on every morning and late-night show to pitch their latest projects, this is a lovely respite: No one promotes anything!
"The idea came about from my own desperate need to find role models that I could relate to," de Cadenet tells Zap2it. "And I just couldn't see them anywhere. I had to...

It may sound like an adaptation of "The Emperor's New Clothes" but James Franco's new art project with Praxis (Brainard and Delia Carey), a conceptual art duo from New York, is very real. The project is called the Museum of Non-Visible Art (Mona) and has people wondering if it's "either an example of subtle creativity, an extremely shallow con, or a hoax. "
On its Kickstarter campaign website, the project is described as: As an extravaganza of imagination, a museum that reminds us that we live in two worlds: the physical world of sight and the non-visible world of thought. Composed entirely of ideas, the Non-Visible Museum redefines the concept of what is real. Although the artworks themselves are not visible, the descriptions open our eyes to a parallel world built of images and words. This world is not visible, but it is real, perhaps more real than the world of matter,...

Questions about how effective antidepressants are have swirled for years, but some new research suggests people who take the drugs are actually more likely to experience relapses of depression. Casey Schwartz reports.
In the pendulum-swinging debate over the effectiveness of antidepressants, the latest findings by some researchers will not be good news for users and supporters of the ubiquitous meds: Used over the long term, antidepressants may "do more harm than good," and once discontinued are more likely to cause a relapse in the patient-more so than with a patient taking a placebo.

"There are data now that suggest that the longer the period of administration, the more likely the patient will relapse," says Dr. Giovanni Fava, a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Bologna in Italy, who has been looking at this possibility for nearly 20 years. His latest article,...

Brian Cox treats us to the Wonders Of The Universe, while The Ricky Gervais Show returns to the UK. Here's our UK TV look-ahead...
Last year around this time, the BBC treated viewers to a science show with a difference in Wonders Of The Solar System. The difference was in the anti-stuffy presenter, Professor Brian Cox, whose simple, but sensible demonstrations elucidated more in one hour than a whole term of school for some. Ryan reviewed the show saying, "Cox's enthusiasm for his subject is infectious, and while a physics professor talking about science in jeans and t-shirt may sound like a school teacher's toe-curling attempt to get down with the kids, his casual approach to explaining science is refreshing, rather than condescending."
You can read those reviews here and Professor Cox returns with a new series, Wonders Of The Universe, Sunday, March 6th at 9:00 on BBC2, which we'll also be reviewing.

Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!
What's that buzzing? No, it's not Brundlefly waking up. No, it's not those bees that bothered Nic Cage and his bear suit in The Wicker Man remake. It is, of course, Oscar buzz and it's buzzing out of every media outlet imaginable with a vengeance! Buzz buzz buzz!
And what's the buzz? Tell me what's a-happenin'. Well, it isn't about all the great motion pictures that have been made and released recently, and it isn't about who and what is actually going to win an Academy Award. It's really all about what they're wearing.
Fashion, darling! This whole elaborate affair of industry circle jerking, gong giving and Hollywood high society is just an excuse to host a massive fancy dress party.
