Improvised
bbbl672 January 2003
I was surprised to see that the script was improvised by the cast during filming. This would explain the natural language used throughout the film. Obviously there was a good idea framework it was based around, otherwise it would've been just a mess. Truthfully, there are a few holes in the plot that never were explained, which could be as a result of the improvisation. Like for example, in the opening scene, we see our hero, Joseph, standing in front of his girlfriend, Laura, breaking up; this would not warrant any special attention except for the fact that Joseph was standing there totally naked, and Laura was totally clothed. Were they just having sex and she dumps him right afterwards? Did she just come in just as he was about go for a shower or something? It made no sense there was no need for Joseph to be totally naked, and the rest of the movie has very little to with sex, and more to do with relationships; I can only think the filmmakers put a nude scene in there to get an "R" rating, and get some controversy.

There are some brilliant touches in the movie. Check out the scene in the disco where our four friends go after a dinner out together. The disco is so loud that nobody can hear each other even while shouting at each other. All of the communications is done through exaggerated body language and lip-reading. I found it fun trying to figure out the dialogue of their body language, and make up the dialogue in my own head based on their body language.

Another scene that was great was when Bruce, the supposed one-woman man who dreams about other women, comes clean to his wife, Yumi. The reactions are totally unexpected during their dialogue, and it didn't come out in the way that I would've normally expected when a man and wife are discussing their infidelities. And the dialogue was entirely in Japanese too, so which added another unexpected twist to it.

Check it out.

The DJ Jack Show

Warning: Spoilers
Inertia started with a story by Sean Garrity. He then cast five actors and had them improvise an entire movie. Garrity then wrote a script based around the actors improv. This great idea is one of the many things that makes Inertia one of the best, funniest, original, and most entertaining movies of the year.

Inertia is described as being a love triangle involving four people. Leaving it at that is like saying Fargo is just a movie about a murder. Or like Jerry Maguire is about a sports agent. Or like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is only about Tim Travel. You might be wondering right now what Fargo, Jerry Maguire or Bill & Ted have to do Inertia. I'm kind of wondering that myself. I'll admit it now, I have sleeping problems and some times ramble about things that make no sense. But I do know I had a point to this.

Inertia has many subtle and brilliant layers to its story. All of it happens to be told around a love triangle with 4 people. To sum up the plot briefly without spoilers, Inertia is about contaminated water, adultery, obsession, the people of Winnipeg, an antique boomerang, and of course, a love triangle involving 4 people. And the best thing about Inertia is that it's filmed and takes place completely in my favorite city in the world, WINNIPEG! (the fact that it's my favorite city may have something to do with the fact that I've never left this city)

I'm totally convinced after seeing this movie that Sean Garrity could become one of Canada's most innovative new film makers.

If by now you're wondering what the subject title of this review "The DJ Jack Show" is supposed to mean, then I have only one thing to say to you. GO RENT IT AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF! I only have 1000 words to work with here!

Very Well Done
gharkis6 February 2002
I recently saw this movie, and I must say, I was very impressed. For a locally filmed, funded and produced movie, it was quite fluid, the story was impressive (albeit, a little contrived at points), and the acting was very good. I hope we can see more work by this crew (both production and actors/actresses) as well as more films being done locally.
