The film stars Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger and Jessica Lange.
Marlowe, directed by Neil Jordan and written by William Monahan, will have its world premiere at the closing gala of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Screening in official competition, Marlowe stars Liam Neeson as the titular private detective asked to hunt down the ex-lover of a mysterious blonde woman, played by Diane Kruger, in 1930’s Los Angeles. It is inspired by John Banville’s novel The Black-Eyed Blonde, based on the character of Philip Marlowe from the novels of Raymond Chandler.
Jessica Lange, Ian Hart, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Alan Cumming also star.

The past month was the year’s busiest at the box office with three of the year’s top five openers, and the past weekend saw four films gross above 10 million, a feat that surprisingly has not been achieved since last June. Things slow to a crawl this weekend, though, as we are one week out from the Marvel-in-waiting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which will kick off the summer box-office season. Though this week’s only new wide release is expected to open soft, there is still juice left to squeeze out of the current slate before the arrival of the first MCU film since Spider-Man: No Way Home. This may be the lowest grossing weekend since February, but a blockbuster packed summer is right around the corner.
The only film going wide this week is the Liam Neeson action-thriller Memory, getting a release by Open Road.

The first weekend of February had a solid rebound over the last two weekends of January, and this weekend should keep the trend going with the releases of Death on the Nile, Marry Me, and Blacklight. It is a busier than usual Super Bowl weekend which is typically quiet at the box office, often with no major new releases and massive Sunday drops. In an unusual twist, Valentine’s Day is falling one day after Super Bowl Sunday, so the studios are going for a field goal, if not a touchdown, and a strong Monday for the couple-friendly films could make up for the game day losses.

For the past two decades, Raphael Benoliel has been Hollywood’s man in France. With more than 40 projects under his belt, the Nice-born Benoliel has turned his Firstep production banner into a kind of one-stop-shop for international shoots, amassing line producer credits on projects as varied as “Les Miserables,” “Stillwater” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
And if last year might have been Firstep’s busiest year to date following back-to-back shoots of “Emily in Paris,” “John Wick: Chapter 4” and David Fincher’s “The Killer,” this year shows no signs of letting up, which makes the circumstances of Firstep’s founding all the more ironic.
“[Firstep co-founder] Dimitri Veret and I started the company with other goals in mind,” Benoliel tells Variety. “I was receiving [employment insurance] and didn’t necessarily need the money to get by, so we launched Firstep, using the benefits to finance our shorts.”

This weekend, the strong $70 million opening for “F9” dominated theatrical box office headlines. Streaming stories lack that clarity; opaque platform reporting makes it impossible for any single title to dominate. However, with fewer films released in theaters — two titles sold 77 percent of this weekend’s tickets — VOD’s diversity may reflect a greater share of the movie business.
This week saw standout performances for “Nobody” (Universal) and “Demon Slayer – Mugen Train” (Funimation) each taking two #1 spots on the four charts we track. Netflix’s $18 million domestic-only deal for Liam Neeson acquisition “The Ice Road” seems to have paid off with a top slot. Totals for Pixar’s “Luca” are unknown, but figure it is strong at Disney+; the studio’s “Cruella” also shows well as a new $29.99 Premium VOD.

Refresh for latest…: A significant week is ahead at the international box office as Universal’s F9 starts its engines in a handful of major markets including China, Russia and Korea — and as the UK and France will reopen cinemas after a roughly seven-month shutdown. In the meantime, Fast & Furious franchise alum Jason Statham’s Wrath Of Man was the main overseas Hollywood title this session, lifting its offshore cume to $41.4M for $56M global. After opening on a non-traditional Monday in China last week, the Miramax title from director Guy Ritchie rolled up an $18.5M take there through Sunday, landing in 3rd place for the Fss weekend.
Wrath Of Man is carrying an 8.6 on Maoyan with a lower 7 from critics at Douban. Statham is a big draw in the Middle Kingdom — his last two pics there (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and The Meg), grossed $201M and $153M,...

Updated with Saturday Am B.O.: There’s a great axiom when it comes to success in Hollywood; a saying which remains true through good times and bad, even at a moment when streaming is stepping on theatrical’s feet, and that is, “Talent rules.”
Such talent is Russian filmmaker Ilya Naishuller, whose Universal action movie Nobody literally turns the genre on its head.
Sure, it had a John Wick sensibility in its screenplay and is even penned by that franchise’s creator, Derek Kolstad. But shot-wise, angle-wise, and protagonist wise, Nobody shakes up the action space in an invigorating way. The movie headlines 58 year-old SNL alum-Mr. Show architect-turned-leading man wisenheimer Bob Odenkirk, who shows sublimely here that one is never, ever too old to be an action star.

Sunday Am Final: On one of the most difficult box office dates on the calendar, Super Bowl weekend, and also during a pandemic, Warner Bros.’ second weekend of its Denzel Washington-Rami Malek-Jared Leto thriller The Little Things made $2.1M at 2,206 theaters, -55% from its first weekend. That puts the pic’s running domestic total through ten days at $7.8M. As would be typical during any Super Bowl Sunday, don’t count on a lot of business today, especially for an R-rated movie aimed at older men.
Little Things’ second weekend drop is a bit more steep than the second weekend of Open Road’s Liam Neeson movies The Honest Thief (-43%) and The Marksman (-35%); in regards to the latter, that movie was coming off of MLK weekend. However, on a dollar basis, Little Things’ second weekend is in line with what those movies did in their second go-rounds,...

In a boost to cinemas, Roadshow’s local comedy-drama Rams has posted the third highest opening weekend post-covid, behind only Tenet and After We Collided.
Opening on 298 screens and earning $809,177 ($1.27 million with previews), Roadshow CEO Joel Pearlman has touted the result, arguing it proves Australian audiences are enthusiastic to return to cinemas.
A reimagining of 2015 Icelandic drama Hrútar, Jeremy Sims’ directs the Michael Caton and Sam Neill-starrer which follows two estranged brothers as they raise separate flocks of sheep descended from their family’s prized bloodline. When a rare disease threatens their stock, they have to work together to save their sheep, their small town and their family’s legacy.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Juliette Binoche’s search for midlife love is drenched in ennui and punctuated by weary philosophizing. There’s not a lot of satisfaction in it, nor much by way of resolution. Very French. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women

Which is in fact something of a comfort: if a woman of such luminousness, grace, and intelligence can’t find a man, then maybe it’s not us, but them. (Just kidding: We all already know it’s them.

The year of Baggins, Potter and Spider-Man also had a wealth of lesser-known movies. Here’s our pick of 2002's underappreciated films...

In many ways, 2002 set the tempo for the Hollywood blockbuster landscape, which has changed relatively little in the decade since. A quick look at 2013‘s top 10, for example, reveals a markedly similar mix of superhero movies, with Iron Man 3 still ruling the roost at the time of writing, followed by effects-heavy action flicks and family-friendly animated features.

Un Flic: Jean-Pierre Melville’s ‘late noir classic’ (photo: Alain Delon in Un Flic) Jean-Pierre Melville’s last film, Un Flic / A Cop (1972), is a late noir classic that features all the central trappings of the genre along with — what was then — a modern sensibility about the nature of who, ostensibly, are supposed to be the good guys. Perhaps it goes without saying they’re not much different than the bad guys; even so, as is the case in many Melville films, good guys and bad guys are mirrors of each other, the same yet different. Add to that several daring high-stakes criminal enterprises and, of course, a femme fatale (played beautifully by the beautiful Catherine Deneuve), and you’ve got a film that, while not the masterpiece of Melville’s canon, would have been so for most other filmmakers. Despite its title, Un Flic is as much about a very cool criminal,...

Neil Jordan’s body of work is an odd, fascinating beast. On one level, the Irish director’s fablelike films — with their often mystical elements, their vivid photography, and their tormented, passionate characters — are remarkably consistent in tone, style, and themes. On another level, though, the films are a diverse lot, ranging from moody dramas like Mona Lisa and The End of the Affair, to thrillers like The Crying Game and The Good Thief, to big-budget, star-studded epics like Interview With a Vampire and Michael Collins, to fairy tales like The Company of Wolves. He’s even made a couple of exuberant comedies along the way (including High Spirits, which is better than you remember). Now, with his latest, Byzantium, a tale of mother-and-daughter vampires (played by Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan) hiding out in a British seaside town, Jordan has returned to the vampire genre, and the result is...

In a career spanning more than three decades, Irish writer and director Neil Jordan has created some unforgettable movies. Some, such as his adaptation of Angela Carter's The Company Of Wolves, or Mona Lisa, or The Crying Game, are cult classics.
His glossy 1994 vampire movie Interview With The Vampire was his biggest box-office hit to date, with its starry cast - including Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt - and the popularity of Anne Rice's source novels behind it.
Since then, Jordan's brought a varied range of movies to the screen, from thrillers (In Dreams, The Brave One, The Good Thief) to dramas (The End Of The Affair, Breakfast On Pluto).

Despite getting modest to mediocre reviews from critics, Neil Jordan's Interview With A Vampire was a major hit when it was released back in the mid-90s. Armed with a cast led by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt and a large Ann Rice fanbase, the R-rated film opened at number one, made over $100 million domestically, and over $220 million worldwide. Jordan has kept away from the undead since, making movies like the war drama Michael Collins, the crime drama The Good Thief, and the revenge thriller The Brave One, but now he has dived back into the world of monsters with Byzantium. As you can see above, Apple has delivered the first ever trailer for the new vampire thriller, but that's not all. The site also has a new poster: In the film Saoirse Ronan stars as Eleanor, a vampire who lives with her mother Clara (Gemma Arterton). When the...

Before the whole vampire craze, director Neil Jordan crafted his relatively controversial film Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice's book. Now Jordan is heading back into bloodsucking territory with Byzantium, and a new domestic trailer shows the unique film isn't just capitalizing on a trend. With a story that spans centuries, two young vampires get into trouble in present day when Clara's (Gemma Arterton) brothel business and Eleanor's (Saoirse Ronan) relationship with a sick young boy (Caleb Landry Jones) threatens to expose their immortal secret and put their lives in jeopardy. Watch below! Here's the new trailer for Neil Jordan's Byzantium, originally from Apple: Byzantium is directed by Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan, of the films Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, The End of the Affair, The Good Thief, Breakfast on Pluto, The Brave One and Ondine previously, as well as work on "The Borgias". The screenplay was written by Moira Buffini,...

Just a couple months ago, we got our first glimpse at Neil Jordan's dark vampire drama Byzantium starring Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) and Saoirse Ronan (Hanna). With a story that spans centuries, these two young vampires get into trouble in present day when Clara's (Arterton) brothel business and Eleanor's (Ronan) relationship with a sick young boy (Caleb Landry Jones) threaten to expose their immortal secret and put their lives in jeopardy. This looks like the kind of vampire story that isn't just capitalizing on the vampire craze started by Twilight, and just might be a breath of fresh air this summer. Here's the new UK trailer for Neil Jordan's Byzantium from Yahoo UK: Byzantium is directed by Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan, of the films Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, The End of the Affair, The Good Thief, Breakfast on Pluto, The Brave One and Ondine previously,...

"If you lived with a secret, what would you do?" WestEnd Films has debuted the first international trailer for their new vampire thriller Byzantium, directed by Neil Jordan. The film stars Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan as two, ahem, young vampires (it's not really a spoiler here, even though they do keep it a "secret" in the film) living in a small town in England. Byzantium premiered at Tiff last year, where I first saw it, and it's a dark, seductive, bloody but entertaining film, worth giving a chance. Jonny Lee Miller, Caleb Landry Jones, Sam Riley and Tom Hollander also co-star. If that excites you, it may be for you! Watch the first international trailer for Neil Jordan's vampire film Byzantium, found by The Film Stage: Byzantium is directed by Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan, of the films Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, The End of the Affair, The Good Thief,...

It's been a while since Neil Jordan dipped back into the horror well. In the past decade he's tackled a glossy studio revenge movie ("The Brave One"), a mermaid tale ("Ondine"), a high-profile remake ("The Good Thief") and whatever the hell "Breakfast on Pluto" was. (He was also busy supervising the television series "The Borgias.") Well, Jordan is about to return to his roots with the vampire tale "Byzantium," set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. How about watching the first (squishy) clip? We're not sure exactly what's going in the clip, provided by Empire, but it features Saoirse Ronan's character Eleanor and Caleb Landry-Jones' Frank. Frank seems to be bleeding quite badly and Eleanor, a vampire, can't resist sucking at the bloody rags he leaves behind. Ick. It's a fairly gooey clip, and Ronan's garb shows off Jordan's penchant for fairy tale imagery...

Back in 2006, Nick Nolte co-starred in a small sports drama called Peaceful Warrior (not to be confused with the upcoming sports drama Warrior), as a mysterious trainer/gas station attendant named Socrates. It was not a strong film. Or a strong performance. It was, in fact, the end of a near half-decade’s string of not-strong performances in not-strong films.
This was nothing new. The man had slumped quite similarly in the mid-90s (watch the awful Mulholland Falls for proof). Then, after reviving his career in the late 90s with winning turns in both Paul Schrader’s superb Affliction (which earned him an Oscar nod) and Terrence Malick’s masterful The Thin Red Line, the actor got arrested in late 2002 for driving while intoxicated. To add insult to injury, there was a beautiful mugshot that came with the arrest, something that’ll never be erased from the Internet. To...

Here's one of several casting breaks to come your way in the next few hours, and this one is pretty damned good. Why? Because after the break you'll find info on the following: Nick Nolte takes a role in hard-boiled crime thriller Parker. Jesse Eisenberg plays dopplegangers in The Double. And Mark Ruffalo and Amanda Seyfried join the increasingly promising FBI vs magicians thriller Now You See Me. Parker is the latest film to bring Donald E. Westlake's famed thief to the screen. It can now boast another great name as Nick Nolte has been revealed as part of the cast. So we've got Jason Statham holding down the broad audience appeal playing Parker (star of more than 20 novels Westlake wrote as Richard Stark), and Jennifer Lopez, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael Chiklis and Wendell Pierce all in other roles. No word on who Nick Nolte plays, but I'll take...

...and then there's Nick Nolte, the two-time Academy Award nominee who seemed to be in every movie in the '90s and then hit a weird patch in the aughts where he was less in demand (even though 2002's "The Good Thief" features one of his finest performances), but seems to be be back to his ever-busy ways. While we'll ignore the fact that he was in "Arthur" and "The Zookeeper" this year, he's got the hotly buzzed "Warrior" and the highly anticipated Michael Mann/HBO series "Luck" on the horizon and he recently came aboard the Robert Redford/Shia Labeouf vehicle "The…...

Filmmaker Niel Jordan is going into production on a new female vampire called Byzantium, and he's cast Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) and Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) as the two lead vampires. The script for the film was written by Moira Buffini and it tells the story of a mother vampire who turns her own daughter into a vampire and the pair form a lethal partnership, sometimes posing as sisters.
This sounds like it could be a pretty sick and twisted vampire flick. A mother and daughter vampire team going out flirting with guys and then eating them, typical. Ronan and Arterton should be great in these roles. As for Jordan being director, he's previously worked on such films such as The Crying Game, Interview with a Vampire, Michael Collins, The Butcher's Boy, The End of the Affair, The Good Thief, and more. If you haven't seen the key films by Jean-Pierre Melville, now is a great time to change that. Movies like Bob le Flambeur, Le Samourai, Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge (The Red Circle) have inspired many notable filmmakers and are, simply, magnificent cinematic experiences. Remarkably, most of his major films have escaped being remade, though John Woo (a major Melville fan) has talked about remaking both Le Samourai and Le Cercle Rouge. The latter passed from his hands into those of Johnnie To, who had actors attached, then it went briefly to John Hillcoat. Now the Le Cercle Rouge remake is in entirely the wrong hands: those of Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra. Deadline [1] says that the Steve Knight script that was the backbone of the Johnnie To version is still in play at Working Title, and that the reins have been handed to Jaume Collet-Serra based on the...

Great heist films don’t come along often because the genre typically requires one of two things: an unexpected twist or elaborate scheme to keep the audience guessing or a taut game of cat and mouse with the crafty team just mere steps ahead of a tireless detective. Plot holes and less than satisfying pay-offs often prove ruination for the genre (Ocean’s 12, Ocean’s 13, Armored, etc.), and it really should come as no surprise. Attempting to thrill and/or fool a modern audience gets harder every year as they learn to look around the metaphorical corner for the trick, but that’s the way it’s supposed to be. If perfect heists were so easy to plan they’d be a lot more common in everyday life. Instead, we’re left to savor the occasional moment of brilliance when a film comes along that either holds an unforeseen ace...

Neil Jordan, who recently helmed "Ondine" and "The Brave One," will direct the big-screen adaptation of Paul Murray's "Skippy Dies." Variety says Jordan will also be in charge of writing the screenplay.
The story follows Ruprecht and Skippy, two roommates at a public school in Ireland. Ruprecht is a math wizard, and when Skippy dies, Ruprecht tries to find a scientific way to get in touch with the dead.
This doesn't sound like a new concept, but I'm sure Jordan can do a lot with the material. Jordan's credits also include "Breakfast on Pluto," "The Good Thief," "The Crying Game" and "The End of the Affair."...

A picture has been released by Splash News of Russell Brand in full costume and make-up from the NYC set of Arthur, a remake of the 1981 comedy which starred Dudley Moore as Arthur and Liza Minnelli as Linda.
And yes, he has no hair on that English face of his. It feels so weird seeing him looking clean shaven and serious, but that’s before we know what his role is.

Much of this demeanor has to do with the fact that he is vastly wealthy and the heir to a large fortune. It's been a while since I enjoyed a Neil Jordan film. The Brave One had its moments, but it was better in theory, ditto Breakfast on Pluto. I was at the Toronto premiere of The Good Thief, which wasn't terribly arresting, and actually, I think my favorite of his might have to be Mona Lisa, which is nearly 25 years old.
The odd thing is, I always kind of figured Jordan was one of those directors who made really good movies, and then I looked at his list of movies...it's really not that inspiring. Air Jordan is back with another one, the mermaid drama Ondine.
And yes, "mermaid drama" means exactly what you'd think it means, and is not some euphemism for a fish-out-of-water story. Although, come to think of it, that probably applies, too. But it's a mermaid, all right, and in the role of Tom Hanks: Colin Farrell.

Gambling and heist movies have an established place within the drama and thriller world. Audiences swooned for the Rat Pack in the original Ocean’s 11, and they did again when George Clooney and Brad Pitt took over the game. But not all gambling films are the same – there’s a sharp rift dividing the two types. In one, the heist is glamorized, the stars are sexy and the end result is a celebration of wit and elaborate planning. The other half easily ranks as the more interesting of the two; in it a down on his luck gambler goes after his last shot to make it big. The Good Thief with Nick Nolte and Rounders with Matt Damon keep you rooting for the underdog as he attempts to climb out of the hole circumstance has dug for him. Yonkers Joe continues this tradition and cuts closer to The Good Thief...

"My hope is that he has humanity, which is an interesting use of the word to describe an ogre." The director has no doubt he cast the right actor for the job.
