That little unicorn was actually quite big...

Warning: Spoilers
I am guessing they put little in the title because, "The Unicorn" did not have a nice ring to it? I am not sure what the deal was as the unicorn is not very small for very long in this one. The movie was also full of characters with little to no backstory, strange boarding school plot points and George Hamilton. Total insanity ensues as this film is a chuck it in a blender and see what happens type of film and if I had to take a guess, I would say it is made by the same company that did The Fairy King of Ar as it features the same type of strange and misshapen house that film did.

The story, a girl is at her granddad's house, well she leaves there, I think. Her mom picks her up at school, no wait, her aunt, who wants to send her to boarding school which is apparently very far away. Well, actually it is just on the other side of the county. Well a horse dies, but it gave birth to a sparkling blue unicorn, who the girl screams at, blaming it for the death of the horse, before she is apologizing to it for her reaction. Word gets out and soon people are trying to get the unicorn, and rather than try to offer money for it, they all resort to trying to steal it while little girl continues having strange reactions to things throughout the movie!

This film is just nuts as it makes no sense. You just cannot steal something, yet this film makes it out like they are leaving in some Mad Max dystopian future where if you gain something it is yours! Then there are poor reactions that make no sense, they see the unicorn take off and fly with little girl on its back, and yet act surprised when it starts to fly again at the end. They also seem to think that when the unicorn explodes it is free. Lots of actors in this to get a paycheck as we have David Warner and George Hamilton and a few more of note.

So, not a very good film as the effects are terrible given when this one is made and the unicorn is not little which is like false advertising! You have poor reactions by the actors which falls on the director and then you have things set up and nothing happens as I was sure that Hamilton or his assistant would have some sort of change of heart at the end, but nothing occurs and then you have a police officer that is apparently in love with the aunt and it was a strange relationship that seemed to come out of nowhere. This film most likely went nowhere as it is quite bad, but at least it gave us all such a visual feast of a unicorn exploding!

Warning: Spoilers
Where do movies take me? My lord, sometimes they take me to auteur projects like this one, by Paul Matthews, all about how a unicorn can fix up people's lives. Oh David Warner, you deserve better. Joe Penny, too. And man, as much fun as I make of George Hamilton showing up in movies that are horrifyingly bad - Sexette, Evel Knievel and Madusa, I'm looking at you - even he deserves better than this. Man, even Christopher Atkins - The Blue Lagoon anyone? - deserves better!

Polly and her grandfather's tranquil lives get nutty when her favorite mare dies. Yes, if you're getting this movie for a kid that loves horses, please know that a horse dies giving birth right off the beginning.

That said, it gives birth to a unicorn that everyone wants to steal. The rest of the film concerns Polly and her friend Toby trying to save it. Want to know how bad this is? Rifftrax hasn't just taken on one Paul Matthews film. They've also taken on The Fairy King of Ar and Berserker, so the guy definitely has an audience. Perhaps not the one he wants, but an audience nonetheless.

Yuck..

Pathetic family film with no-one will enjoy. Notable for the poor special effects and the incredibly annoying range of accents. Most amusing moment: When the plot hinges on the girl "BEING SENT TO A BOARDING SCHOOL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTY!" Oh no! That could be at least.. a dozen miles away!! Doh! Only recommended to those who like third-rate slapstick and washed-up old actors who can't get a decent gig anywhere else (Warner, Hamilton.. I'm looking at YOU) Note to the American makers: Next time, please get our country RIGHT!! I've run out of things to say but apparently there is a ten-line minimum so.. does anyone like The Darkness?? 1/10

A heart warming story of a girl and her magical companion
Magicpearl197417 September 2004
You don't expect to see Joe Penny in the role he is playing, however he does pull it of with passion. This just reminds you of the excellent actor he truly is. I must admit I did expect him to be the hero but alas he,s the adorably comical villain. After this role I can picture him in the wicked mustache and Penelope Pitstop being tied to the tracks ha ha. The little girl and her school allie are a delight it shows that sometimes

kids are smarter than adults we need to give them more credit. Emma Samms is good in her role but you don't expect her to be cold and aloof towards anybody, but she pulls of the role well. All around touching and heartwarming feel good movie for the whole family.

Joe is still sexy, he could never loose that.

Far from perfect, but a well meaning and amiable family drama
TheLittleSongbird8 December 2009
I admit it, I liked this movie. Sure it does have its problems, but it is very well meaning and is in general amiable family drama. While it is uplifting on the whole, there are also some dark issues like the death of the mare and the cruelty inflicted onto the unicorn.

The story is a little formulaic and clichéd(ie, the idea of Polly being sent to boarding school isn't exactly new territory)with some very long scenes involving the attempts to abduct the unicorn, and the script does have its ups and downs. And sometimes I worry that The Little Unicorn may be too old fashioned from an adult perspective.

However, there are some pluses. The costumes and the scenery are nice to look at, and the little unicorn of the title is simply adorable. And the acting was good; Britney Bonman is very spirited as Polly and David Warner proves what a great actor he is as her grandfather. Joe Penny makes for a quite ambitious but handsome villain, while Emma Samms looks gorgeous. Shame though that George Hamilton is given little to do as the failed magician. The music score was very nicely done though. I don't think the special effects were that bad, and the ending was sweet.

All in all, it is not perfect by all means, but it is worth watching. 7/10 Bethany Cox
