One of my favourite Don Giovannis
As far as Don Giovanni goes in terms of productions my favourites are still the Joseph Losey film and the 1987 production. That said, this 1990 Met production comes very close, as it is a wonderful production. The sets and costumes are simple and traditional yet look very effective, the direction is assured and the video directing is excellent. The story is dramatic and complex, the characters are wonderful with the titular character a very vivid and extraordinary character when performed well and Mozart's music from start to finish is sublime. The orchestra play with excellent style and James Levine's conducting is fine. The performances are excellent. Carol Vaness, Jerry Hadley, Karita Mattila and Dawn Upshaw are very solid as Donna Anna, Ottavio, Elvira and Zerlina, but my favourites are Ferruccio Furlanetto's blustering Leporello, Kurt Moll's powerful and quite intimidating Commendatore and especially Samuel Ramey's superb Don Giovanni. All in all, wonderful and one of my favourites. 10/10 Bethany Cox
