Summer heats up for the second time.
paudieconnolly14 December 2020
Tony schaivone with Jesse Ventura on commentary this year Jesse brilliant. always good at his best here. Brain busters (Champions )hart foundation to kick off the night Hart's really seem to be reaching there peak a very excited crowd no title on the line but some good wrestling and Bobby the brain always gets a good cheer from crowd. Music time honky tonk man and the American dream two men who know how to work the crowd shake the place up. Next Mr Perfect v the man who was rumored to be offered the part of perfect before becoming the red rooster. Then 6 man tag action with some high flyers. One year since electricity hit summerslam for the intercontinental title honky tonk man v ultimate warrior , this time round champion ravishing Rick rude must defend against electric the warrior put throughout the arena two great entertainers . who work well together plus the brain at ringside and pipes playing in the distance maybe not the greatest technical wrestling ,but at this point this is the take home match for the crowd to tell your friends you seen and felt the atmosphere even if through a tv set . Next axe smash and king duggen of the demolition take on the three towers another 6 man tag shows the number of great wrestlers on the books at this time. Valentine Hercules weakness match of the night and felt misplaced. May have worked better earlier. Snuka v $$$$ would recover the night before the main event "Hulkamania the most powerful force in the universe will never go down" Tony schaivone . With beefcake in his corner and miss Elizabeth he must face the seasoned ring veteran Randy Savage with the monster Zeus and Sherri in there corner all the fun and brilliance wrestling can bring something with a good story great moves don't always matter. The heat did rise as the second summer slam even better than the first.

Carried by it's main events...
markovd11112 March 2022
"Summerslam" of 1989 has cool main events featuring a fight between The Ultimate Warrior and The Ravishing Rick Rude and Hulk Hogan and Brutus The Barber Beefcake against Macho Man Randy Savage and Zeus, but everything else other than appearance of The Hart Foundation and Dusty Rhodes is mediocre and not really special. Gorilla Monsoon is also greatly missed as Ventura dominates Schiavone. All in all, 6.5/10, nothing too spectacular, but fun for the fans none the less.

There will be No Holds Barred on this night
bh_tafe314 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
They were the most powerful force in the history of wrestling. WWE Champion Randy Savage and former champion Hulk Hogan. But, just before Wrestlemania V that had all changed. Savage turned on Hogan, overcome by feelings of jealousy and inadequacy. Hogan then defeated Savage at Wrestlemania to win the WWE Championship in a thrilling contest. Savage was hurt by that loss and at Summerslam 1989, looked to end Hogan's career. Enlisting the help of the massive 7 foot monster Zeus to try and end Hulkamania forever.

But first there were other matters to be resolved.

FIrst up we get a good tag match as the Brainbusters Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson defeated the Hart Foundation. The Brainbusters had previously had great success in the NWA as part of the Four Horsemen along with Ric Flair and Barry Windham. They have a nice match here to open the show.

Next is NWA legend Dusty Rhodes defeating the Honky Tonk Man with the Bionic Elbow. HTM was fareing quite well until his manager Jimmy Hart came into the ring and accidentally hit him with a megaphone. Mean Gene has a quick word to Hacksaw Jim Duggan and then Mr Perfect defeats the Red Rooster to remain undefeated. We then have Bobby Heenan and Rick Rude assuring all of us that Rude's victory over The Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania V was no fluke and that Rude would walk out of Summerslam as STILL the WWE Intercontinental Champion.

Next up was the Rockers Shawn Micheals and Marty Janetty teaming up with Tito Santana and losing to the Rougeau brothers Jacques and Raymond, teaming up with Santana's former tag team partner Rick Martel. Martel pinned Janetty following shenanigans on the outside. All of these guys could go and this was an entertaining match.

Next up Mean Gene talks to the Ultimate Warrior who says some indecipherable gibberish. The general gist is that he was going to beat Rick Rude in the next match and become a two time Inercontinental Champion. And that's exactly what happened. This is actually a very good match.

Next we have another six man match, this time the good guys got up though with Jim Duggan and Demolition Ax and Smash defeating Andre the Giant with the Twin Towers Akeem and the Big Boss Man. Hacksaw hits Akeem with his 2 by 4 and Smash gets the pin.

Next up the Million Dollar Man reminds us all that everyone has a price and also that he was going to beat Superfly Jimmy Snuka later on tonight.

The most entertaining part of the next match was ring announcer Ronnie Garvin. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine pinned Hercules with his feet on the ropes. The ref noticed this and reversed his decision, meaning Hercules had won by disqualification.

Oh my goodness, he's back. Million Dollar Man and Virgil talk to Mean Gene again. Wow, I'd forgotten he had a match later, it must have been 10 minutes since he said that. Why complain? DiBiase was gold. But Randy Savage, Sherri Martel and Zeus wanted a word as well. They just wanted to say Hogan and Beefcake were going to get rolled later on tonight. Good stuff again.

Guess what? DiBiase really did beat Superfly Jimmy Snuka in the next match. A dodgy win thanks to a count out, but a win all the same.

Next up we have our main event heroes Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake. Hulkamania's the strongest force in the world. Even bigger than Zeus.

All the talking's over. Time for the main event and Zeus and Savage do themselves proud, dominating the match, but Hulkamania is stronger than both of them as Hogan hulks up and pins the mighty Zeus. Hogan and Beefcake get the win in a fun main event.

Well if the Mighty Zeus couldn't stop Hulk Hogan, then who in the WWE had a chance? And who would challenge the Warrior next for the Intercontinental Championship?

A great Pay-Per-View from the late 80's!!!!
jcraft-111 June 2001
This was a great wresteling event from 1989. It was held at the Medowlands Arena in New Jersey. I like the main event which was Hulk Hogan and Brutis "The Barber" Beefcake vs. The "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Zeus. That was a classic WWF Event. One other of the matches I thought was also great was Dusty Rhodes vs "The Honky Tonk Man." I will remember "The Blue Blazer" aka the late Owen Hart for his great wresteling matches including this one with "Mr. Perfect" Curt Henning. Also, This was Andre The Giant's Last summerslam as he teamed up with The Big Boss Man and Akeem to take on "Hacksaw" Jim Duggin and The Rockers Shawn Micheals and Marty Jenatty. In anther great Match, This is a rematch from wrestlemaina 5, The Ultimate Warrior Tooked on "Ravishing" Rick Rude for the I.C. Belt and I loved it when the Warrior won his second I.C. belt. Rowdy Rowdy Piper was there, too. This was a great Pay-Per-Veiw.

Better than previous year

Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS*

This one had only one good singles match, The Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude. Warrior was not a wrestler by any stretch of the imagination, but he always had excellent matches against Rude.

The opening tag team match was about as good as they get. The Hart Foundation got cheated out of yet another SummerSlam win against the Brain Busters, but they probably could have gotten away with letting Tully and Arn win cleanly. But why weren't the titles on the line? I can't figure out any reason for this.

I liked both of the six-man matches. Duggan, Demolition, Akeem, Andre, and Bossman in the same match is just fun to think about. And Duggan had the time of his life teaming with Ax and Smash. The other six-man match was incredibly good, but it would have worked better had the Rockers fought the Rougeaus and Martel faced Tito one on one. Although the Rockers would eventually dominate their feud with the Rougeaus, Jacques and Ray got the high-profile win at SummerSlam.

Tiny Lister sure was a good sport with his Zeus gimmick. He's a serious actor, and this would be embarrassing to most actors. And I'm glad Brutus Beefcake got to be in the main event. This almost made up for the fact that he was cheated out of a title shot at the previous and next SummerSlam.

Good show, worth a look. Honestly, you might want to fast-forward through the singles matches.

WWE Summerslam 1989
wrestlingsitewebmaster2 October 2005
This Summerslam from the Meadowlands arena, failed to product a worthy PPV. Summerslam in 1988 was way better than this and some of the matches were a colossal bore. Tom 'Zeus' Lister was an actor not a wrestler and it showed. All he could do was shout and smile, he had no wrestling qualities, but then again McMahon liked the guy because of his size. The result? A p*ss poor main event.

Results from the show:

  • The Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) defeated The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Heidhart) in a fair but long match.

  • Dusty Rhodes defeated The Honky Tonk Man in a boring match. The only interesting thing in this match was at the end. Jimmy Hart accidentally hit Honky with his own guitar and Dusty got the win.

  • Mr Perfect downed The Red Rooster in a short match.

  • The Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty) and Tito Santana lost to The Fabulous Rougeou Brothers and Rick Martel.

  • The Ultimate Warrior beat Rick Rude to win the Intercontinental Championship in a passable match.

  • King Duggan and Demolition defeated Akeem, Big Bossman and Andre the Giant in a fair match.

  • Greg 'the hammer' Valentine defeated Hercules. However special ring announcer Ronnie Garven declared that Hercules won by DQ after Valentine cheated by putting his feet on the ropes. No one actually knows who the winner was, even to this day!!!

  • 'The Million Dollar Man' Ted DiBiase defeated 'Superfly' Jimmy Snuka in a good match.

  • Hulk Hogan and Brutus 'the barber' Beefcake defeated 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and Zeus in a crap match.

Not good! Overall Grade - C

Odd Main Event + Few Great Matches = Disappointment
zkonedog27 February 2017
While the first SummerSlam event (1988) was a great premiere, this second edition takes a couple of steps backward due to only a couple really great matches and a "main event" that is anything but.

The only two matches I really enjoyed from SummerSlam '89 were:

-Hart Foundation vs. Brain Busters. Featured some great technical wrestling (as Bret Hart is always good for). -Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude. Just a classic feud that they let play out at THIS event instead of letting it percolate to the next Wrestlemania.

Then, we have the "Zeus" angle (from the WWF film production "No Holds Barred") for the main event, as he teams up with Randy Savage to take on Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake. It is so obvious that Zeus is a film-promoting gimmick that it is kind of sickening. Plus, the Hogan/Savage feud had already been resolved at the previous Wrestlemania, so the bloom was off that rose.

Overall, then, I felt that SummerSlam '89 was kind of a disappointment with its gimmicky main event and low quality of matches. Also, and perhaps this is a result of it being only the second event in the show's history, but this one seemed like little more than a place-holder for upcoming angles/arcs.

Better on a second view

Warning: Spoilers
SummerSlam 1989 Thoughts.

SummerSlam 1989 was the 2nd annual SummerSlam event produced by the WWF. It took place August 28, 1989 at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Attendence was said to be 20,000. The PPV was also a financial success of 620,000. This was also an early start for people to get cable that included PPV buy options.

Main storyline involved Hulk Hogan in a big rivalry with Zeus who was portrayed by the late-Tommy Debo Lister. The storyline was Zeus wanting to get payback after being defeated by Hogan in the movie. So the rivalry transition to real-life with a tag match set of Savage, who was still in an aftermath rivalry with Hogan, as Zeus's partner and Breefcake as Hogan's partner. We also had the Intercontinental Championship match of Rick Rude vs. Ultimate Warrior which would lead to Vince pushing Warrior as a top guy for the next few months to WrestleMania.

The Good - Despite how silly the storyline was, the main event was pretty enjoyable. It closed the show perfectly and the aftermath was memorable of Miss Elizabeth getting a hit out of the annoying Sensational Sherri (I love her) making the crowd go nuts. The best match was The Intercontinental Championship match. Rude vs. Warrior was a really really great match match. I loved the close calls that gave the crowd goosebumps. It was stated in an interview that this match got Warrior to be an option for a rising top face for you know what in the following year of 1990. The opening was also good and I enjoyed the first 6 man tag match which was fast paced and fun.

The Meh - The second 6-man Tag was okay. Watchable and managed to keep the crowd awake after a match of the night candidate. It wasn't anything special though. Also the show had a bit too many tag matches. At the end another WWF title match would have been a more interesting thing to watch.

The Bad - Aside from the IC title match, all the single matches are Lackluster or bad. Perfect vs. Rooster was just something to make Perfect look good. Terry was underutilized. Dusty Rhodes victory over Honky Tonk Man was also really a put-over as Dusty returned earlier to the promotion. The worst match was Hercules vs. Greg Valentine. Awful with just a cheap finish.

Overall - It was a okay show. Not sooo amazing. It was mostly a typical major PPV card on the schedule as SummerSlam didn't quite have the vibe till year 92 that we would see later. It was better than 1988 after looking at it a second time. Really 2 matches did a minor boost for the show.

Score - 5 out of 10: Mediocre

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time :

1. The Hart Foundation vs. The Brian Busters - 3/5

2. Honky Tonk Man vs. Dusty Rhodes - 1.5/5

3. Mr. Perfect vs. Red Rooster - 1/5

4. Tito Santana & The Rockers vs. Rick Martel & The Fabulous Rougeaus - 3.5/5

5. Rick Rude vs. Ultimate Warrior: WWF Intercontinental Championship - 3.5/5

6. Demolition & King Duggan vs Big Bossman, Akeem & Andre the Giant - 2/5

7. Hercules vs. Greg Valentine - 0/5

8. Ted DiBiase vs. Jimmy Snuka - 1/5

9. Hulk Hogan & Brutus Breefcake vs. Zeus & Randy Savage - 3/5

Best Match - Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude

Worst Match - Hercules vs. Greg Valentine

Most Memorable Moment - Aftermath of main event.

Top 5 Performers

1. Ultimate Warrior - Good Performance

2. Rick Rude - Good Performance. Did his part.

3. Shawn Michaels - Sold well in spots

4. Randy Savage - Good Performance

5. Rick Martel - Good Performance.

Recap
Spawn Devil1 July 2002
He was the most powerful force in the universe, and the key to Randy `Macho Man' Savage's plan to destroy his bitter enemy, Hulk Hogan. His name was Zeus, a mountain of a man standing at nearly 7 feet and weighing around 300 pounds of solid muscle. Savage recruited Zeus in an effort to take down Hogan, who with his ally, Brutus `The Barber' Beefcake, battled Savage and Zeus in a tag team match to headline SummerSlam 1989. In the end, Hulkamania triumphed again when Hogan bodyslammed Zeus and hit the legdrop for the win! For the second year in a row, the Ultimate Warrior made history at SummerSlam by capturing his second Intercontinental Championship. Warrior defeated `Ravishing' Rick Rude, who five months earlier defeated Warrior for the title at WrestleMania V. The win would eventually lead to Warrior's epic title-for-title confrontation with Hogan at WrestleMania VI.

FANTASTIC PAY-PER-VIEW
Big Movie Fan7 May 2002
Warning: Spoilers
The original SummerSlam was superb. The second annual SummerSlam was also superb.

Back in 1989 all the WWF stars put on good matches even though some of them had limited abilities. The WWF of 1989 had many varieties of wrestler-high flying wrestlers, technical wrestlers, brawlers etc.

There are great matches throughout this card. There are two that really stand out. The Ultimate Warrior has an awesome match with the late Ravishing Rick Rude. This bout even topped their fantastic match from WrestleMania V.

(SPOILER AHEAD)The main event pitted Hulk Hogan and his best buddy Brutus Beefcake against dastardly heels Randy Savage and the seemingly unstoppable Zeus. It was great to see Hogan and the power of Hulkamania overcome the 'invincible' Zeus.
