Try as we might, we withered gothic souls can only hold the line and extend October's scary vibes into November for so long. But with so few viewing options specific to the month (although horror fans now have a bountiful feast to indulge in around Turkey Day thanks to Eli Roth's satisfyingly sleazy slasher "Thanksgiving"), many people tend to spend this time of year diving head-first into Christmas entertainment. However, it's another quirky Yuletide comedy that's making waves on streaming at the moment. Titled "Best. Christmas. Ever!", the Netflix exclusive rolled out globally on November 16, 2023. According to Netflix viewership aggregator FlixPatrol, the film quickly shot to #1 on the streamer on its first...

This year, Freeform’s annual “31 Nights of Halloween” lineup will include films from Tim Burton and Jordan Peele, as well as The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror episodes. In addition to classic Halloween favorites like Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride, The Witches, and the original Ghostbusters, Freeform’s added (relatively) newer horror films including Get Out, A Quiet Place, and 2018’s version of Halloween to their 2022 October schedule.
Animated offerings include Madagascar, multiple Shreks, Frankenweenie, and Hotel Transylvania and its sequel. “31 Nights of Halloween” will also host the Freeform premieres of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie), Happy Death Day, and Happy Death Day 2U.

"Nobody around here really appreciates my taste in weird stuff." These words spoken by Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) in the original Halloweentown film became my personal mantra as a Halloween-obsessed kid. Why? Well, Brown's portrayal of Marnie had me feeling seen, as the character was a fan of the supernatural, bold and outspoken and perfectly imperfect. In fact, the quarterback at my high school once said I was Brown's real-life doppelgänger, which pleased me to no end. So when Disney Channel replaced Brown in the fourth film of the franchise, Return to Halloweentown, I personally felt slighted. Instead of the relatable actress I had come to admire, Return to...

"Being normal is vastly overrated." Hollywood legend Debbie Reynolds uttered these very words while playing grandmother witch Agatha "Aggie" Cromwell in the 1998 Disney Channel Original Movie, Halloweentown. In the made-for-tv movie, 13-year-old Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) learns she's a witch and travels to another world to help grandma Aggie (Reynolds) fight an unknown evil-doer. After debuting on Disney Channel on Oct. 17, 1998, Halloweentown inspired three sequel films, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, Halloweentown High and Return to Halloweentown. (Although, die-hard fans don't acknowledge the fourth film due to the Marnie recast. We promise, it isn't personal Sara...

Halloweentown's Kimberly J. Brown is sharing the little known story about how she fell in love with her co-star Daniel Kountz. Fans of the 2001 Disney Channel Original movie will remember the two actors starred in the spooky film about Marnie and her siblings' journeys to Halloweentown. Kimberly portrayed Marnie, who was introduced in the first movie, while Daniel played Kal in the sequel Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge. Of course, Kal ended up being the son of Kalabar, who Marnie and her witchy family banished in the first movie. Essentially, they could never be together because Kal was intent on avenging his father's death. As Kimberly put it in a new TikTok...

Being normal is vastly overrated. Then again, for Halloweentown star Phillip Van Dyke, who played the goblin Luke in the first two films, normal is exactly what he wanted to be. In an exclusive interview with E! News, the San Francisco native shared that although he left the Hollywood limelight behind shortly after 2001's Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, he's now made his way back to the franchise, by way of the Spirit of Halloweentown festival in St. Helens, Or. "In my early twenties, we didn't have social media like we do today," the 36-year-old explained. "So I don't know if I even realized the level—the following—that these films had." Now,...

Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown are staples in any October movie marathon, but now, one fan has uncovered something that may suggest the two classics share a cinematic world. On TikTok, user @lyssalyssalyssahh spotted something major in a scene from Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge. Towards the end of the film, young witch Sophie (played by Emily Roeske) quickly transforms someone into multiple different characters. As she's flipping through random magical creatures, the TikToker Lyssa noticed that one looked very familiar. "Is this, or is this not, Sarah Sanderson's exact outfit?!" the TikToker exclaimed, speaking of the witch played by Sarah Jessica...

Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween lineup might seem like a whole bunch of Hocus Pocus, but there’s actually quite a bit of variety this year.
In fact, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy is scheduled to air just 14 times in 2020. That might sound like a lot… until you discover that the basic cabler aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019.

It may still be over two months until Halloween, but that hasn’t stopped Disney+ from getting in the holiday spirit. A batch of 20 family-friendly horror films have dropped on the streaming service recently, providing you with an abundance of frights to get you gradually geared up for the best night of the year, with a few stand-out entries worth looking out for.
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is one of many anthology pics Disney released in the ‘40s, and is best remembered as a Boomer equivalent of Watership Down, The Dark Crystal or The NeverEnding Story in the “movies that traumatized children” category. Its first segment is based on classic kids book The Wind in the Willows, but the second, more relevant half adapts Washington Irving’s famous short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, with its rich but dark animation and foreboding tone and music terrifying many of its young viewers.

Despite being enemies in Halloweentown, Marnie and Kal have apparently fallen in love in the mortal world. After nearly a year of sharing sweet selfies, the Disney Channel original movie's Kimberly J. Brown and Daniel Kountz seemingly confirmed their relationship with a shot of them kissing on International Kissing Day in July. Fans of the '90s and '00s franchise with a cult-like following were stunned by the announcement, and Brown's post quickly amassed more than 10,000 "likes."
As it turns out, there may have been signs that the two had been dating for quite some time. Brown wished Kountz a happy birthday last year, and shortly thereafter the two celebrated Halloween together, fittingly enough, in Superman and Wonder Woman costumes. Kountz has consistently appeared on Brown's Instagram ever since. (It's worth noting that Kountz is not very active on Instagram.)

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Check here for more double feature recommendations and other Halloween 2017 coverage.]
There’s nothing quite like an outside threat to bring a family together, especially when that threat is of the undead variety. Siblings may not always get along, but when your sister’s soul is sought by a coven of witches, or when your mom is eyed as an eternal bride by a coffin-dwelling creep, it’s time to take those Sister Sledge lyrics to heart and become a family that can overcome anything—including wicked spells and sharp fangs. Set on respective fateful nights where the future of a homestead hangs in the balance and its up to siblings to save it, Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire and Hocus Pocus are family-friendly films that make for a great double feature during the Halloween season.

How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance.
