Great!

Warning: Spoilers
Everyone knows Santo. Most people may know Blue Demon. But this one has Superzan in it.

Superzan* was created by Rogelio Agrasánchez to be a movie luchador, but don't judge him. Aftet all, Huracán Ramírez, Neutrón and Sombra Vengador all got their start in the movies before they became real wrestlers.

Tinieblas was originally cast to play the character in Superzán El Invencible, yet delays led to wrestling becoming more important for him. He introduced the producers to Alfonso Mora, who took over he role for half of the first movie and then totally became Superzan. He was trained by Dick Medrano and El Gladiador, often teaming with Tinieblas and wrestling in Guatemala. After a short comeback to introduce El Hijo de Superzan, a wrestler who was not truly his son. Instead, it was Rafael Garcia Sanchez, whose father was the exotico Bello Greco and later Karis La Momia in AAA. He eventually got the gimmick that made him an international star as Super Calo (he also wrestled as El Greco Jr., El Diabólico Chucky, Love Warrior and Jordy Stone, as he is the brother of Chris and Alan Stone).

Anyway, Superzan and Blue Demon teamed up in this movie to battle Satan himself, who was quite ably assisted by a literal cadre of mummies. More than seven, let me tell you that much.

We start at the funeral of Sofia's father, during which she is dismayed to hear her father begin narrating the story of his life. If you think it's kinda crazy that obviously Laurie Strode can hear the music in Halloween 2, just imagine how absolutely extraña it is to hear a dead man give exposition and one of the characters be able to hear it!

The curse that cost his life has now been passed on to his daughter. And to make matters worse - or more interesting - she's also inherited his mansion, which sits on top of a treasure chest full of cursed gold. Yes, anyone who claims that gold must give his or her soul to Satan, who totally wants people to come and get it.

So, one of Satan's men makes a challenge to Sofia that she must conquer three challenges in order to obtain her father's inheritance. And oh yeah, go into the Mansion of the 7 Mummies. If only her wrestling boyfriend Rodrigo just hadn't been wacked about the head by a hunchback with a shovel! Luckily, his friends Superzan and Blue Demon show up to help.

The first challenge to Sofia is choosing one of seven doors. Only one has the jeweled scepter that will allow her into the mansion. The other six? Death. I mean, those are bad odds, yet our heroine and her friend Isabella go for it. Just when Sofia finds the right door, seven mummies appear out of nowhere and descend on her and her friend. And that's when our masked men show up and save the day, bringing the joy to our hearts that can only come from luchadors beating the sand out of mummies before Sofia finally grabs the scepter.

I neglected to reveal that there is also a bad guy who is an old woman in a wheelchair and that there is a horrible comic relief character named Manolín whose death you will beg for.

So where did these mummies come from? Well, it turns out the Sofia's ancestor - back in the days of the conquistadors - had made a pact with the devil to gain wealth at the cost of his people. He tried to stop the pact with an exorcism, but his seven most trusted servants all turned on him and they are the mummies we're up against today. Oh yeah - in case you wonder why Sofia wants the treasure so badly, which seems against character, she hopes that by giving it back to the descendents of who the money was originally taken from, she can break the curse. Hey, get that. Reparations actually make sense. Hmm - what a concept.

Without any further exposition, our heroine must cross a swamp to grab the head of her long dead ancestor, while also battling her now possessed boyfriend. Yes, a flying zombie mummy head that wants to kill her!

As for the last challenge, well, it's basically a battle royal against Satan and all the mummies. The odds are, as always, never on the side of good.

Director Rafael Lanuza also made Superzan y el niño del espacio and El triunfo de los campeones justicieros. He's working from a script by Rogelio Agrasánchez, who was behind plenty of lucha movies, but you should seek out his totally weird Macabre Legends of the Colony.

If you wonder, haven't I seen a movie where luchadors fight mummies, you may have been watching Los Momias de Guanaujuato, El Robo de los momias de Guanajuato, El Castillo de los momias de Guanajuato, Las momias de San Ángel or even The Wrestling Women vs. The Aztec Mummy. Or perhaps Mil Mascaras vs. The Aztec Mummy.

Decent effort.

I watched this one on a Sunday morning. I had a hang over and Blue Demon made by day better.

The movie is ambitious. I mean, it does offer some decent camera angles (like before entering the mansion), some moments that were intended to be creepy and some old fashion action.

The "spooky" music is catchy and cheesy but we can always forget the production values when Blue Demon enters the mansion.

The mummies are actually creepy and add some old fashion spook to the movie's tone. The acting is just well, not that terrible.

This is a prime example of a cheesy but decent Mexican Wrestlers movie that tries to be creepy.

Recommended for fans of these kind of movies.

Low budget horror for Blue Demon and Superzan
Leofwine_draca11 January 2023
MANSION OF THE SEVEN MUMMIES (1977, original title La mansion de las 7 momias) is another Mexican wrestling/horror combo. No Santo this time around, but Blue Demon's here and he teams up with the golden Superzan for some more diabolical action. The main plot is about an heiress inheriting a typical 'old dark house' and hunting for some treasure, but to her dismay it seems to be guarded by a squad of living mummies...

The budget might be lower than ever, but this is a film that still packs in plenty of action with our brawny twosome taking the fight to the Italian-style zombie mummies. The makeup is pretty great actually and it's quite striking to see the undead brawling away like some boozers outside a Friday-night pub. The gothic sets add atmosphere, the devil appears in support (!) and there's a great little sequence involving a levitating skull that spooked me out. Not the greatest of its kind, but fun enough for a watch.

Actually there are nine mummies.

Warning: Spoilers
Masked wrestlers BlueDemon and Superzan must aid a young lady in undergoing three ordeals to inherit a treasure. Although hampered by my near total ignorance of the language, this movie was not too tough to figure out. Satan Himself appears and eggs on the bad guy, and there are some fights between wrestlers and mummies. You can keep knocking those mummies down and they get right back up again. Sometimes when it is supposed to be night time it is rather sunny. Filmed on location in Antigua Guatemala, and the locations are pretty strange and interesting. Though quite cheaply made and not very lively, I still watched it all with some interest. Look out for the surprise ending - some people you think are good guys turn out not to be and someone you think is a bad guy was only a poor communicator. Available in a set of 6 1970s masked wrestler movies, "Los Luchadores Invencibles" which I got from the public library.

Seeit for the eerie music and creepy monsters
dbborroughs15 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
With no extraneous wrestling matches this film just concentrates on the plot and is all the better for it. The plot has Superzan and the Blue Demon helping out a woman who is in danger from a bad guy who is in league with the devil and who has an army of zombies or mummies.

I've been slowly going through a stack of masked wrestler movies that I picked up and so far this is one of the best. While there is some silliness here and there the film actually shows signs of being more than just a knock off to make money.. The zombies are scary, the music eerie. The plot isn't as childish or stupid as some of the similar films produced in the 1970's were. It's the sort of thing that had the heroes not been clad in masks and capes, this would have become a grindhouse staple.

Definitely recommended.

Solid and highly enjoyable luchador effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder21 August 2017
Following the death of her father, a woman finds that his death may have been connected to a devilish pact which enacted a curse on a massive treasure and a group of zombified mummies and brings her friends Blue Demon and Superzan to help her put an end to it all.

This is one of the finest and most enjoyable of the luchador efforts. What really makes this one work is the fact that there's a decided feel towards the serious side rather than the cheesy. Dropping a big cliché featured here, the continuous wrestling matches that interrupt the action, this one plays far more like a traditional horror effort that just so happens to feature the masked wrestlers who can use their skills in the situation. Even moreso is the fact that there's a lot to like here with the somewhat complex storyline involving ancient curses and the tribulation she has to undergo in order to finally put an end to it all which is rather fun since it makes for a really intriguing offering mixing it together with the creepy location. That comes into play rather nicely here with the film offering up plenty of solid action scenes from the start, from the brawl in the crypt that features the two battling with the mummies while she gathers the sacred dagger, a spirited fight against a traitorous accomplice in the middle of the woods while the mummies gather around while the highlight sequence forces them to battle against the creatures in the middle of a swamp riddled with corpses while the target gathers up a floating, still- alive head to end the test. These set the stage for a fun final battle with the creatures in the family crypt, which is where we finally get the answer to the curse and its impact after all this time but also manages to feature some stellar visuals in the Gothic- filled lair while the action is given a wide berth. From the Satanic ceremony down in the altar to the final mummy battle that takes place outside and spills into the cathedral within where they finally are forced to free her, this one offers up a strong and wholly enjoyable mixture of Gothic set-pieces and luchador-styled brawling as the final confrontation with the Devil takes place. Given that this allows for plenty of chances to showcase the mummies in utterly glorious fashion with their freaky appearance looking far more like zombies than expected considering their rotten, blank features and tattered clothing which leaves a strong impression, this one has a lot to really like about it which holds it up over its minor flaws. The film's biggest problem is the fact that there's not a real reason for the Devil to sit around waiting for something to happen, as he comes off very lackadaisical in the whole affair plotting and scheming without really being involved in anything. As well, there's the decision to keep the comic relief alive here by actively avoiding him during the encounters instead of attacking him during all the fighting, but otherwise, this one has a lot to like.

Rated Unrated/PG-13: Violence.

Rafael Lanuza's rumbustious zombie rumble remains a total joy to watch!
Weirdling_Wolf28 July 2023
The exciting, Blue Demon-starring 'La Mansión de las 7 Momias' is a riotously entertaining Luchador feature, abounding lustily with ancient demonic curses, buried gold treasure, scheming Satanic minions and menacing, propah brillo crusty attack zombies! Beautiful heiress, Sofia (María Cardinal ) must bravely complete three increasingly ominous tasks in order to break the family curse, and inherit the sizable golden bounty! The voluptuous Sofia's dauntingly zombie-infested ordeal is robustly aided by heroic duo, Superzan & Blue Demon. With plentiful bouts of zesty Blue Demon/Superzan scrappage, beautiful Guatemalan locations, moody photography by, Armando Castillion, Rafael Lanuza's rumbustious zombie rumble remains a total joy to watch! Luiz Hernandez Breton's grievously groovy, spook-a-delic score, plus the memorably eerie Blind Dead vibes give 'La Mansión de las 7 Momias an additionally unique flavour!
