Fantastic early PS2 game.
Analog_Devotee3 August 2021
An absolute gem of a game. The gothic and demonic tone and style of this game reminds me of something that would be plucked out of a Clive Barker story. The combat is fluid as all get out and the story is pretty good, too; what keeps you here is the combat and environments, though.

Loved the character of Dante, just certain aspects of the game I did not like.
Aaron13752 July 2007
I liked how the story started out, and I liked the character of Dante right away. A dude with a big sword and dual guns, what isn't there to like? The fighting was rather fast and furious too, so what exactly are my complaints exactly? Well I did not care for the setting for one thing. The game starts out in a regular city, in a back alley and almost immediately shifts to an old castle. I don't know, Dante fit the city better, I would have enjoyed fighting in a more urban environment instead of the old Gothic one. Then there are the enemy characters...they are not all that different from one another. You have maybe four or five types you fight throughout the game and then the bosses. I need a bit more variety to be honest. Then there are the pointless underwater scenes I did not care for either. The game is also hard, so hard I had to play on easy which was to easy. Still, the game was fun as controlling Dante was fun and the fighting fun. I loved getting the grenade launcher late in the game. The story was okay, like I said I would have rather used this character in the city, granted there it would have been a bit like "Constantine", but hey that would be good in my book. So it is a good enough challenge and rather fun, I just hope the sequels are better.

Let's rock baby!

Warning: Spoilers
Devil may cry (2001) is an action adventure game filled with all sorts of cool enemies, weapons, and a really unique combat system that makes this game stand out to me. And, it still holds up till this day even though it seems hard at times I find it very satisfying getting through all the levels and moving on and, you can upgrade your weapons which can make you really powerful and makes dealing with enemies easier at times. Also, Dante is very cool in this game he has good lines except one (you know the one) that seems very cringe worthy to me and it makes you wonder, "who wrote this?" But, other than that Devil may cry is a very good game that more people should play.

Devil May Cry rocks, baby!
Studx502 June 2002
Devil May Cry is as much as a stylish thriller as it is an intense action game. There are many graphical nuances that enhance the experience as well, such as entering a mirror and having this alternate world appear blurry. Numerous attacks are portrayed with ultra fast and smooth animations, contributing if nothing else to how much fun the game is to play and how much fun these battles are to be involved in. Dante can also hover in the air after a jump and fire his handguns, gaining even more bonus points in the 'damn that's really cool' category.

Unfortunately the game ends a bit quickly. The game can easily be completed in under ten hours, longer only if the player wants to complete the game on all the difficulty settings and earn the highest ranking on each mission. Otherwise, you're looking at a game that will satisfy most with only a rental. However, it's the type of game everyone should have in their collection. It's one of the few elite games that have graced the PS2 so far.

Please hurry with the movie!

It seems Hollywood can't avoid the craze with adapting video games into feature length films with kick ass effects involved. . .

Okay so we've been given films like Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 and Resident Evil are strong justifications with comic books already firmly establishing close ties with dominating the big screen (i.e. Blade, X-Men, The Crow, Spiderman and Matrix).

The game is more than what any typical game playing die-hard fan could wish for: stunning graphics, killer moves and one beautiful gorgeous looking babe named Trish. But then again it's only a game or is it?

Bring on the movie, that's all I'm concerned with right now. Just hope someone like Mark Dacascos could be considered for the lead role as the character Dante.

For the meantime anyone a fan of Resident Evil will not be dissapointed at all as this is "must-own" video game of the millennium.

Jackpot!

Okay, I first played the series with Devil May Cry 2 in passing. I wasn't impressed. Then I learned that in the rest of the series the plot is more coherent and Dante is way cooler. I'm glad I believed them. In terms of characters and their interaction, it's second only to number 3. Dante, the hero, the mysterious woman who wrecks his office (now a pattern) and the Black Knight Nelo Angelo. Dante's past is unraveled as the game progresses, as are everyone Else's, which all tie in in many clever ways. Then there is the Dark Emperor Mundus, smote by Sparda, the legendary Demon who woke up to justice and saved the human world from Mundus' hordes. In terms of plot, it's great. A mercenary demon hunter is brought to an island where the Dark Emperor is gathering his power, and so on (play the game if you want the plot, it's more fun!) The cut scenes are excellent, as is the writing. Dante's demonic heritage gives him physical resistance that makes for some "interesting" scenes.

10/10, just in case you missed that above. If you haven't played this yet, do it.

I seriously believe this could be an AWESOME movie!

MANY video game movies have failed, as mentioned before. But it is only because they are picking the wrong games. This is a MUST for movie consideration. But another thing about video game movies is they just dont cast the right people, so I'm hoping if they DO make DMC a movie, cast the right actors!

Poetic Dante
Badr90s6 October 2021
With it's RE4 vibes this franchise was born to be the best hack & slash of all time, Dante and Vergil as one of the best duo/rivlary.

8/10 I recommend

Apart from the voice acting so bad it's perfect, the simple but effective combat, the bosses either being unfair or pretty good and the camera but overall dmc 1 is a classic that should be remembered fondly for years. Although a remake would be nice. Without getting into spoilers the story is pretty good it's simple and is barely the focus. The main focus is the gameplay which is the main gimmick. As a revolutionary hack and slash it features a mixture of melee and guns combat. For the time it was simple and great but there is one problem, the camera is sometimes painful. Also the music is perfect. Tldr 8/10 I recommend.

Dante Rocks! Baby!
I'm sure most of you have noticed that this game is somewhat linked to Dante Allighieri's Divine Comedy! I mean you have Dante, Virgil and Trish (Beatrice)! This is one of the few games I know that REALLY deserves a movie. An excellent cast would be Gary Daniels or maybe even Jean Claude Van Damme to play Dante. Dante in the game is strong, a great hand to hand fighter and also an excellent marksmen, wielding hand guns and many other items. One of the most stylish characters since Spawn!

Better than Resident Evil.
BlackJack_B7 August 2002
PS2 owners may be lamenting that the Nintendo GameCube is getting the exclusive rights to Resdient Evil (although Sony's huge lead, if it continues through Christmas and beyond, will force CapCom to probably release RE games on PS2), but I don't care, because PS2's exclusive series, Devil May Cry, is much better and CapCom should make this series its focus.

Players control Dante, a man with a mysterious past. His father was a demon who fought with the humans to rid the world of Mundus. He then lived with mankind and married a woman, who bore him two sons (Virgil and Dante). Two millenia later, Dante works as a P.I. dealing with supernatural phenomena. A woman named Trish asks him to go to her castle to rid it of ghosts and spirits, but she is only baiting him in going so Mundus can return and eliminate him so his path to world domination will be clear. Dante's job is to make sure that doesn't happen.

The game has several control set-ups. I chose the Easy mode that eliminates all the guesswork. Yeah, it might be wimpy, but my hands aren't as good as they were before. With this mode, you'll have tons of fun destroying all sorts of entities, from marionettes, reapers, and spiders to huge bosses. You can collect gems to buy health aids or gain new powers as you collect new swords. Also, you can gain more power by going into Devil Trigger mode, which will allow you to use the specials you've collected.

With superb graphics, haunting sound effects and music, and tough enemies, the game delivers. There are also special hidden missions to attempt, plenty of toys to play with, and cutscenes to keep the story moving. The only problem with the game is that it's short. You can try more difficult modes, though, if you beat the game on normal.

Another must buy - although if you have a lot of time to spare on this game, you might beat this one in a week rental, but if you have other games in your collection, you should own it. ****1/2 out of *****

A story/game about the legendary dark knight who closed the demon world and about a son who will end it all again.
seashore198918 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably still the best Devil May Cry game yet. The game play is terrific with cool styles and skills. You just gotta play it. Although the names are based on Dante Aligheiri's Divine Comedy it is still far from that classic epic story (or so I believe). You cant find a cooler or more cockier person then Dante. The game play is hard but not as hard as Devil May Cry 3. There isn't much story since Capcom used DMc out of Resident Evil 4 scraps. If you think about it, Dante is a punkish version of Leon from Resident Evil.

Just too kool for his own kind, the half human, half demon Dante kicks but with awesome lines such as, "Block off Feather face" when he talks back to the Griffon. Although the sad thing is about this game is Trish. She totally kills the game especially towards the ending when she becomes good and becomes Dante's Side kick. Her stupid Slogan, "Devils Never Cry" just doesn't sound kool enough. I'm so glad Capcom never had her again in the other Devil May Cry games. I just wish she'd stay dead when Mundus killed her.

All in all. Its a great game, with difficult to maneuver "Stylish" action moves. If your interested in Any of the Dmc games you have to get the first in your collection. Its the best game play out of all 3. Not much of a story but still interesting enough.
