One of the major revolutionaries of the 60’s pop art movement, a widely influential theorist, and a beguiling, colorful personality in his own right, David Hockney is a prime figure for a documentary, but Randall Wright’s portrait, Hockney, never makes a strong enough argument for its own existence. Curating archival home video footage, interviews from colleagues, and conversations with the own monolithic artist, Hockney is equipped with the necessary resources, but none of the unified focus that’s required to make the nearly two-hour documentary feel essential.

When Sam, an American writer living in Rome, witnesses an attempted murder in an art gallery and reports the crime to the police, he unwittingly sets the killer’s sights on himself and his beautiful model girlfriend. Things soon start to unravel as it becomes clear that, with the identity of the villain very much open to question, Sam himself is a prime suspect in the case. As the murders continue, Sam begins his own investigations into the serial killings, hoping to somehow clear his name.

Arrow Films, a UK-based company, has announced a Region Free release of Brian De Palma’s Obsession for June 27th. Usually, Arrow Films releases only UK region based discs, so this is pretty cool. The 1976 film starred Cliff Robertson (Spider-Man) and John Lithgow (Harry and the Hendersons).
