The sound does sound rather boxed at times, but other than that this 1989 Glyndebourne performance of one of Janacek's best and most moving operas is most excellent. The closed and claustrophobic space atmosphere of the sets add to the feeling of a closed society in an 19th century village, while the costumes and lighting are just as effective. The orchestra play beautifully with a hint of darkness when needed, while Andrew Davies' leadership on the conductor's podium is superb. The staging is always compelling. As for the performances, Roberta Alexander mayn't be your idea of Jenufa, I do think perhaps that she is too old, but she sings wonderfully and she is a moving actress. Phillip Langridge is a fine Laca, he sings strongly and with sympathy and as ever his acting is very committed. The Steva of Mark Baker is also great, as is Menai Davies. However the production's best asset is Anja Silja, possibly the best Kostelnicka you'll find anywhere, not only does she have a very powerful voice but with Kostelnicka's misgiving turning to guilty nature Silja dominates the stage. Overall, this Jenufa's excellent. 9/10 Bethany Cox
