"Hostile Environment" seems to have a lot of promising B-movie actors and ingredients, however here are a few suggestions for you instead of watching this movie:

  • If you're a Brigitte Nielsen fan, try "Red Sonja"

  • If you're a Matthias Hues fan, try "No Retreat, No Surrender 2"

  • If you're a Darren Shahlavi fan, try "Bloodmoon"

  • If you're a Rochelle Swanson fan, try "Sorceress" (though I did get a kick out of seeing her using a machine gun at one point here)

  • If you want an action movie set on a ship, try the superb Hong Kong - made "Red Wolf"

  • If you want a reluctant post-apocalyptic loner/hero, try "Mad Max"

However, if you're looking for a movie with a very ripped man spending most of the running time half-naked, you've come to the right place. Definitely a male muscle fetish film, I'll give it * out of 4 stars but my guess is most women will rate it higher.

The movie sucks, Hues rules
Lunita15 April 2001
Warning: Spoilers
Some time in the future: All water is contaminated, the only source for fresh drinking water is Minna (Brigitte Nielsen) who resides on a ship. Slaves are forced to produce the power for the machines. When the people on the mainland don't have any more goods to trade for water, Minna's henchmen kidnap the leader's daughter Jennifer (Rochelle Swanson) and the lonesome and bitter fighter Erikson (Matthias Hues) who tried to help her. She is kinda helpless, he's got a lot of fighting to do, starts a rebellion, sends Minna into the cold sea with a left hook and manages to escape with all the other main actors when the ship is blown up.

The story is not inventive at all, the characters are 100% stereotypes and Hues is just too friendly for a bitter and lonesome fighter. But he looks terrific and runs around the set with a bare chest all the time and has a lot of nice fights. So forget about the story, forget about the characters and just drool at Matthias Hues' defined six pack, his wonderful deltas, the big triceps, the perfect statue moving around for a pleasurable sight and, last not least, a friendly smile. Women will drool because Hues is so yummy, men will love the fights and with they looked the same. The movie definitely insults my intelligence but I've watched it twice during the last 24 hours. ;-)

Rare and dull... now that's a great mix
bellino-angelo20143 June 2022
In a not too distant future (tho isn't never made clear) toxic waste has reduced water on Earth. Only a few have the possibility of decontaminate the water from a giant warship, and Minna (Brigitte Nielsen) is the tyrannical ruler. The land dwellers have to battle Minna and they are helped by the daughter of the rebel leader, Mike Erikson and Jennifer's brother Rocky (Matthias Hues).

HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT has an appalling score of 2,3, only four reviews with the highest score that has a 4 and only 291 ratings. All signs that a movie is indeed terrible. Yet, why I watched it? Well, sometimes I love to feed my masochist side and watch some obscure stuff, but this time wasn't worth it. The acting was very lazy by everyone. Nielsen was ok as the villain but as for the others... I have seen better performances in Michael Ironside or Jean Claude Van Damme movies. There was a guy who was good only in kicking like Van Damme, Rocky that was there only for the sake of beating the snot and showing his huge muscles. And the editing was probably the sloppiest with some badly edited shoots like the one where Minna is thrown to her death as we don't even see Rocky kicking her and despite she is in the submarine we see her thrown backwards and then... she is nowhere to be seen. You just have to see it to believe it!

A terrible movie with lazy acting, bad editing (made probably by someone who was heavily drunk and wasn't fired yet) and dull pacing. I would recommend it only for people suffering from insomnia, as when it was over, I soon went to bed (no joking)!

A very rare movie, in almost every sense...

Warning: Spoilers
Being a die-hard Matthias Hues fan, i was really happy to track down a copy of this rare post-apocalyptic action movie. The story is nothing new, you've probably seen it thousand times before. Compared to most of David Prior's films, Hostile Environment seems to be made on an even lower budget, but with a surprisingly good list of b-movie actors (including Chris Kriesa, Voyo Goric and Grant James).

Matthias Hues proved (at least to me) that he can be a leading man, who has charisma, he looks good on screen, and can kick some serious ass. Darren Shahlavi is a good addition, as a brother of the great looking Jennifer (Rochelle Swanson), who gets kidnapped by Minna (Brigitte Nielsen). Also lookout for Ted Prior (director's brother), who has an uncredited cameo as "the running man" in the beginning of the movie.

Good points of this movie - Solid, well-known b-movie faces, some good fights, Matthias Hues as a likable, fighting-machine of a hero.

Bad points of this movie - Weak script, awful editing (which affects fighting scenes and shootout scenes a lot).

All in all, this is almost gold for B-movie lovers. If u're tired of seeing M. Hues getting beaten and killed in most of his movies, you'll be pleasantly surprised here. Darren Shahlavi shows his awesome fighting skills, and Brigitte Nielsen proves ones again that she is better suited for the villain roles.

Has a couple of OK fights
nitflegal10 January 2003
But not much more than that. The cast is capable and the fights are OK but that's about it. I wonder if Ms. Nielsen's headaches in the film were actually from being in such a wasted movie. She and the rest of the cast deserve better than this film.
