Jacob Elordi in Talks to Replace Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott’s ‘The Dog Stars’ (Exclusive)
Image
The future is looking brighter again.

Jacob Elordi is in early negotiations to star in Ridley Scott‘s post-apocalyptic thriller “The Dog Stars” for 20th Century, replacing Paul Mescal, who ran into scheduling issues. Mescal, who stars in Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel, had been poised to star in the film about a catastrophic flu virus that wipes out nearly all of humanity. But he was forced to drop out due to filming Sam Mendes‘ Beatles anthology.

Based on a 2012 novel by Peter Heller, the “Dog Stars” screenplay was written by Mark L. Smith (“Twisters”) and Christopher Wilkinson (“Ali”) and is expected to be Scott’s next film after a Bee Gees biopic for Paramount. If his deal closes, as is expected, Elordi would play a pilot named Hig who befriends a cranky gunman as they try to outlast a roaming band of scavengers called Reapers.

During a December conversation with...

Film Independent Spirit Awards President Talks Category Changes, Streaming Ceremony, and Oscar Impact
Image
When film and TV talents collide on the Santa Monica beach at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, anything can happen. Just ask “American Fiction” nominee Jeffrey Wright.

“The year I was nominated for ‘Basquiat,’ our producer Jon Kilik said, ‘Hey, do you want to meet Muhammad Ali?’” recalls Wright, up for the debut performance trophy at the 1997 ceremony, while the boxing champ was there with his doc “When We Were Kings.” “I pretty much skipped over a series of tables to say hello to him. Ali was an absolute personal hero and meeting him blew my mind. That was the beginning of a really gratifying relationship, because I ended up [playing photographer Howard Bingham] in the movie ‘Ali.’”

Wright, who had already won a Tony Award at that point, went on to more acclaim and glory in film and TV roles, this year receiving his first Oscar nomination for his performance in “American Fiction.

Ken Burns’ Urgent Warning: Why He’s Scared For America’s Future
Image
Ken Burns is scared about the future of America.

“I’m very anxious,” Burns admits. “I want my country to survive. I want to look back on all of this and go, ‘Wow, that was tough, but we made it through’ — just the way my parents and my grandparents talked to me about the Depression. I want to have this in our rearview mirror, but I don’t think that will happen for a while.”

His fear, palpable and hovering around the edges of many of the comments he makes during a long, discursive interview with Variety on a chilly January afternoon, is terrifying. After all, Burns knows of what he speaks. Over four decades and 40 documentaries, he has made the American experience his great artistic endeavor. He’s chronicled the construction of civic wonders like the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as the creation and popularization of distinctly American art...

Every IndieWire TV Review from 2021 So Far, Ranked by Best to Worst Grade
Image
Once again, we find ourselves already surprisingly further into a calendar year than feels appropriate. Even for those who don’t make it their sole mission to stay up-to-date with every new development in the TV world, the majority of the past year has brought with it a daunting number of series.

Some of those have been brand new shows, either the result of conscious release date delays or interrupted production schedules. Others have been series imports that enjoyed full runs in different parts of the world before getting a U.S. debut in 2021. And as the year continues to develop and the awards calendar switches over into its multi-holiday phase, we’ve also seen the return of established favorites.

We try our best to help sift through the steady stream of newcomers every month, but there still always seems to be more than any casual viewer can keep track.

Rome Film Festival Chief Antonio Monda on Luring Quentin Tarantino and Frank Miller
Image
For the Rome Film Festival’s 16th edition — which opens Thursday — Artistic Director Antonio Monda has secured high caliber guests such as Quentin Tarantino and Tim Burton, who are being fêted. Also attending are “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuaron and influential comics writer, artist and director Frank Miller, creator of the “Dark Knight” Batman comics series as well as “Sin City” and “300,” who is coming for the world premiere of celebratory doc “Frank Miller — American Genius” by Silenn Thomas.

The Eternal City’s Festa del Cinema, as the event is known locally, will close with Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals,” which marks “the first time a Marvel movie goes to a festival,” Monda boasts. Angelina Jolie is expected by the Italian press to hit the red carpet, although Monda won’t confirm.

Jessica Chastain and Vincent D’Onofrio are instead confirmed for Rome’s opening film, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” by Michael Showalter.

Emmy Ratings Improve From 2020’s All-Time Low — and Top 2019 Viewership, Too
Image
The 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Show did not make history last night — and for once, that’s a good thing.

Nielsen’s preliminary viewership statistics for the show stated that the Emmys were watched by an audience of 7.4 million, an increase from the 2020 show’s all-time low of 6.3 million viewers as well as 2019’s 6.9 million viewers. Viewership for the entertainment industry’s various award shows has been on the decline for years and the Primetime Emmys’ 2019 and 2020 installments were the lowest-rated Emmy ceremonies since the event began tracking viewership data in 1990. Though viewership for the 2021 event, which aired Sunday on CBS, was not particularly impressive compared to older ceremonies — it was still the third lowest-rated event since 1990 — the trend of ever-worsening viewership for the biggest night in television has been at least temporarily halted.

Also of note: Viewership for the telecast was likely higher than Nielsen’s early reports.

‘Muhammad Ali’ Review: Ken Burns Breaks Down the Legendary Boxer in Essential PBS Docuseries
Image
A Ken Burns documentary on legendary fighter Muhammad Ali sounds like the perfect union between filmmaker and subject — it also sounds like a topic Burns would have tackled long ago. Ali’s is a name that hasn’t diminished, let alone in the five years since his death from Parkinson’s, and the iconic sports star is still considered one of the greatest fighters of all time. Burns’ documentary shows exactly why that is, but the nearly eight-hour series also manages to break down Ali as a man, his connections with religion, and the lives of the numerous contenders he sought to conquer.

Like most of Burns’ documentaries, “Muhammad Ali” is a fairly comprehensive life-to-death examination of its title character, and all the basic tenets you’d expect are there. What’s fascinating, and makes the documentary so watchable, is the various throughlines Burns posits, starting with Ali’s fighting skills.

‘Muhammad Ali,’ a Thorough New Docuseries From Ken Burns and Company, Gives a Complex Icon His Due: TV Review
Image
Though “Muhammad Ali” is debuting well after “The Last Dance,” it’s hard not to think of it as a sort of spiritual prequel to ESPN’s propulsive docuseries. “The Last Dance,” which detailed the rise of Michael Jordan as both a superstar athlete and unstoppable global brand, immediately became a sensation upon its April 2020 premiere. With Jordan on board as a subject, source and producer, “The Last Dance” told the story of a man, but also the story of the time and place in which he thrived. As an ever-charismatic Jordan gave his interviews from inside a seemingly palatial home, cigar and Scotch constantly at the ready, he made it easy to understand how he’d become such a colossal figure in sports and culture alike.

Co-directed by Ken Burns, David McMahon and Sarah Burns, “Muhammad Ali” never mentions Jordan in its reconstruction of Ali’s career and impact on the world writ large,...

Image

For three films – “The Central Park Five,” “Jackie Robinson” and the latest PBS documentary series, “Muhammad Ali” – Ken’s daughter Sarah Burns co-directed with him. Sarah talked to Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com on the latest film about “The Greatest.”

Muhammad Ali’s life can also be characterized as The Greatest. Born in Louisville, Kentucky as Cassius Clay – he would later change his name when he joined the Nation of Islam – he burst upon the boxing scene in the 1960 Olympics, where he won a gold medal. Turning pro, he immediately made an impact with his brash braggadocio and backed it up with his superior pugilistic skills, becoming heavyweight champion of the world several times during his illustrious career. Through controversy and triumph, the documentary eyes of Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon...

Meet Your New Oscar Contenders: Will Smith, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and So Many More
Image
“King Richard” is ruling Telluride. Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Warner Bros. biopic about Richard Williams, the hard-driving father of straight-outta-Compton tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, played to a packed house Friday afternoon, building Best Actor buzz for its star and producer, Will Smith. He held the rights to the tennis duo’s story, but it was Jada Pinkett-Smith who suggested her husband meet with Green after she served on the Sundance jury in 2018, the year that the young director broke out with “Monsters and Men.”

This full-bodied performance marks Smith’s best shot at an Oscar in years. He’s been nominated twice, both for roles in which he had to fully inhabit living, breathing people: Boxer Muhammad Ali in Michael Mann’s “Ali” in 2002, and Chris Gardner, a man who rose from homelessness to become a stockbroker and motivational speaker, in Gabrielle Muccino’s 2007 “The Pursuit of Happyness.

“The Show,” as the Telluride Film Festival programmers refer to its annual feature program, is back this year with a wide array of documentary award season contenders.

The secretive Telluride team unveiled the 2021 program just 24 hours before the festival begins. “The festival directors are always dedicated to programming what they believe to be the best films of the year,” a fest spokesperson said. “And our documentary lineup reflects that.”

Liz Garbus and Sam Pollard were supposed to attend last year’s fest with “All In: The Fight for Democracy” and “MLK/FBI,” respectively. This year, both of the Oscar-nominated helmers will be in the small Colorado community for the premieres of their latest...

The Internet Thinks Topher Grace Was A Better Venom Than Tom Hardy
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 should be held up as an example of how not to make a comic book blockbuster. The movie already came burdened with massive expectations after the first two installments did big business at the box office and received widespread enthusiasm from both critics and fans, but the concluding chapter of the trilogy creaked under the weight of its own ambition.

The most expensive film ever made at the time with a budget of $258 million, Spider-Man 3 at least managed to become the highest-grossing entry yet after pulling in $895 million, and it remained the most lucrative Spidey outing until Far From Home crossed a billion dollars last summer, but it isn’t particularly well remembered.

It was Avi Arad who pushed for Venom to be included in the script despite Raimi’s objections, and the filmmaker hardly tries to mask his lack of interest in the...

New Muhammad Ali Movie Will Focus on His Vietnam War Draft Refusal
Image
The life and times of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali are rife with stories worthy of cinematic depiction, and now Searchlight is developing a movie centered on Ali's refusal to be drafted into the military during the Vietnam War. Up and coming director Shola Amoo has signed on to helm the project from a script by Phillip Howze, whose previous credits include the Netflix true crime series Mindhunter and the musical drama series The Eddy.

While director Shola Amoo does not have many credits to his name, he has already demonstrated an adept hand at emotion and insight with last year's critically acclaimed drama The Last Tree.

The movie is based on the book Sting Like a Bee: Muhammad Ali vs. The United States of America by Leigh Montville, which provides a perceptive look at the sports legend and centers on the cultural and political implications of his refusal of service...

Look for ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ to get some love from guilds for period details
Image
While “The Trial of Chicago 7” is earning critical acclaim for writer/director Aaron Sorkin and his all-star cast led by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, it is also being singled out for its attention to detail in capturing the look of the late 1960s. And that praise could well translate into recognition from three key branches of the academy: costume designers, hairstylists and makeup artists, and production designers.

The production designer for the film is Shane Valentino, the set decorator is Andrew Baseman, the costumer is Susan Lyall and the hair and makeup teams were headed by Nathan J. Busch II and Louise McCarthy. While none of them have been nominated at the Oscars or their respective guilds, Valentino did receive a BAFTA nomination for Best Production Design in 2016 for “Nocturnal Animals” (lost to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) and Busch was Emmy-nominated for Best Hairstyling for a Single-Camera...

Oscar spotlight: Jim Parsons’s visceral ‘Boys in the Band’ performance makes him the latest sitcom star to get serious
Image
Who would’ve thought that the artist formerly known as Sheldon Cooper would be so good at being mean. Jim Parsons earned an Emmy nomination this past summer for his role as a predatory talent agent in “Hollywood,” and in “The Boys in the Band,” adapted from Mart Crowley‘s stage play, he cruelly lashes out at his friends while hosting a party that goes awry. It’s a performance worthy of Oscar consideration, but he wouldn’t be the first sitcom star to gain recognition from the motion picture academy.

Though Parsons is best known for his four-time Emmy-winning role as Sheldon in “The Big Bang Theory,” this isn’t his first foray into drama, and it wouldn’t be his first recognition for it either. Before his dark turn earlier this year in “Hollywood,” he appeared on Broadway in “The Normal Heart” (2011) and reprised his role in the 2014 HBO adaptation,...

Regina King’s ‘One Night in Miami’ Enters the Oscars Race From Venice
Image
The strangest, most up-in-the-air Oscar season has begun with the 77th Venice Film Festival, which features more social distancing and less star power due to Covid-19. But that doesn’t mean that Venice has lost its luster for catapulting a movie into the awards race.

The first bonafide major contender for the 2021 Oscars season arrives with “One Night in Miami” from director Regina King, her feature debut behind the camera. With all the goodness that unfolds over its 110-minute runtime, the drama seems poised to go far in this year’s awards race.

The Amazon Studios’ release tells the story of one incredible night where Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), Sam Cooke and Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir) gathered after Ali defeated Sonny Liston in February 1964. The fictional account follows four historical icons as they discuss the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

‘One Night in Miami’ Review: Regina King’s Directorial Debut Is a Vibrant, Reflective Slice of History
Image
On a warm February 1964 night in Miami, self-professed “The Greatest” Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston to capture his first World Heavyweight Championship. A 7-to-1 underdog, Ali’s win was hardly expected, but it also somehow felt preordained, a necessary step towards his domination of the sport and then the world. Malcolm X, a close friend of Ali’s and his spiritual guide who would lead him to the Nation of Islam soon after the win, was there. So was soul singer Sam Cooke and NFL superstar Jim Brown. And when it was all over, when Ali became the greatest, the four close friends celebrated the win together at a local Miami hotel. What transpired on that evening — an evening that, yes, really did happen — belongs to both history and its central foursome, but is now vividly imagined in

Directed by Regina King (already an Oscar and Emmy winner for her...

First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.

Up next we got acclaimed classics,...

Netflix Is Adding 81 New Movies And TV Shows This Week
Image
How does Netflix determine which titles leave and which enter its dauntingly large library? Do they carefully analyze viewing statistics and find content that caters to our interests? Or do they simply throw an immense amount of content at the wall and watch what sticks?

The answer is probably a mix of both. Like most entertainment companies, Netflix knows full well the potential of mathematics, but it also respects the creative spirit. As such, some new additions may have been carefully chosen, and others not. In any case, here’s an overview of the 81 new movies and TV shows headed to the platform this coming week.

Let’s begin with the basics. One of the most inoffensive yet well-crafted Hollywood films arriving is Donnie Brasco. Produced in 1997, it stars now-legendary actor Johnny Depp in one of his first lead roles ever, and tells the story of an undercover cop who...

Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in Creed (2015)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: July 2020
Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in Creed (2015)
As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.

Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.

With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

Emmanuel Lubezki Sets Return as Cinematographer of David O. Russell’s Star-Studded New Film
Emmanuel Lubezki
Emmanuel Lubezki is finalizing his return to movies as the cinematographer of David O. Russell’s next directorial project, Deadline confirms. Russell’s film is untitled but is set up at New Regency and has already tapped Christian Bale, Michael B. Jordan, and Margot Robbie to star. Plot details are remaining under wraps. The movie will reunite Russell with Bale after “The Fighter” and “American Hustle,” the former of which won Bale the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The project will mark the first collaborations between Russell and Robbie, Jordan, and Lubezki.

Lubezki has remained largely out of the spotlight since an unprecedented run between 2013 and 2015 in which he won three Oscars for Best Cinematography thanks to his work on “Gravity,” “Birdman,” and “The Revenant.” The Dp’s last feature film was Terrence Malick’s “Song to Song” in 2017, one of several collaborations with the auteur that also include “The New World,...

LeBron James’ SpringHill Entertainment Seeking Big New Overall Content Deal (Exclusive)
LeBron James
LeBron James is looking for a slam dunk of a new overall deal for his content company SpringHill Entertainment, insiders familiar with the talks told Variety. Thanks to a wide field of potential suitors, the production entity is currently considering separate deals in film and television at different studios, sources said.

Disney Television Studios, Universal Pictures, Amazon Studios, Netflix and other companies had meetings with James and his team in recent months to discuss coming in-house to produce features, series and more in a first-look or exclusive engagement, said the insiders.

The NBA champion and his creative team, led by CEO Maverick Carter, have called Warner Bros. Entertainment home since 2015. That deal expired last July, according to three people familiar with the terms, though the AT&T-owned shop is still in the running to keep James on the lot. They are now competing against the aforementioned majors, infused with cash to win digital subscribers,...

Fox Aims To Wean Itself Off Pilot Cycle As It Steps Up Comedy Push
Fox is set to order a handful of comedy and drama pilots in January with a view to move completely off-cycle.

This comes as the network steps up its push into comedy after not having any new live-action comedies on the fall schedule, with particularly high hopes for Carla, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik and based on British comedy Miranda.

“We’re going to order a couple to several drama and comedy pilots in January but we’re also doing off-cycle. We’re not going to do all of our ordering in January; our hope is to be completely off-cycle,” Fox president of entertainment Michael Thorn told Deadline. “We’re looking at ordering things when they’re ready and backing off the traditional cycle and looking to set series up for success.”
