In the end credits of "Ali" (2001) it says, that footage of Michael Mann's early documentary "17 Days Down the Line" (1972) is used. It's the footage Ali sees on TV after his public speech.
Several scenes in Africa are based on Leon Gast's popular documentary. Director Mann said himself that Leon Gast provided outtakes of his film as additional inspiration.
