The Shaitan & David director Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘Dange’ is a dark students’ saga set in Goa. The narrative is a cross between college students conflicts within and outside. Dange begins with a promising scene when a sloshed Zeel (Harshvardhan Rane) rushes to present his paper the 4th time, with great help from his friends but fails to make it even after standing in front of the professors due to his imbalanced mental condition.
Dange is primarily about Zeel and Yuva (Ehan Bhat) who were best (childhood) friends but one incidence sours their friendship; Yuva faces molestation and humiliation for which he blames Zeel, now his senior in the college. Yuva is deeply affected by the incident. There is also Gayatri (T J Bhanu) seeking justice for a young Dalit student who was raped and impregnated. Yuva and Zeel, driven by their own conflicts, eventually realize a greater threat when they overhear plans to harm Gayatri.

"Experience a father son bond carved in blood." AA Films in India has revealed a trailer for another epic Indian movie called Animal, from filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Opening worldwide soon, including in the US - where it's showing in 800+ theaters, the highest number for a Hindi movie, surpassing the screen counts of Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) and Jawan (2023). What is it about? The synopsis are all rather vague. They say it's about "a son's love for his father." Often away due to work the father is unable to comprehend the intensity of his son's love. The son, Arjun, undergoes a remarkable transformation as the bond with his father begins to fracture, and he becomes consumed by a quest for vengeance. Looks like it's about a group of gangsters battling other gangsters? With a runtime of 201 minutes, Animal is one of the longest Indian films ever made (even longer...

Ringing Korea’S Grand Bell
“Concrete Utopia,” South Korea’s Oscar contender, was Wednesday named best film at the country’s annual Grand Bell Awards. It also won prizes for best actor, best supporting actress, art direction, sound mixing and visual effects. A disaster movie set in a devastated Seoul, it makes an unusual Academy Awards selection, but has gained high praise from reviewers. Variety this week said the film felt like “’Earthquake’ crossed with ‘Lord of the Flies’.”
The Grand Bell’s best director award nevertheless went to Ryoo Seung-wan for “Smugglers,” while Ahn Tae-jin took the best new director award for “The Night Owl.”
In the other half of the event, Disney+’s “Moving” was named best series, earning Han Hyo-joo the best series actress award to boot.

Before the release of "Pathaan" this year, the last project Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan (lovingly dubbed as Srk) starred in was 2018's "Zero," which performed poorly at the box office. Despite boasting phenomenal performances, "Zero" failed to captivate audiences due to its meandering plot that lost steam halfway through. Srk took a four-year hiatus after this (barring a surprise cameo in "Brahmāstra: Part One -- Shiva"), fueling added anticipation for his comeback film, "Pathaan," which grossed $6.8 million on its opening weekend alone when released in North American theaters. While the film's global box office earnings since its release speak for themselves, what makes audiences revisit "Pathaan" time and again is Srk's return to the big screen, and how electrifying it feels to see him perform in an action-intensive role.
In "Pathaan," Srk plays the titular spy, who is effortlessly suave in the way he goes about his job, taking...

Bethenny Frankel and Jill Zarin shared a moment of shock when Jill revealed that The Real Housewives of New York City producers did not ask to film Bethenny Frankel at her husband Bobby Zarin’s funeral.

South Indian mega-hits like K.G.F: Chapter 2 and Rrr and Disney’s Avatar: The War Of Water helped drive India’s box office to its second biggest year ever in revenue terms in 2022, but the gains are also partly attributed to rising ticket prices as overall admissions are still down on 2019.
Although cinemas were closed in January, India’s total box office revenue reached $1.28Bn (Rs106BN) in 2022, according to a report from Ormax Media and GroupM, the second biggest year on record and just a shade off the $1.31Bn (Rs109.5Bn) achieved in the record-breaking year of 2019.
By contrast, in the first year of the pandemic in 2020, total box office was just $238M (Rs20.6Bn) and grew to only $455M (Rs37.7Bn) the following year when the Delta variant of Covid-19 hit India.
However, admissions only reached 892M in 2022, compared to 1.03Bn in 2019, the highest year on record. Referred...

A new film stands atop the box-office weekend as The Woman King debuted at number one, displacing last weekend’s top film, Barbarian and sending it to second-place by a margin of 12.7 million.
The Viola Davis starring The Woman King brought in 19.0 million in its first weekend of release, easily claiming the top spot as last weekend’s top film, Barbarian was able to muster a mere 6.3 million in its second weekend of release. Despite the fall to second-place, Barbarian still sports a two-week total of 20.9 million. Claiming third place was the second debut of the weekend, the horror prequel Pearl which took in 3.12 million over the weekend to narrowly best fourth-place finisher See How They Run which brought in 3.1 million in its first weekend of release. These debuts all forced Bullet Train to a fifth-place finish as it brought in 2.5 million in its seventh weekend of release to lift its grand total to 96.4 million.

Julia Roberts and George Clooney landed at the top of the international box office chart this weekend as Universal/Working Title’s Ticket to Paradise expanded its offshore rollout. Adding 39 markets for a 12.1M session in 46 lifted the overseas cume to 14.8M with several majors still to come; domestic begins on October 21. Collectively, the new markets this session performed above Last Christmas and Yesterday, and in line with The Lost City and Bridget Jones’s Baby.
The reteam of Roberts and Clooney is the second starry romantic comedy to hit cinemas this year, after Paramount’s Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum adventure The Lost City which ultimately grossed about 191M globally. That film followed a more staggered release pattern overseas, largely debuting after domestic.
While we’re still seeing a dearth of new titles overseas, the current corridor is fertile ground for comedy in some markets, thus the pre-domestic release on the Ol Parker-directed Ticket.

It was claimed that the opening response of ‘Brahmastra: Part 1 – Shiva’ suffered because of the boycott call. The figures given out, however, are the kind that contradict the boycott claims. Does giving out inflated figures for any film save the film or the maker’s prestige? Most of all, can such figures convince movie lovers that they thronged the cinemas when they had not!
The trend of manipulating collection figures is age-old, but at that time it did not concern or involve people. It was done to sell the unreleased circuits of a film. This was when a film remained unsold in some circuits.
The producer would go ahead and release it in one major circuit, say Delhi-up and, when the week’s run was over, the inflated figures were issued to the trade papers so that other distributors from the unsold territories would get attracted. It was a manipulation...

Maria Bakalova will go down in history as the only actor to receive an Oscar nomination for playing a feral, monkey-eating Kazakh who discovers feminism via a rendezvous with Rudy Giuliani. Unless, of course, Meryl Streep decides to get really ballsy in her twilight years. Until then, though, Bakalova stands alone. It was that encounter with Giuliani – a skin-crawling display in which he touches her waist and her arms and rummages around his lap – in Sacha Baron Cohen’s 2020 sequel Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm that anointed Bakalova as one of the bravest actors in Hollywood.
Playing Borat’s industrious 15-year-old daughter Tutar, the Bulgarian actor is alone with Giuliani – the former mayor of New York and one of Donald Trump’s top aides – in his hotel room, made up in Republican anchorwoman cosplay and interviewing him for a right-wing TV network. Disney has both the #1 and #2 film this weekend, exactly one year after last achieving that. Sony did it two weeks ago with “The Invitation” and “Bullet Train,” but it is something the House of Mouse did regularly in years when they were the dominant studio for theatrical releases.
Their lead this weekend is more of a default situation than last September when holdover weekends of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Free Guy” held the top two spots. The latter was a Fox-produced title distributed by Disney. This year, both “Barbarian” (also out of Fox) and “Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva” (from Fox Star India) placed as two titles that might not normally be associated with the Burbank studio.
This is likely to be the rock bottom weekend, possibly for years to come. Total grosses amounted to 43 million, second worst for 2022 (1/28-30 lower). That’s only 31 percent of 2019’s post-Labor Day weekend gross.

September just keeps getting worse! With the top ten accumulating just 33.2 million this weekend, it marks the second lowest Weekend take of 2022 behind the weekend of January 28 when Spider-Man: No Way Home took first place in its 7th week of release.
The weekend had potential for a breakout hit with the Stephen King adaptation of Salem’s Lot originally scheduled for release, however Covid related issues saw that film delayed several months. Disney (who acquired Barbarian’s original studio: 20th Century Fox in 2019) saw a horror shaped void in the schedule and pounced on it.
That schedule change may have actually paid off as Barbarian opened better than expected (although our predictions were right on the money) to 10 million. That may not seem like a big victory, however the film was tracking to open in the same underwhelming range as The Invitation with around 7 million, so anything above that is a win.

Sunday Am Update: Some good word of mouth has prompted Disney/20th Century Studios/New Regency’s Barbarian to come in higher than anticipated at 10M; ditto for the their Star Studios’ Brahmastra Part One: Shiva which is at the high end of its estimates at 4.4M in the No. 2 spot. Disney will report their official numbers soon. The original range for Brahmastra was 2M-4M. That pic’s opening is the fourth highest stateside for a Bollywood title.

Saturday numbers are beginning to roll in, and they are looking in line with our predictions from Thursday.
Leading the pack is the new R-rated Horror film Barbarian with a Friday haul of 3.8 Million on its way to around 9 million for the weekend. It is possible this one can hit double digits if crowds turn out tonight, however with a C+ Cinemacscore and a 92 on Rotten Tomatoes, it appears this one is having quite the divide between audiences and critics.
The other new releases for the weekend are the Hindi language Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, which saw a 1.9 Million Friday and is expected to finish the weekend just shy of 5 Million. This is another case of a studio picking the right time to launch a film aimed at a niche audience stateside. With over 8000 screens worldwide, this marks the widest release ever for an Indian film.

Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva
Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna
Written & Directed by Ayan Mukerji
We meet Shiva a happy-go-lucky avatar(the gait in Ranbir’s steps just can’t wait , the ringing of the temple bells sounds like anklets worn by prancing belles) of Anil Kapoor’s Mr India who has a chance encounter with Isha(Alia Bhatt) and….well, Shiva’s life changes.
The nonstop adventure that takes Shiva on a Bharat Darshan starts in Kolkata and ends in never-never land with a stopovers in Pm Modiji’s Varanasi and Kangnaji’s Himachal Pradesh. There is a breathless anxious excitement to the storytelling, almost like a beat-based dance song by R D Burman whose picture Shiva has on his wall.
The actors go with the flamboyant mood of the proceedings. Ranbir Kapoor , always a portrait of restraint, lets himself go. He’s never been more over-the-top.

Can Barbarian be the conquering hero of the post-Labor Day box office?
The 20th Century Studios and New Regency horror film is opening in 2,340 theaters at the domestic box office this weekend, and should place No. 1 with at least 5 million to 6 million after grossing 850,000 million in Thursday previews beginning at 7 p.m.
There’s plenty of upside for Barbarian, which is rated R. It boasts a 94 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, an impressive number for a horror movie.
Overseas, Barbarian debuts this weekend in smaller Latin American territories, before launching in Mexico, Argentina and Colombia the following weekend.
The well-reviewed film, full of twists and turns, follows a young woman (Georgina Campbell) arriving late at night to a rental home in a rundown Detroit neighborhood only to find it occupied by another renter, played by Bill Skarsgard. Barbarian marks Zach Cregger’s solo feature debut.

Government advice is that cinemas can stay open during official mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II.
The majority of UK-Ireland cinemas will remain open this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, with distributors moving ahead with new releases.
Government ‘formal guidance’ for the period of mourning was sent by the UK Cinema Associationto its members yesterday shortly before the Queen’s death was confirmed. The guidance states there is “no expectation” for businesses – including cinemas – to close unless they wish to.
A government update received by the Ukca today and sent to members does not include any changes to this advice.

ReviewDirected by Ayan Mukerji, the film constantly tries to make your jaw drop to the floor with the visual effects, but since we never empathise with the characters on screen, it remains a distant spectacle.Sowmya RajendranYouTubeBrahmastra: Part One – Shiva, directed by Ayan Mukerji, was announced eight years ago and is one of the most expensive Indian films made till date with a whopping budget of Rs 410 crore. Considering the time and money put into the project – planned as a trilogy – one expects nothing less than a marvellous spectacle unfolding on screen. And if your reading list has never included fantasy series such as The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, this ‘astraverse’ extravaganza that marries Hollywood style superhero films with Hindu mythology may leave you impressed. Almost. The cinematic universe of Brahmastra is built around a secret society of rishis – known as the Brahmansh – who possess the powers to control different astras.

Superhero movies and romantic comedies agree: Love is the most powerful force in the universe. It compels iconic heroes as well as wayward lovers, resets the moral compass and cleanses the soul. That is the ethos behind “Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva,” the first installment in a Bollywood trilogy from director Ayan Mukerji. The film is both sci-fi/fantasy and Bollywood romance, an ambitious introduction to a mythological cinematic universe with the expected hiccups of building a massive world from scratch. It’s an admirable attempt and unmissable theatrical experience for any Bollywood fan.

With only one major new release, the horror film Barbarian featuring Pennywise himself Bill Skarsgard, opening wide on over 2200 screens, this one stands the best chance at finishing first. Tracking for Barbarian has it sitting slightly better than the recent horror disappointment The Invitation, which finished its inaugural weekend just under 7 Million. The upside for this Airbnb thriller is its R rating and its quite stellar reviews, sitting at an impressive 94 on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing. I think those two factors and the start of the fall movie season will see this one actually perform better than expected and start around 10 Million.
The real wild card of this weekend will be the release of the Hindi language film Brahmāstra: Part One- Shiva opening on 750 screens.

Alia Bhatt, all smiles and with a noticeable baby bump, gave a sweet ending to the last leg of the ‘Brahmastra Part One: Shiva’ promotions by singing the superhit song ‘Kesariya’, which has garnered 165 million-plus views on YouTube.
Dressed in a white T-shirt, paired with denims and a lavender blazer, the expecting mother was accompanied by her husband Ranbir Kapoor and the film’s helmer Ayan Mukerji.
When asked what her favourite song from the film was, Alia decided to stun everyone by just singing it. She sang the number that was originally sung by Arijit Singh. The song, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, has been set to music by Pritam.
Alia, who’s delivered back-to-back critically acclaimed performances in ‘Gangubai Kathiyawadi’ and ‘Darlings’, was at her diplomatic best when a journalist asked her if this is the right climate to release ‘Brahmastra’.
She said: “Which climate? There is no such a thing.

This was yet another soft weekend at the international box office with no major fresh titles and as summer fully closes out in Europe and beyond.
On the positive side, the UK’s National Cinema Day helped buoy that market with ticket prices slashed to £3 at 643 participating theaters on Saturday. There were 1.6M admissions worth about £5M — tickets in the Republic of Ireland went for 4 euros a pop and an exact monetary total has not yet been provided. However, the admissions rep almost three times the equivalent day in pre-pandemic times, according to the UK Film Distributors’ Association.
The scheme gave a boost to such films as Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru and Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick. The latter crossing 100M in the market.
Elsewhere, as we continue to track the can-it-get-to-1B dino-meter, Universal/Amblin’s Jurassic World Dominion is now at 994.6M global.
