Sex & Nudity

  • Donnie and his girlfriend make out on top of a bed. No nudity is shown.
  • Donnie and his friends talk about the Smurfs engaging in an orgy in explicit detail. Played for comedy.
  • While taking hypno therapy, Donnie talks about sexual fantasies, and even starts to undo his pants, but the therapist breaks his trance, and no nudity is shown.
  • Donnie Darko's bedroom has at least 2 posters on his wall and one on his ceiling of scantily/bikini clad women. No overt nudity is seen.

  • Donnie and his sister throw insults back and forth at each other using numerous F-bombs in differing contexts.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several instances of smoking around a young girl
  • One brief depiction of a teenager using cocaine.
  • We see a few instances of characters drinking alcohol.
  • Teenage boys smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol on occasion.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Lengthy shots of a character with a damaged, bleeding eye in one scene that were particularly graphic.
  • Frank the Bunny is very scary looking. His mask has a very demonic, almost bug like appearance, and his tendency to come out of nowhere can be intense. His voice also sounds very creepy.
  • Donnie's story causes the viewer to contemplate mortality and the nature of reality.
  • The entire atmosphere that the film gives off is very intense.
  • The last 20 minutes of the movie or so are bizarre and quite haunting. The ending will stick with you for weeks after watching.
  • Donnie repeatedly tries to stab Frank in the eye with a kitchen knife through a force field (not gory but potentially disturbing/intense).
  • Potentially disturbing material throughout.
  • A few characters die.
  • Gretchen's mother was implied to have been stabbed to death by her stepfather.

  • References to a character having Child pornography. It getting called Kiddie porn.

Violence & Gore

  • Donnie is shown shooting frank in the eye. Frank falls down and the wound is shown for a few seconds.
  • A teenage girl dies after being accidentally run over by a car. No blood.
  • A teenager is shot in the eye. The initial gunshot is not seen, but the bloody wound is seen after.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • When the jet engine crashes into Donnie's room, it happens out of nowhere, and is very loud. It's a pretty effective jumpscare.
