Crazy, man, just crazy
gridoon5 March 2006
If you're looking for a totally crazy and off-the-wall film, you should try to track down a copy of this one (it won't be easy). It has everything: threesomes, car and motorcycle chases, ESP, cold war espionage and naked female assassins (only one, in a very brief scene, but I thought I should mention it). The only things missing are narrative coherence and directorial competence; at some points the continuity is so poor that it seems as if parts of the movie are missing. But considering its rarity, as well as the fact that it's Nico Mastorakis' second film after the notorious "Devil In Mykonos", this one has definite cult possibilities. It's not, however, as much of a flesh fest as the other reviewer suggests. (**)

..... (Speechless)

Fancy wasting your time? Then check out this Grecian offering, which boasts two of the most obnoxious men you'll ever meet. They're cards, they really are.. stealing things from incredibly stupid people, sleeping with whoever they want despite being unbelievably ugly and dodging fake looking bullets and dodgy motorcycle thugs like there's no tomorrow. Who better to protect the life of a psychic who has witnessed a murder in Poland, I ask you? 'Hilarious' adventures with naked maids, rude talking birds and stripping at gunpoint ensue.

It is difficult for me express just how appalling this film is. Every single aspect of it stinks in a way few films do, and it takes a special kind of non-talent to make something this offensively bad. The metaphor that I could use is that of a modern art picture, where people throw random amounts of paint at the canvas and hope it will turn out to be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, all we end up with here is a mess, and a tedious and pointless one at that. It isn't even worth me thinking up an amusing punchline to end the review like I usually do. So I'll simply close by stating for the record I wouldn't wish this movie on my worst enemy, and if any of the actors/ directors/ caterers involved in this crap had any sort of career afterwards, the world is indeed a tragic place..

Sigh kick
NoDakTatum7 October 2023
This Mastorakis film plays like one of John Holmes' Johnny Wadd films, but without the hardcore sex. Bob (Peter Winter) and Ches (Hristos Nomikos) are two bachelors on the make. They are hired by Geraldine (Jessica Dublin) to guard her and her daughter, Christine (Maria Aliferi). Christine is psychic, and knows all the details of a political murder. The bad guys are after the ladies, and Bob and Ches try to protect the women, when they are not sleeping with half the female population of Greece. The climax tells us that Geraldine and Christine are not the helpless damsels-in-distress we think they are, and Bob and Ches race to stop another assassination.

Sometimes a film set in the 1970's is quaint and watchable but all the bell-bottoms and round spinning beds distract from the slight story. Mastorakis fills the screen with sex. The men are as naked as the women, and the sex scenes are long. They distract from the lame action scenes, which consists of unexciting car chases and very fake blood. The psychic can defend herself by setting her enemies on fire at will, it is never explained why the women need these two dolts to protect them in the first place, except to have a movie. Also known as "The Para Psychics," I believe the English title was supposed to be "A Pair of Psychics," since "The Para Psychics" makes about as much sense as the plot. If you do happen upon this, skip it. The editing was done with a chainsaw, the dubbing is hopeless, the action dull, and the heroes are jerks. If you like Mediterranean women on the other hand (or either hand), this might be for you.

The Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll.
morrison-dylan-fan26 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Nearing the end of ICM's poll on the best films of 1976,I started gathering up the final titles to view. Taking the Italian Crime flick Live Like a Cop,Die Like a Man (1976-also reviewed) off the shelf,I spotted Nico Mastorakis debut, which led to me finding out what colour the eyes of death are.

View on the film:

Shot before, but coming out after Island of Death (1976-also reviewed), writer/director Nico Mastorakis scrapes off the kerb a bucket load of Grindhouse sleaze, with sexy naked ladies (and naked men) Action chase sequences shot guerrilla style and loud 70's fashion all being wonderfully rolled into an un-hinged creation. For the editing, the uncredited editor goes for the unique approach of cutting it with a rusty hacksaw, which adds to the slimy atmosphere,as delightfully poor ESP Sci-Fi and frantic action scenes are cut with an axe. Keeping in line with his directing, the wacky screenplay by Mastorakis scoops up boo-hiss bad guys, naked assassins and a peculiar mother/daughter ESP bond,as the blue eyes of death light up.

007 On LSD
Falconeer18 May 2020
The low rating for this seminal piece of 70's weirdness is absolutely ridiculous. "Death Has Blue Eyes" tells a fascinating and unusual tale of a pair of hustlers who happen to meet up with a pair of mysterious blonde ladies, who both have the ability to read minds, and can cause a person's heart to stop just by sheer will. Starting out as a truly off-the-wall buddy movie, with the likable scam artists Ches & Robert, stealing a guy's identification and plane ticket and jet setting into Athens for an adventure of debauchery, they meet up with Christina and her "mother" Geraldine, when they get caught trying to bill their hotel meal to the room of the women, who then drag the guys into a world of danger and espionage! Light comedy soon turns serious, and very strange as the men discover the blonde ladies are not what they seem. Told with mind bending style and color, music and eye popping sets, the audience is treated to shootouts, helicopter attacks, motorcycle chases, explosions, assassinations, along with frequent nudity, "Death Has Blue Eyes" is so much fun that you would have to be unconscious to not enjoy it. I'm surprised at how few people actually appreciate this absolute gem of avant garde cinema. No obscure title is more deserving of a digital restoration than "Death Has Blue Eyes," and I would personally consider the bluray as "The Holy Grail" of art house/grindhouse excellence. Strangely director Nico Mastorakis' earlier movie "Island of Death" has received the coveted restoration, and that film is basically a worthless, artless piece of junk..a fact that the director himself admits in interviews. However if that resurfaced then it means there is a chance for this one also. Presently available in a severely cut VHS bootleg, (my copy only runs 76 minutes), it is time for this movie to be rediscovered.

AN ODD COMBINATION
kirbylee70-599-52617928 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Director Nico Mastorakis has his fans out there. Enough that there is a small cult following for the director and his films. You can agree or disagree with them but he was able to put forth a number of decent films in his career and Arrow Video has obliged those fans by releasing some of those films in pristine condition.

DEATH HAS BLUE EYES though is a combination of genres that never quite gels and becomes a worthwhile foray into his films. It's his first feature and it feels like it. Peter (Robert Kowalski) arrives in Greece to be greeted by his friend Ches (Hristos Nomikos) at the airport. Both are adventurous ne'er do wells and con artists who make their lives off of others. Peter made his way to Greece by stealing the plane ticket of a man in a washroom and Ches lives off of a wealthy woman he's shacking up with.

Eating at a restaurant where they attempt to slip the bill to two ladies eating nearby they are asked to join them. The ladies are Geraldine (Jessica Dublin) and Christine (Maria Aliferi). Geraldine, the older of the two has a proposition she offers Peter to come work for her which he turns down. She brushes off the costs of their meal and they leave.

A three way sexual encounter between the two and Ches new girlfriend results in their being thrown from the house of the woman supporting Ches. With nowhere to go and no funds they contact Geraldine and accept the job. It turns out that she is Christine's mother and Christine is a powerful psychic. Now a group of mobsters is trying to kidnap Christine and they hire the duo as protection for her.

What follows is plenty of fighting sequences, chases, plot twists and more that add up to a movie that should be better than it is. The problem is the flighty back and forth between genres that never quite mold together to form the whole. Is it a sex comedy? A spy movie? A horror film? An action film? A giallo? All of these are given brief moments in the film while never coming together.

In spite of the film being not solid enough to hold the interest of most movie lovers, Arrow Video has done their best to bring the film to the fans who've only been able to find bootlegs in the past. In addition to the film being a new 2K restoration from the original 35 mm camera negative supervised by Mastorakis, they've included some interesting extras as well. These include an interview with Mastorakis, and interview with actress Maria Aliferi, "Dancing with Death" tracks from the original soundtrack, the original theatrical trailers, an image gallery, a reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys and for the first pressing only an illustrated collector's booklet featuring writing by Julian Grainger.

Fans of Mastorakis will want to add this one to their collection. For others it might be worth watching out of curiosity. But on the whole this is one I most likely won't revisit and that most will want to pass by.

Girl Bomb

Ok so the Greek title is quite different from the international one as I can see here. Well I watched this exploitation flick and while I wouldn't call this perfect in any sense of the word, it does the job - or what you should expect from it more or less. Not so much blood here, still enough death and violence overall and some chase scenes. Oh and a lot of nudity! Although you can tell there are some actresses in here who had clauses or a deal with the director not to be depicted nude (or have their bare breast shown).

Now that may sound extreme, but I'm just letting you know. Also do not watch this to get titilated - there is not much in the sense of sexy time going on - a lot of interruption before things get too heated. But the movie scores otherwise (no pun intended), like with the completely mad premise of a woman being able to mind control and other stuff that those blue eyes are able to do.

Our two main male characters on the other hand are not really likeable. I reckon it is with the woman we feel most sympathetic with ... but even there we may take issue(s) ... the movie has a lot of flaws, which can be seen as weakness or as something you relish in - especially considering the budget and the mayhem depicts - again the idea(s) alone are far out to say the least.

Depending on your taste you'll have fun or be furious after watching this ...

Everything all combined into one!!!!!

Why in this big, blue world would anyone give this movie, "To Koritsi Vomva," measly ones, therefore taking the throne of shame? I thought this was genius! Of course, most people think of this as kind of like, let's say, a non-sensical "War and Peace" because nothing interesting happens here, but I was able to understand this movie so well. I mean, it's romance, mystery, drama, and action all rolled into one unforgettable (although this movie is actually forgettable as evidenced by the negative reviews) flick! Well, at times this movie has parts that are just plain dull, but still, "To Koritsi Vomva" is one great foreign flick that can be viewed when there's nothing to do!!!!!

Super weird!
BandSAboutMovies5 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Nico Mastorakis may have released Island of Death first, but he made this before that film.

So first off, wow. This movie that defies categorization. Is it a giallo? A science fiction movie? A sleazy caper about two guys who really should just have sex with one another and instead have threeways because they're all weird about coming out to one another? Who can say?

This just came out from Arrow, presented for the very first time in a new HD master in both widescreen and full-frame versions, and I have to say, "Where has this movie been all my life?" I say this and by all my life, I mean after puberty, because wow. This film is not shy at all about its love scenes.

Ches (Chris Nomikos, The Ceremony) is a hustling gigolo who picks up Bob Kovalski (Peter Winter) at the Athens airport, immediately hooks him up with a girl he's sleeping with and then they all get kicked out of a place that doesn't belong to him.

After some hijinks - which lead into the story instead of the story being the reason for said hijinks, an inversion of my typical explanation of "This happens and hijinks ensure" - the two meet the wealthy Geraldine Steinwetz (Jessica Dublin, who was in everything from The Toxic Avenger movies to Trinity Is Still My Name, Sex of the Witch and Troma's War) and her psychic daughter Christine (Maria Aliferi).

The whole thing is yet another scam, but this time on the two leads, and numerous people want Christine dead and our heroes go from guys out to get laid - probably by one another - to being caught in the middle of an international incident. That's because Geraldine is really a medium herself as well as an East-German agent who is using the young girl to try to kill a Russian leader.

Also known as The Para Psychics, this is without a doubt the only movie I've ever seen where psychic abilities are used to stop an erection.

This movie is really unlike anything I've ever seen before, a mix of Confessions of a Window Cleaner with early 70's dark conspiracy thriller and a little bit of occult/psychic action to spice things up. It's a cocktail that should not by any rights taste as good as it does, but it's refreshingly delectable.
