Good tension, weak plot
mindless_junk26 May 2003
The movie is about a crew of anonymous sailors controlling the top secret Korean nuclear submarine known as the Phantom. Our main character became an unwilling crew when the government officially erased him from existence...

The premise of the movie is good, though it would make even a more interesting movie if that idea was exploited more. The war scenes involving the several submarine were rather unrealistic. Why didn't the Japanese submarine use active SONAR to search for remaining but had to endanger itself? I guess it is pretty typical to portray the incompetence of Japanese army in a typical Korean movie.

The acting was good. The tension was good.

One side note. This was probably the 3rd recent Korean movie that portrayed America negatively. I sense the rising Korean patriotism may be fueling this displeasures towards formal colonial master... Life imitates arts, and the changing attitude of Koreans towards America is showing...

Strong submarine film from Korea

I have seen lots of submarine films and this is one of the best (after Das Boot and The Hunt for Red October). Very much similar to Crimson Tide, not quite as sophisticated but even more powerful. Tension is strong and unlike in Hollywood films, you really can't be sure what happens in the end until you see it.

The Phantom Submarine is so top secret that it's crew has been assembled from people that are officially dead, even their relatives don't know that they are still alive. Nice idea that could have been explored bit further, but there's limits what can be shown in two hours.

korean movie was thought to be made by little money & without special effect. but if you see this extraordinary movie ,you will be surprised because it is as real as 'crimson tide' or 'das boot' not only this special effect the power of this movie is also come from resonable story that involve south & north korea's conflict & korean rage about japan's vice until1950

Why is it that SouthKoreans are so ungrateful to the US? If it wasn't for the US military maintaining a presence in S Korea, they would be North Korea. BTW - The Host was an awesome movie. The anti-American sentiment displayed in your movie is distasteful and childish. Why is it that SouthKoreans are so ungrateful to the US?
