Little and Large were, along with the almost forgotten Lenny( Bennett) and Gerry ( Stevens), a double act hired by the BBC when Morecambe and Wise defected to ITV in 1978. Their act consisted of gormless straight man Syd Little, who attempted to remain serious or start playing a song on his guitar, being constantly interrupted Eddie Large, whose repertoire consisted of impersonations of popular celebrities of the day, corny jokes and comedy versions of pop songs.

Even then, Little and Large's shows were aimed more at small children and grandparents, I found them hilarious until I was about 12,and they were never considered in the same league as The Two Ronnies and became regarded as old fashioned and unfunny by the late eighties. Yet Syd and Eddie can claim to have outlasted other well known duos such as The Two Ronnies, Cannon and Ball and Morecambe and Wise, and their shows at their peak of popularity in the early 80s had 14 million viewers.

I've given them five out of ten as Little and Large knew that their act had a following, managed to have peak time shows on ITV and BBC1 for 15 years, and seemed pleasant enough off screen. On the other hand, an act that was quite threadbare and unfunny to more demanding comedy fans fell out of favour as time went on, and by the nineties looked ancient. However, the which star is this starting their car sketch which gave them their big break on national television will always raise a smile from me.

A poor substitute for genius

When the BBC's prize-winning and audience-charming comedians Morecambe and Wise left the corporation in the late seventies, the search was on for a replacement, and by signing up Syd Little and Eddie Large, they were certainly settling for less. Although they were, in essence, two rather likable jolly jokers who wouldn't have been out of place in the theatre at the end of a seaside resort's pier or any boozy British nightclub, they were hardly a substitute for Eric and Ernie. They were scarcely even a 'proper' double act - Syd wasn't so much a straight man as a gormless stooge, whilst Eddie did poor impersonations (always of Deputy Dawg, for some reason) and attempted to sing the odd ballad. The overall effect was embarrassing rather than funny, and when this lame ruse failed they fell back - with disconcerting regularity - on such politically incorrect ploys as boxing kangaroos, 'funny foreigners' and topless girls (seen from the back only) which might have been charming in more skilled hands, but which only served to underline the desperation of this cut-price televised cabaret. Little and Large vanished from our screens back in the nineties, but they're still around and if this kind of thing is your bag, catch them at a caravan park near you.

Awful

Really unfunny double act who regrettably got their break on the BBC after Morecambe and Wise went to ITV. The first time I saw these 2 was on Seaside Special early Saturday evenings - a classic for seeing bad amateur acts.

In the great list of double acts this rates as amongst the worst along with Cannon and Ball. I assume these 2 are now reduced to Christmas Pantomimes and a stint at the seaside peer.

Rarely has such rubbish been on the BBC and as a license payer I feel rather indignant. Same unfuuny jokes, same formats week after week after week - terrible !! I note not available on DVD - good.

''Steps back in amazement!''

Warning: Spoilers
'Little & Large', like 'Cannon & Ball', arrived soon after 'Morecambe & Wise' ( who personally I am not fond of ) fell out of favour with viewers. Despite their following at the time ( this show ran on the BBC from 1978 to 1991 ), the two have never really been regarded as comedy legends. Well, legends they are most certainly not, but they are two entertaining comedians who deserve far more credit than they have received over the years.

This long running BBC gave the two their lucky break following the failure of their dire ITV series 'The Little & Large Telly Show'. Each edition opened with Syd warming up the audience with a few light hearted gags, only for Eddie to come on stage and interrupt him with impersonations of Eamonn Andrews, Jimmy Saville, Deputy Dawg, Magnus Mackisson and Cliff Richard.

The best sketch was Toy's Hospital in which Eddie and Syd play toys who have been damaged by their owners over Christmas. Eddie, dressed as a bunny rabbit, complains angrily that his owner purposely cut off his ear so he could say ''well, what's this 'ere!''. The dire American soap 'Dallas' was, quite rightly, sent up something rotten. The continuity announcer reveals that since being shot, JR has had trouble holding down his beer, we then see him down a tankard of beer, only for the booze to spray out of his stomach like a watering can! The two also indulged in a witty 'Scrooge' style musical number in which snow kept landing on Eddie's head. Also very funny was a spoof of 'Grease' which, surprisingly, featured Eddie as 'Rab C. Nesbitt'!

The show ended in 1991 due to a decline in their popularity. They have not been seen on television since and the show has since been elusive of a DVD release. Not great comedy ( far from it ) but overall 'Little & Large' at least allowed for unassuming, safe entertainment.
