One hundred seventy features have been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category for the 90th Academy Awards. That’s 25 more than 2016. Assuming they all book their qualifying runs in New York and Los Angeles, the members of the documentary branch have just a few more weeks to see as many films as possible and file their votes for the shortlist of 15 to be announced in December. They’re each supposed to watch an assigned list of about 20 films, plus as many more as they can.

Horror films are built on our voyeuristic impulses. Our desire to witness or experience the obscene, the taboo, and the grotesque draws us into films about crazed killers or unseen forces. We don’t just want to be shocked, we want to be vulnerable. The stalking scene is a staple of the genre because it involves us in the filmmaking process by providing us a point of view: usually third person from a victim or first person from a killer. Unlike a chase scene, where both parties are aware of the game, the stalking often involves an oblivious participant. These are the slowest and most methodical scenes. There’s no rush to where we’re going because there is no destination to get to. Once the participant becomes aware, there’s only four options: run, hide, fight, or die.

Kevin Pollak‘s latest movie is a documentary that questions whether pain is necessary to create the kind of comedy that resonates. Misery Loves Comedy sees an enormous amount of professional funny people explaining their experiences, and Pollak joins us this week to discuss the myth of the tortured artist and what he learned crafting 700 hours of footage into a 90-minute movie. Plus, Geoff and I will dissect a serious scene from a comedy — specifically the To The Pain speech from The Princess Bride — in order to see how one cup of dirt and three cups of sugar can create meaningful dramatic moments in a movie that makes you laugh. Double plus, we’ll have a spoiler-free interrogation reviewification of Avengers: Age of Ultron that sends us to the corner store for ear plugs. "The phones have been ringing off the hook!" Robert Morse exclaims, which isn't surprising given the 83-year-old actor's turn in the Mad Men split-season finale last Sunday night. (Here there be spoilers, so anyone who has not yet seen the episode, you may want to turn back now. Seriously.) Having played Sterling Cooper & Partners' co-founder and resident Zen philosopher/Japanaphile Bertrand Cooper on the show for seven seasons, Morse saw his character shuffle off this mortal coil right after his character witnessed Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. The path to the Iron Throne is a treacherous one, but at least on Sunday night TV, the late, unlamented Joffrey Baratheon already has a villainous successor. Mad Men's Lou Avery (played by Allan Havey) may be taking up space in Don Draper's corner office, but he's come nowhere near filling his shoes. In the Season Seven premiere, "Time Zones," Lou revealed himself to be a smug, complacent hack whose dismissive treatment of Peggy and Dawn reeked of casual sexism and racism. (Anyone who thought Dawn was happier with her new,...

I don't think there's enough sunshine in all of California to brighten up the dark state of affairs everyone is in as Mad Men begins the first half of its last lap. Where does one begin in this cold January of 1969? Peggy crumpled on the floor in sobs of her great-big-investment Upper West Side apartment? Roger passed out naked on the floor of his filthy, garbage-littered hotel-room-cum-counterculture-commune? Ken – still sporting an eye patch from his little shotgun mishap with the Chevy execs – completely overwhelmed and overworked? A happy, suntanned Pete – seriously,...

It seems to be a very popular time for Korean actors stepping behind the camera, with Ha Jung Woo and Yoo Ji Tae having helmed “Fasten Your Seatbelts” and “Mai Ratima” respectively. Korean espionage action comedy “The Spy: Undercover Operation” had a pretty interesting trip to the screen, having originally been set to be directed by Lee Myung Se, known for arty outings like “Duelist” and “Nowhere to Hide”, for blockbuster producer Yoon Je Kyun, the man behind hits “Haeundae”, “Sector 7” and others. However, Lee and Yoon clashed over the film’s (then going by “Mr K”) direction, the former apparently taking things off at a more esoteric tangent, and the director left the project while in the middle of shooting in Thailand. The reins were handed to first time helmer Yi Seung Jun, who had worked for Yoon several times as assistant director and who got things back on a more commercially friendly track. The film stars actor Sol Kyung Gu (“Cold Eyes”) as Chul Soo, an average businessman who’s actually one of the country’s top spies, a fact...

Ah, the great British pastime, caravanning! Yes, the boys and girls, most of whom probably wouldn’t know one end of a caravan from another are off to try to sell accessories to the camping market. When the call comes through to tell them to pack an overnight bag, no doubt visions of sunny Dubai must flash through the minds of some of them, but it’s not the exotic climes of the UAE they’re heading to, but the rather less exotic Birmingham, to take in the Caravan Expo and try to decide on items that they can sell at it.

Despite already being a significant portion of the way into production, Korean auteur Lee Myeong-se (The Duelist, Nowhere To Hide) has been fired as the director of upcoming spy comedy Mister K and replaced by Lee Seung-joon. While this sort of mid-production replacement is rare in any country - and never a positive sign - it is especially so in Korea where directors are given unusual latitude and control over the films they make. Lee has long been a polarizing director - his work is very much love or hate - and given that his replacement is a first time director whose previous experience comes as an assistant on mass entertainment blockbuster Haeundae and Quick - both about as far from Myeong-se's style as...

Love him or hate him, you simply cannot ignore him! It's been five years since Lee Myung-Se has made a film, M, one of my favourite films of 2007 - arguably the strongest year for cinema in this young new millenium. He polarized the twitch writing staff with his gorgeous wuxia The Duelist, and most people would agree that Nowhere To Hide was one of the key films at getting popular South Korean Cinema noticed around the globe in the very late 1990s. The man uses genre as a way of experimenting pure visuals and barely contextualized emotion. But I digress. He's currently about to embark on shooting his True Lies-esque spy comedy called Mr. K and this excites me greatly. While the greatest secret agent in...

Top Korean star Park Joong Hoon returns to the genre which first helped propel him to mega stardom with buddy cop action comedy “Officer of the Year” (aka “The Apprehenders”). Written and directed by first timer Lim Chan Ik, the film has a real old school feel, harking back to the good old days of tough talking, bickering cops trying not to kill each other as they track down a particularly nasty serial rapist. Fans should get a real kick out the fact that having been well known for playing the young upstart in the likes of the seminal “Two Cops” and “Nowhere to Hide”, here he essays the veteran detective role usually taken on by Ahn Sung Ki, with Lee Seon Gyun (“Petty Romance”) as his youthful rival. The film pits the two against each other as the top dogs of the feuding Seoul police stations of Mapo and Seodaemun.

Legendary Korean director Im Kwon Taek returns with his 101st feature in “Hanji”, which also happens to be his first filmed in HD. As he did previously with the folk music tradition of Pansori, the film again sees him exploring one of Korea’s cultural arts in Hanji paper art, attempting to combine a historical perspective with a humanistic narrative about its place in modern Korea and in defining the country’s national identity. As usual, Im assembles an impressive cast, headlined by top actor Park Joong Hoon (“Nowhere to Hide”) in the lead, and with the director working again with actress Kang Su Yeon, some twenty years after she starred in his acclaimed “Come, Come, Come Upwards”. The film follows Park as civil servant Pil Yong who becomes involved in a project promoting Hanji, the traditional Korean art of making paper, attempting to raise the profile of the practice...

Kim Jee-woon's I Saw the Devil is only the latest revenge fable to hit the world from the studios of Seoul. Why all the anger?
Next month, South Korean director Kim Jee-woon's new film, I Saw the Devil, is released on these shores. It's a bloody revenge fable, bulging with 360-degree stab-cams, decapitations and lines like, "Your nightmare is only beginning." Tough stuff, to be sure, and aficionados of the rough street justice favoured by a certain strain of Asian cinema are in for a treat.
So why is it that such gory stories of vengeance have become – to western eyes at least – the dominant feature of Korean cinema? Kim himself contributed to the genre in 2005 with A Bittersweet Life, and there's Park Chan-wook's phenomenal revenge trilogy (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Lady Vengeance and Oldboy); and, though they're not driven at their cores by revenge, it would be foolish to...

Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. There's no escaping from your nightmares. Dreams are like a lottery. On a lucky day, you'll find that you've just come into loads of money, moved into a swanky mansion with a gold-plated swimming pool and quaffed the most expensive champagne that money can buy for breakfast, dinner and tea. On a bad day, however, it's the pits, as you will either be forced to confront your darkest fears or face the prospect of a grisly, hideous death that's on a par with the demise of the Nazi baddies in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

Oh Warner Bros., you have outdone yourself yet again. Today we're greeted with eight new "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" TV spots that you've probably started to see on the small screen already. Surprisingly enough, there is new stuff to see from the film, even if it's only those little teases of dialogue we didn't realize we were missing so much from the full-length trailers until now. In other words, I'm telling you they did include that hilarious Fleur Delacour line from the seven Potters chapter.
Though there are eight TV spots in all, there were five in particular that really caught our eye. The other three tended to rehash footage we've already seen, but since we're nice, we've included all eight of them below.
The first two videos that we love -- "Only Hope" (above) and "Best Hope We Have" (below) -- feature the seven Potters heavily,...

Harry Potter: HogwartsA total of eight television spots for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 became available today. Four of the best and most comedic are shown below including: "They are Coming," "Only Hope," "Nowhere to Hide," and "Nowhere Left." All four clips are thirty seconds long and "Only Hope" is the funniest, as fans can see a cross-dressing Potter in the clip.
In the poster seen left, a burning Hogwarts is shown as this series of films will finish in 2011. The tagline for the poster repeats this theme with: "It All Ends Here." However, author J.K. Rowling is ending his series with a flourish of excitement as the clips inside suggest.
The synopsis for the film:
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final adventure in the Harry Potter film series, is a much-anticipated motion picture event to be told in two full-length parts
Part 1 begins as Harry,...

Wait, wait, I just heard a barrel being scrapped. It’s really saying something when Jean Claude Van Damme is having his movies remade by Hollywood. But that’s exactly what’s happening, folks. One of his more popular efforts – Time Cop – is being retooled by Universal.
Of course the Muscles From Brussels won’t be returning to the role of Agent Walker, but at least he can console himself with the recent excellence of Jcvd. Which was a brilliant post-modern actioner!
According to reports, Jean-Claude was interested in returning, and presumably studio executives laughed in his face. Instead Universal are lining up somebody younger, and one who can actually act in a believable enough fashion.
The project has been chugging away for the past four years with the production finally getting into gear and finding its feet. Time Cop featured a time-travelling super hero cop attempting to thwart the...

Odd couples have long been a staple of the romantic comedy genre around the world, and they don’t come much more potentially wacky than a useless gangster and an unemployed college grad with a considerable age gap between them. This is the pairing featured in debut writer director Kim Kwang Sik’s “My Dear Desperado”, with top Korean actor Park Joong Hoon (still probably best known for his awesome tough turn in “Nowhere to Hide”) and Jung Yoo Mi (recently in “Like You Know it All”) playing the couple in question who find themselves drawn together in unlikely circumstances. The film begins with Se Jin (Jung Yoo Mi) leaving her small town for Seoul after getting a job at a prestigious It company. Unfortunately for her, the firm soon goes bust, leaving her unemployed but too proud to head home and admit the truth to her domineering father. Moving...

“Fair Love” offers a twist on the usual Korean romances by charting the progress of a May-December relationship between an older man and a young woman half his age. Although this is an interesting enough premise on its own, the film is an even more intriguing prospect thanks to the presence of Ahn Sung Ki, the legendary actor and award winning industry veteran whose career has seen him appear in countless classics including “Nowhere to Hide”, “Duellist” and “Radio Star”. The talented young actress and television star Lee Ha Na (recently in “Le Grand Chef”) steps up to play his love interest, with indie writer, director and producer Shin Yeon Shick (“A Great Actor”) at the helm. Ahn Sung Ki stars as Hyung Man, a never married man in his fifties, who runs a small camera repair studio while he goes quietly about his dull though comfortable life. Love comes...

We're already a handful of days into October, which means that Halloween is only a few weeks away. Musically, it's one of the best times of the year, because the songs surrounding the holiday tend to be either fantastically campy novelty tunes or genuinely scary hard rock and metal tunes. MTV Music's Halloween playlist covers both ends of that spectrum, from Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" to Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" to My Chemical Romance's "The Black Parade" to Ray Parker, Jr.'s "Ghostbusters." Each of these songs — along with "Monster Mash" and anything by a band fronted by Glenn Danzig — would make any Halloween playlist extra spooky.
But the one genre in the heaviest rotation this month should always be horrorcore, the short-lived, much-maligned gangsta rap subgenre that didn't last very long and produced very few memorable records. Tha Flatlinerz made one underrated album...
