Terrible waste of the talented Brigitte Maier
Having watched virtually the entire Something Weird Video porn catalog (and that's no joke, hundreds of XXX and soft-porn titles), I need to set the record straight on this sad excuse of a porn film, as well as underline an ongoing fallacy of so many IMDb "reviews". Many if not the lion's share of IMDb contributors believe reviewing is merely a popularity contest, not unlike the awarding of Oscars. So prior to my chiming in, both reviews of "The Lover" are highly misleading -confusing admiration for its leading lady, the ultra-lovely Brigitte Maier, with the junker she's trapped in.
No, this is not an interesting showcase for Brigitte. On the contrary it is merely one of many terrible one-day wonders she was cast in, and near the bottom of that barrel. It lacks the campiness and downright far-fetched nature of her Blaxploitation effort "Tongue" and certainly has none of the artistry of her European-made movies.
The SWV print is in good condition, but the sex scenes are desultory. With an okay soul jazz musical score, the episodes are mostly viewed by Maier and her would-be brothel madam using the hoary device of peering through doors at couples humping. Maier's progression from sexually-harassed waitress to whore is uninteresting, just a setup for one of porn's corniest payoffs: having sex with a guy who afterward flashes his badge and says "You're under arrest" for prostitution. (The only cornier ending involves a protagonist getting the clap.)
Besides the voyeurism, along the way we get mixed-combo action as a Black girl humped to an instrumental version of Carole King's "It's Too Late", a very fake facial with the girl dribbling imitation cum out of her mouth, and other dull stuff. The emphasis on tight closeup cunnilingus is overdone, and most of the guys on screen look like poor imitations of soft-core hero Patrick Wright.
Maier deserved much, much better, than involvement in this garbage, badly made when judged by even the most lenient of porn standards.
