The Blumhouse head honcho fills us in on Happy Death Day 2U, Us, The Invisible Man and more
Even as Blumhouse Productions releases major cultural conversation pieces like Jordan Peele’s Get Out or classic horror reboots like David Gordon Green’s Halloween -- not to mention M. Night Shyamalan’s concluding chapter in his fan-favorite superhero trilogy, Glass -- the company still manages to stick to its roots as a purveyor of modestly-budgeted original horror movies, some of which become franchises all on their own terms.
Case in point is Happy Death Day, an effective mash-up of the slasher genre and Groundhog Day that became a sensation at the box office, thanks to its clever blend of horror and comedy and a knockout performance by Jessica Rothe. Having escaped the first film’s time loop -- in which she was brutally offed every time by a...

For Jason Blum, the Best Picture-nominated “BlacKkKlansman” marks the third project of his that has been nominated for an Academy Award. But this one, he says, feels different.
“It feels more fun because I can actually enjoy it and not be so nervous about it,” Blum told TheWrap. “I’ve been through it before. With awards season, you don’t know what events you have to go to, what’s good, what’s bad — it’s just been much, much easier this time around and I’ve been able to enjoy it more.”
In total, Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Director.

We asked producer Jason Blum if his The Invisible Man will relaunch Universal’s classic monsters.
A few years ago, Universal Pictures announced that it was going to revive its library of classic monsters -- Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man and others -- in a brand new, modernized shared movie franchise that would be known as the Dark Universe.
With Tom Cruise signed to star in The Mummy, Russell Crowe on board as Dr. Henry Jekyll, Javier Bardem attached to play Frankenstein’s monster, Johnny Depp in the mix as the Invisible Man and Angelina Jolie rumored to don the Bride’s wedding shroud, the Dark Universe seemed poised to make a big splash with audiences.

Universal's classic monster movie Creature From The Black Lagoon was almost remade by John Carpenter in the 1990s. So what happened?
It's one of the great suspense scenes in 50s genre cinema: a woman swims in the clear cool water of an Amazonian lagoon, blissfully unaware of the grotesque creature emerging from the depths beneath her. The score builds to a crescendo as the monster closes in, reaching out with a clawed, webbed hand...
Director Jack Arnold directed some of the best American sci-fi movies of the post-wwii era, and Creature From The Black Lagoon is perhaps his most famous. About a team of scientists investigating the fossilised remains of a strange man-fish hybrid - and discovering the thing still very much alive in the depths of the Amazon - the movie was a sizeable hit for Universal when it came out in early 1954.

Star Wars Rebels composer Kevin Kiner gives an interview on the influence that composer John Williams has had on him and the score of the animated TV Series. Kiner talks about his huge guitar collection and how having been in a rock band allows him to add something different to the score of Rebels. We even get to hear some temp tracks in development and how Kiner mixes in Williams touches from the score of Star Wars: A New Hope.
Rebels acts as a bridge between the time periods of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and it's really interesting to hear some of those familiar melodies come back, in some part, into the show.
I couldn't help checking out Kiner's IMDb page and over the years he has done the score for a lot of TV and a few video games. Some notable projects other than the aforementioned are Stargate Sg-1,...

Your muscles contort. Your skin bubbles and stretches. Your loins throb and your limbs writhe. You thrash in the throes of excruciating pain and agonizing pleasure. Before you even realize your body has betrayed you, like a snake shedding its skin, you are born anew. Perhaps the most visceral of the horror genres, body horror represents the most intimate of all fears. It’s the inescapable sensation that the shell housing every synchronized component keeping you alive is under attack. Yet it is more than simple infection; it is metamorphosis, a mutation that does not always spell death. More so, it may even be the start of a beautiful new life.
The human body has long been the enemy of horror films. One only has to look as early as The Invisible Man or The Wolfman for manifestations of physical forms undergoing irrevocable change. But the body horror genre encompasses...

This weekend while Disney is hoping you’ll flock in droves to see Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, Syfy will be premiering a new Oz-inspired creature feature that I suspect Sam Raimi would approve of: Flying Monkeys!
Robert Rodriguez’s niece-in-law Electra Avellan (aka one of the babysitter twins from Grindhouse), TV’s “The Invisible Man” Vincent Ventresca, and actor stuntman Alvin Chon star in the Syfy Original Movie about a teenage girl living in Gale, Kansas, who gets a new pet monkey that turns out to be an evil, flying shapeshifter.
Visual effects supervisor Robert Grasmere makes his directorial debut with this new spin on the creatures made famous as the Wicked Witch of the West’s henchmonsters. What, if anything, this Syfy flick has to do with the Land of Oz outside of mean monkeys with wings remains to be seen.

They appeared to promise so much, but sadly delivered so little. We take a look back at a few of the last 20 years’ biggest sci-fi disappointments...
Every year sees its fair share of good and bad sci-fi movies. But every so often, a movie comes along that, either because of its premise, its cast, its filmmaking pedigree or a mixture of all three, sounds so promising that we eagerly anticipate its arrival. Inevitably, there’s also a small percentage of such films which fail to live up to their early promise.
This list is devoted to this peculiar category of sci-fi movie: the ones that could have been so much better than they turned out. And to prevent the list from getting too long and rambling, we’ve restricted our selection to 20, and restricted the time frame to the last two decades. Your opinions will almost certainly vary, so feel...

A couple make small talk at dinner, interspersed with flashes of what is about to befall them. Their home is invaded and the husband is killed presumably during the attack. It was apparent their marriage is over. Flack (Eddie Cahill) says the wife called for help which must have been a feat itself considering she was bound, gagged and in the bedroom. There were two intruders and both wore ski masks, what we'd call balaclavas. The daughter Megan, (Heather Sossaman) was at the movie theatre. Mac (Gary Sinise) questions all the houses in the neighbourhood to find out "why the attackers chose this one?" Lindsay (Anna Belknap) processes the Cs as we get more flashes of the events from the night. She finds a ski mask under the husband, Ron's (Vincent Ventresca) Db and the empty box that was delivered. Jo (Sela Ward) finds a hair from a slashed painting.

Nan Martin was a leading character actress on stage, screen and television for over fifty years. She may be best remembered by horror fans for her role as Amanda Krueger (aka Sister Mary Helena), the mother of supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger, in 1987’s A Nightmare in Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, with Robert Englund as Freddy.
Martin was born in Decatur, Illinois, on July 15, 1927, and was raised in Santa Monica, California. She began performing on stage while attending UCLA, and worked as a fashion model in the late 1940s. She subsequently moved to New York, where she made her Broadway debut in 1950. She appeared in several other Broadway productions, and continued to perform on stage throughout her career.
She also appeared frequently on television from the mid-1950s, with roles in such series as The Twilight Zone as Laura Ford in the 1963 episode “The Incredible World of Horace Ford”, The Invaders,...

Our reviews for this past week are down a couple of shows, thanks primarily to baseball. Fringe was a no-show on account of the former, and Supernatural offered us a repeat of this season's premiere.
That said, we've got some new entries in the mix, which we'll be continuing as well. Blaine Kyllo chimes in with his thoughts on this past week's episodes of House, 30 Rock and Dollhouse (the latter of which returned to the airwaves after a one week absence).
With choices reduced on account of America's favorite pastime, viewers had a second look at shows they might have otherwise missed the first go-round, in their quest for something to watch, and this benefited FlashForward, which earned its best audience since its second week, picking up a 6.2 rating/10 share.
Meanwhile, according to the stats, Fringe, which has been a big ratings loser in its sophomore season, saw an uptick the week ending Oct.

Sci Fi preps launch in Spain
MADRID -- NBC Global Networks and Spain's Sogecable have signed a deal for the Sci Fi Channel to launch June 1 in Spain on Sogecable-owned satellite platform Digital Plus. Launched in the U.S. in 1992, Sci Fi already has international versions operating in the U.K., Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. The agreement with Sogecable is nonexclusive for Spain, paving the way for the channel to grow onto the burgeoning broadband and cable markets in the country. Sci Fi Spain's initial programming lineup will include the Spanish debuts of series Stargate Atlantis and Tremors, plus 7 Days, American Gothic, The Sentinel, Battlestar Galactica, Earth 2, The Incredible Hulk and The Invisible Man. The deal follows the debuts of new terrestrial broadcasters Cuatro and La Sexta -- launched in November and March, respectively. Both nets are betting heavily on U.S. series in their programming lineups.
