"Pyos v sapogakh" or "Dog in Boots" is a Soviet 20-minute cartoon from 1981 by Efim Gamburg, one of the Soviet Union's most known in terms of animation. But looking at this short film here, I cannot say he is one of their best, naturally only judging from this third of an hour. It's a fairly forgettable dog vs cat story and the way the cats (all cats) are depicted as the bad guys is fairly uncreative, almost manipulative. Also I did not really care for the main characters (the canines) at all and this already had an effect that the romance aspect in here did very little to nothing for me. Yes it has some decent moments, but these are not frequent enough. I also felt that this short film did not look good for one from 1981. There are many 35-year-old films from the animation genre that have better quality visually, there are actually several older Soviet cartoons that fit this description. All in all, this was not a great watch. The animal aspect alone cannot make up for the weaknesses. Thumbs down from me.
