Back when videos were entertaining
susansweb10 September 2002
This is one of my favorite videotapes in my collection (it helps to like Devo). This film is entertaining from start to finish with a plot to string the videos along. The videos, from 1975 demos to ones from "Oh No! It's Devo!", show an inventiveness that seemed to disappear from music videos as they increased in popularity. My only complaint is that I know there are other Devo videos not in this one or the earlier film, "Devo: The Men Who Make the Music" (inferior, my opinion); let's get those collected and put out as well!

Where's The DVD?

Great collection of Devo videos. Very creative, considering the low budgets on these. Many of these videos were once played on MTV, but MTV is a total waste of time these days. If imagination were gold these guys would be rich. Rhino was supposed to release 3 Devo DVDs, but where are they? WE WANT OUR DEVO DVDs! De-evolution IS REAL!

News on DVD availability
starforbram29 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I believe the reason there hasn't been a more recent comment since 2003 is because later that year Rhino released the DVD "The Complete Truth About De-evolution", which cannibalizes several sources including "We're All Devo". Because they were unable to use the brilliant "Are You Experienced?" video due to the objections of Hendrix' family, it may be a very long time (if ever) before they reissue those video packages in their original states. (No one objected to them covering the song--that was freely circulated. The video showed an actor playing Hendrix rising from a coffin, Screamin' Jay Hawkins style. Since you'll never see that clip through any legitimate outlet in the foreseeable future, that may or may not count as a spoiler. Anyway, his family complained and Devo's complied with their request to delete it from future packages ever since.)

If you're a younger person reading this because you've just discovered the band, "Complete Truth..." may be your best option for finding the material everyone else has been discussing here. Their astonishingly prescient vision of America actually came true in the Reagan era; the fact that they were the only ones who saw it coming means Devo has earned all our respect.

Give the past the slip!

Essential singles of the spuds from Ohio. In addition, the Devo philosophy is conveyed through vignettes featuring General Boy and Booji Boy (who's electrocuted, exposed to nuclear waste and has his rubber head smashed in an industrial press!), Timothy Leary, and the sleazy Rooter family.

Although the video clips look super-cheap in these days of desktop digital production, there's more inventiveness and wit to be found in any 30 seconds of this tape than 2 hours of MTV. Brightly hued images of mutation, sci-fi conformity and surprisingly surreal violence await, all set to the beat of some classic New Wave tunes. Imagine what they could've done with one of today's video budgets... Duty now for the future!

WORKS GREAT ON NINNIES AND TWITS!

only for spudboys and spudgirls, this is fun classic devo. intentionally camp and kitsch...some amateurish/making fun of the new wave genre that some considered them to be a part of. This video/mini-movie works better as devo's home videos....but overall pretty cool. I'm not sure how much this corrolates with "The Truth about Devolution" since that is only available on laserdisc and I do not own a laserdisc player..but it does seem to have the same cast including Dr. Timothy Leary.
