Related: Journalist’s Plea: Hollywood, Take Mel Gibson Off Your Blacklist I commissioned veteran investigative journalist Allison Hope Weiner to write an opinion piece on how she evolved from critical reporting of Mel Gibson’s verbal indiscretions and into a friend who made a case for him being given another chance in Hollywood on the 10th anniversary of The Passion of The Christ. She dropped her objectivity for the first time in her career, and delivered a provocative opinion piece that garnered 870 comments, all over the map. After, some reports alleged she should have disclosed that Gibson’s Icon was a seed investor in Thelip.tv, an Internet company where she hosts two shows, and where Gibson’s son, Will, is a former employee. Deadline has evaluated the situation. I stand behind her piece completely, but we decided our readers deserve transparency. Had I known about this tie, I would...

I love silent films! I have to say that from the beginning I have been fascinated with the silent years of film making. When I was growing up in the St. Louis area in the sixties there was a syndicated show called Who’s The Funnyman? Hosted by Cliff Norton this was a kid’s show which presented silent slapstick comedies, Hal Roach, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harry Langdon, Harold Lloyd, The Keystone Cops. These were short versions, cut to fit a Saturday morning time slot and with voice over by Mr. Norton. He would always introduce the films as a record of his family members, cousins, uncles, brothers, sisters, and describe the predicaments we could see being acted out on camera.
How I loved that show! It made me want to see the complete films, I could tell they had been edited just as Channel...

John Kassir stars as Fallon, one half of the two-headed Giant in the much-anticipated New Line/Warner Brothers feature Jack the Giant Slayer from director Bryan Singer. Kassir who boasts a legendary resume is probably best known for his iconic performance as the voice of The Crypt Keeper in Tales from the Crypt. Born and raised in Baltimore and a graduate of Towson University, Kassir moved to New York where he made his living as a street performer. He auditioned for and eventually won the Star Search competition series as a stand-up comic where he edged out Rosie O’Donnell. Kassir had his own comedic television series for kids Johnnytime where he served as star and executive producer. He starred as Shemp in the ABC television movie The Three Stooges. Other series regular credits include: The Amanda Bynes Show, Encino Man, First and Ten, McBride and more.

There’s a statement made by screenwriter William Goldman about the movie business: ‘Nobody knows nothing.’
Bearing this in mind, here’s a list of ten films in 2012 whose box office returns left a studio decision-makers scratching their heads on their miserable year in order of domestic gross totals.
10. John Carter, $73 million
Buena Vista
The big-budget movie had a disappointing opening weekend, and none of its elements clicked with the public. Despite making a global gross of nearly $283 million, it didn’t even come close to earning $100 milion in the Us alone after a four-month run.
9. Battleship, $65.2 million
Universal
Battleship was no John Carter at the weekend box office, but opened with a miserable $25 million. Starring the same actor, Taylor Kitsch, perhaps one of these movies needed a bigger name. However, it’s best not to rely on Rihanna.
8. The Three Stooges, $44.3 million
Fox

Believe it or not, it's actually a pretty packed week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, maybe not so much in terms of quality but definitely in terms of quantity. Some of the bigger titles out this week include The Farrelly Brothers' The Three Stooges, Lockout starring Guy Pearce, and Mel Gibson's new Dtv flick Get the Gringo, but looking beyond that we also have Will Ferrell's Spanish telenovela parody Casa de mi Padre, Abel Ferrara's 4:44 Last Day on Earth and the star-studded indie comedy Friends With Kids, not to mention Nacho Vigalondo's sci-fi rom-com Extraterrestrial and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Intruders starring Clive Owen. Older flicks debuting on Blu-ray include Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets, Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law and the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We also have 60th Anniversary Editions of Singin' in the Rain and High Noon and a...

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" What's It About? A stuffy fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) is sent on the bizarre mission to bring the sport of fly-fishing to Yemen, all paid for by a sheik. See It Because: This is about as far from your typical rom-com as you can get. A pleasant surprise from beginning to end, the movie is funny, charming and not derivative at all. We also reveled in the comedic performances of Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas. (Also Available on Redbox | Amazon Instant Video) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "Singin' In the Rain" 60th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition What's It About? The beloved Gene Kelly-starring musical concerns a blossoming Hollywood romance between a leading man and a chorus girl, amidst the transition from silent films to "talkie" pictures. The question surrounding Kathryn Bigelow's next film, titled "Kill Bin Laden," is no longer "Will they still make it?" Rather, it's a question of who will star in it, and Joel Edgerton has helped to answer that.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Edgerton has signed on for the film, which chronicles a failed mission to kill the terrorist leader in 2001. In it, he'll reportedly play a special operative that's part of an ensemble of male commandos. But, it's not the only high-profile project the actor's name is attached to.
The La Times also writes that Edgerton is on the short-list of actors considered for "The Hunger Games." (Could he be Haymitch? President Snow?) And while Edgerton is widely in demand, the star isn't saying yes to everything that comes his way. The article also notes that he allegedly turned down the chance to play opposite Kristen Stewart in "Snow White and the Huntsman.

After flexing his box-office muscle in Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson will finally get the chance to show off his dramatic chops in a biopic of legendary black country musician Charley Pride, according to The Playlist. The project was initially set to reunite Terrence Howard with his Hustle and Flow director Craig Brewer before it fell to the wayside, though the attachment of The Rock now has the film back on track. The singer's story is an interesting one, featuring a professional baseball career being interrupted by a stint in the army and of course the racial issues that came with performing in a genre dominated by white performers. I've been waiting for Johnson to take on a serious role like this for quite some time so I can't wait to see what he does with it. It's nice to seem him taking risks apart from the ass-kicker and family-friendly roles...

When Peter and Bobby Farrelly first explored the idea of a Three Stooges movie, they courted Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, and Benicio Del Toro to play Larry, Curly, and Moe. Now, the long-delayed project — which was pushed back in light of MGM’s monetary problems — has an entirely different cast: MadTV’s Will Sasso as Curly, and, as announced last night, Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes as Larry. It’s a tad surprising that the Farrellys would cast TV stars in a film that was intended to be an A-list affair. But! There’s still one more role to cast: Moe.

According to reports, actor Will Sasso ("Mad TV") has been cast as 'Curly Howard' in the developing Twentieth Century Fox "Three Stooges" comedy feature from the Farrelly Brothers ("Dumb And Dumber").
Other actors that previously played Curly include actor Michael Chiklis ("The Shield") in the 2000 TV biopic "The Three Stooges".
Twentieth Century Fox acquired The Farrelly's "Three Stooges" project from MGM. The new film will be directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly from a screenplay they wrote with Mike Cerrone.
"It’s not a biopic," said Peter Farrelly. "It takes place in present day, and they will look, dress and sound exactly like the original Stooges..."
Casting continues for the part of 'Larry Fine', with Andy Samberg ("Saturday Night Live") on the short list, as well as casting for the role of Stooges' leader 'Moe Howard'.

Winona Ryder will always be ahead of the curve when it comes to life. Cool in a way that you can only dream of one day becoming, or at least so she'd like you to believe. This time, in an interview with GQ, Ryder, currently appearing in Black Swan, talks about how fifteen years ago at "one of those big Hollywood parties" (is there any other kind?) Mel Gibson displayed his now famous animosity toward Jews, gays, and all things not Mel Gibson in a (surprise!) drunken rant. While we can only go on Ryder's word, she says that Gibson made "a horrible gay joke" and when he found out that Ryder is Jewish he made a comment about "oven dodgers." He presumably then made the Curly noise from The Three Stooges — "whoop, whoop, whoop." Ryder added [...]...

Mel Gibson and Danny Huston in Edge of Darkness
Photo: Warner Bros. If you were looking for Edge of Darkness to be as entertaining as last year's vengeful father thriller Taken you will be sorely disappointed. Surely that was the goal for Warner Bros. as it aims to take advantage of the exact same release date that earned Taken nearly $150 million at last year's domestic box-office. However, WB shouldn't be on the lookout for a similar return as the "from the director of Casino Royale" tagline and what's left of Mel Gibson's star power is sure to only grant this film a modest opening weekend as word-of-mouth won't be strong.
Written by the same man that turned the Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs" into the Boston area crime drama The Departed, William Monahan, this time, adapts the 1985 BBC miniseries of the same name into another Boston adventure and while...

Everyone's got their niche -- that little slice of the pie that they command -- but it's not often that this niche traverses a wide range of historical icons from almost every part of life. In the beginning one would never have imagined that Kirk Ellis, the man who jumped onto the scene with 1988's Nightmare at Noon, would soon enter the world of biopics, or that he'd get handed the reigns of some doozies.
After a run of easily forgotten fare, Ellis found his niche. He started with a television biopic on The Beach Boys, followed it up with The Three Stooges, Anne Frank, and Judy Garland (the last as producer). There was a bit of a lull after that (besides Into the West), but in 2008, the guy got his big-deal mojo -- that miniseries we all loved called John Adams. Now, it looks like the world is his oyster.
