Not as Blonde as I Thought
zlz_guilty_kitty_zlz5 November 2006
I've been trying to find this for years. My sister doesn't remember it and we used to watch it everyday. No one i know can remember it and looks at me like I'm so blonde I'm imagining things.but I'm not YAY i don't feel so blonde and dumb now. It was a great thing when i was a kid. Cant wait to try n get it on DVD for my kids to watch. I still remember the theme song and sing it in my head when driving down the road. I know that this show wasn't the greatest in the world but it was very entertaining and pretty good for its time. I remember walking up to my sister "bridget" and calling her widget the world watcher and just laugh my butt off at her. When my oldest called her "Aunt Widget" it just brought back all the old memories of watching the show. Now I'm trying to find it!!

Thank God I'm not crazy!!!!!!!!
BreRocks30 August 2002
though not the best cartoon ever, the sheer pursuit of finding anyone else in the world who'd seen it was enough to start a cult following. i seriously almost began to believe that i had imagined the whole thing. everyday before school i'd watch it. it used to come on right before Captain Planet. when both shows ended i knew it was time to go to school. where did this show go and why doesn't anyone else remember it?

I found a VHS!
carina-bedford25 May 2008
I used to watch this show when I was a kid as well. I am now 23.

I was at work about 1 year ago and I caught out of the corner of my eye, HIGH UP on top of a book cabinet the side of a VHS jacket/box which said "WIDGETS GREAT WHALE ADVENTURE and THE GREAT BRAIN ROBBERY".

I blinked a few times in disbelief that this video was even at my work let alone abandoned, covered in dust and just sitting there.

Well, I left this work place about 3 months ago to move interstate and I asked my boss what was with the video on the top of the cabinet. She had no idea - so, I asked her if i could have it, because it was a favorite of mine when I was a kid.

SHE SAID YES! Although it's so not my thing anymore seeing as I'm 23 - at least I can say I have two episodes on VHS, absolutely brand spanking new and in great condition - might show the kids one day when I have some haha

Obliviate!
archipelligo_the_llama20 August 2006
I have only met one other person in my entire life who remembers this show. Even my brother (who watched it with me) doesn't remember it. Thus, it has become obvious that someone doesn't want us to remember it and is slowly doing away with all those who do. So me making a public comment about my memories of it probably isn't a good idea, but I'll take my chances (plus, I'm taking Tom down with me).

So why the hell do I need ten lines of text? So that they have more opportunity to figure out who I am and modify my memory? Alright, this is what I know- purple octopus looking guy. Wore watch. Guy with big brain came out of it. Very colorful. Stupid kids who I didn't like. Up there with Captain Planet. There. 11 lines. OBLIVIATE!

And now they won't let me spell color with a 'u'! I'm Australian!!

And no 'SHOUTING' in summary. Tough crowd.

An obscure cartoon, but one that at least some remember fondly
Beta_Gallinger28 October 2007
I was eight years old when I first saw this cartoon, and think I was ten when I last saw it. I'm 21 now, so it's been a while, but about three years ago, while looking through the credits of voice actor Jim Cummings on IMDb, I came across "Widget, the World Watcher", which brought back memories! As a Canadian, the only station I ever saw this show on was TVO, and if it wasn't aired on that station, I would have never heard of it, but they did air it, and I liked it a lot!

Widget was a little purple shape-shifting alien who lived in a cave on Earth, and was known as a "World Watcher". Each episode would show him on a mission to fight evil and pollution, and help protect the planet, whether it was aliens or humans causing the trouble! To help him on his missions, there was the intelligent but goofy MegaBrain, a being with only a floating head and a pair of hands. The top of MegaBrain's head was see-through, so you could see his brain. Also accompanying Widget on his missions were two young Earthling brothers named Brian and Kevin.

This show could entertain kids with its exciting adventures, interesting characters, humour, etc. From what I remember, most of the humour was provided by MegaBrain, a very funny character. The show also had a catchy theme song, one which I recently got to hear again on Youtube. Unfortunately, it appears the cartoon was always pretty obscure, and at one point back in elementary school, I remember some of my peers were familiar with it, but I don't think too many of them were. I guess episodes of "Widget, the World Watcher" are very rare now, and I doubt it will ever be shown of TV again, but at least some people who were kids in the '90s still have fond memories of it, including me.

A GOOD enviromental show that is not from Japan or Canada.
Akiosan10 March 2003
"Widget" was one of the better enviromental shows they played down here on Rede Globo de Televisão [RGDT] that was not from Japan nor Canada. Most of the US or Latino stuff played was too preachy or it talked down to young audiences. However, Widget (US/Philipine co-production) fit neither of those stereotypes.

The plot focuses around shapeshifting alien (title character) and his race, plus, a talking brain robot and psychic kids noticing the disasters that takes place on Earth and Widget's homeworld, so they must try to enlighten the ignorant and punish the wrong-doing aliens that cannot survive on earth and pollute it with their own chemicals or introduce foreign species to interfere with Earth.

From some sources I have heard, this cartoon was made, due to the fact of the high pollution rate in the Philipines (or at least Manilla anyways), so Pinay animations and various Philipina and America companies decided to come up with this concept.

Dude, Why has Widget been forgotten?
JDLPinDixon1 September 2005
As a college student, conversations concerning old cartoons constantly come up. They bind us all together. It always starts with Ninja Turtles, then some Ducktales, classics like Thundercats and Transformers. But when we start delving into more obscure cartoons that we all loved, we all get really excited. Eek the Cat, that show that was on after Garfield, and of course, Captain Planet. I always surreptitiously bring up Widget the World Watcher and always I get blank stares, even after I describe the show and sing the theme song. I liked Widget way more than captain planet and they were usually on back to back. Now Captain Planet is fondly remembered and widget is completely forgotten. Why? BTW- my favorite episode was the one where everyone was lured into a mini-mall with no exits and they were all trapped in a consumerist lifestyle with no way out. Considering most cartoons go hand in hand with consumerist culture (duh, they're on TV,) I think it's pretty cool that this cartoon existed. I agree with the other guy who posted here, Widget is awesome. (And I too began to question whether I made Widget up.)

Where'd it go?
ztonus10 February 2002
Every morning, if I got up early enough, like 4 or 5 a.m, I would find "Widget: the World Watcher." Many would say it wasn't the best, but it was cool enough to get up for.

Anybody that hasn't ever seen this, here's the scoop: This alien comes to earth dedicated to protect the planet. He's purple, he can morph, and can even talk to animals. His pals? Two earth brothers and a overactive head and hands called MegaBrain that lives in a watch on Widget's wrist.

Imagine my shock getting up from bed and discovering that this show's gone. WHERE'D IT GO??!!

I too thought I was Crazy
K11lynn15 April 2004
Amazing, I been asking people over the years, "do you remember Widget?" and the reply is always no, but I sure do, and because everyone I've asked said no, I also thought I made up the show. I enjoyed the show a great deal, it started my day off right, so I know how you feel, I would watch the show if I could, for sure! I loved IT!!!!

If they had it on TV, I'd introduce it to my children, and watch it with them for sure.

It was a great show! This is my opinon though.

If you come accross a tape, let me know, I would love to have a copy.

OK, this is so weird, so i'm 24 years old and i use to watch this cartoon also when i was young. i ask all my friends all the time and they say, what was that? i've been looking for it for a long time and i found it on this website. it was a pretty good show. well just wanted to share my little piece of history. oh and by the way i didn't know you had to write 10 or more freakin lines on this website in order to have your comment posted. well there are also quite a few more cartoons that i remember that i wish would still come on. the new cartoons on TV are so dumb and they are making everything too digital. go back to drawing cartoons, they were funnier and better.

It's all true!!!!!
frost_my_socks20 April 2006
OMG! I've got the best story about our dear friend Widget! When I was young, I did jazz ballet classes. I went a few times, but every time, half way through the class, I'd ask the teacher the time. When it reached a certain time, I said I needed to go to the toilet. I grabbed my things and ran the 30 second run home, made a peanut butter and jam sandwich, a glass of milk, and sat down to enjoy my Widget the Worldwatcher, and Captain Planet! This went on for 3 weeks until they found out, and canceled my jazz ballet classes (thank god!). I was addicted to those two shows! I was their number 1 fan, and a number 2 fan of SuperTed!(oh, please help me, I almost forgot its name!!!) the show with the teddy bear that was unwanted and became a superhero because mother nature gave him super powers! So, anyway. I do remember both shows, along with superted (does anyone else remember my furry friend?), and just wonder if this will get any replies? You're not crazy. Widget and Cptn P. were the spunkiest spunks around! ~h~

Green by colour and green by nature.
Victor Field23 January 2003
"Widget, the World Watcher" was similar to "Captain Planet" in that both revolved around supernaturally-gifted people... okay, creatures in this case... battling to rescue the earth from environmental catastrophe. This didn't have any Ted Turner backing or name stars doing voices - although I doubt Tom Cruise would have been as good a voice actor as Rob Paulsen - but it was less pretentious, less politically correct in its characters (face it, apart from Wheeler none of the Planeteers were renowned for their looseness) and ultimately more watchable. Plus it did have a sense of humour absent from the good Captain.

The "Awesome!" lingo spouted by Widget really grated, as if the producers were trying too hard to appeal to its audience, but as far as cartoons aired by Channel 4 in the early 1990s went, there were far worse offenders (case in point the American-Dutch cartoon "The Bluffers," which is so (rightly) obscure it isn't even listed on the IMDb). Forget "RI:SE," bring back the Banana Splits and "The Adventures of T-Rex" I say...
