Singer Milizia Korjus has her fans, yet the only film role she is usually remembered for is the immensely popular 1938 Hollywood musical The Great Waltz. Here is one she made four years later in Mexico.
Director Miguel Contreras Torres had worked in silents and was known for his patriotic themes so there are some decent battle scenes involving the Juarez movement and some singing peasants. The romantic plot complications are a bit hard to follow, and it is unfair to judge the photography by veteran Alex Phillips from the poor copy I viewed. But for those interested in Mexican film history and especially for the opera buffs (Korjus does Casta Diva and an excerpt from Lucia Di Lammermoor among others) it is worth hunting down.
