Seeing it's a good idea
hte-trasme4 December 2009
I have seen the surviving six-minute-or-so version of the film available on DVD and sourced from 9.5 mm film; if you have have access to the complete ten-minute reel, contact a film archive!

Charley Chase developed and honed the character and comic structure with which he would successfully delight for the rest of his life in his early "Jimmy Jump" films for Hal Roach, each contained on only a reel "Seeing Nellie Home" shows that his ability to fit his comic vision within that timeframe is becoming really expert. The situation is typically embarrassing and unlikely-but-possible for Charley, but it is at the same time such a simple idea -- Charley shows off by taking a pretty girl back home, wreaks havoc trying to get her in, then discovers that she's married -- is so simple that even at such a sort length nothing has to be crammed in, and there is room for elaboration on the concept with a number of clever gags and shots once Charley begins his attempt to infiltrate his companion's house after discovering she has forgotten her key.

It's a slight piece -- especially in its existing form -- but it contains good laughs and really demonstrates Charkey Chase's peculiar genius for manipulating comic structure and drawing laughs from character in a matter of seconds.

Rather funny despite being only a fragment.

Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately, this film is mostly lost--with only a five minute portion remaining. But, the collection "Becoming Charley Chase" tries to include EVERYTHING--so several fragmented film are included.

Charley escorts his date home. However, her door is locked and she can't get in--so Charley agrees to climb a ladder to the upstairs window. He gets in but naturally things DON'T go well--Charley makes a mess of the house and makes a lot of noise--only to discover the door was unlocked all the time. Then he also learns that she is already married--and the husband is on his way inside! So, it's up to Charley to try to make his getaway as best he can. But the husband has a gun and is none too pleased about this. When the police come, they actually help the husband and help him look for this interloper.

While it's only a fragment, the ending is funny and there are a few really good moments. Worth seeing.

Seeing Nellie Home (1924)

(Fragment only)

Sadly this Jimmy Jump (Charley Chase) entry is incomplete as only six-minutes of the ten-minutes are still available. The available footage is from a 9.5 mm print so the quality is pretty bad as well. The story centers around Jimmy being the perfect gentleman by walking a pretty lady to her door but what he doesn't know is that she's married and her husband carries a gun. I'm not exactly sure what all is missing from this short but what remains is pretty entertaining and I might call it my second favorite from the series. What jokes are here work extremely well including a pretty smart one where Jimmy's car tire knocks the sewer cover off and when he goes to get out of his car he nearly falls down the hole. This hole will play a part in another joke as well. Once inside the house is when the real fun starts as Jimmy tries to make it downstairs without making a noise but this doesn't happen as he gets into one mess after another. Hopefully at some point the missing three-minutes will be found as this is still worth seeing in its cut form.
