Always listen to what your wife tells you to do!
LeRoyMarko1 January 2005
Poor Ralph fails to clear his snow obstructed porch. He leaves the house, comes back and finds the mailman dead at his door. The poor fellow fell on the ice. What to do with the body? But his wife has a secret of her own. This short film may be just 7 minutes long, but there's a lot happening! If Hitchcock had ventured into cartoons, he might have made one like this. Oh! and there's actually nudity in this one! Can't go wrong with this short film. Another great product from the National Film Board of Canada.

Seen at home, in Toronto, on January 1st, 2005.

Amazingly dark!
planktonrules13 February 2008
For what seems like the one millionth time, the National Film Board of Canada produced a cartoon that was either nominated for or won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. It seems like this government agency long sponsored and encouraged short films and I only recently discovered these gems. While I am sure there are some losers among them, I have been rather consistently impressed by the work--particularly the ultra-strange film THE BIG SNIT.

Here with SPECIAL DELIVERY is another ultra-strange and dark film. A man accidentally kills a postal worker and this oddly sets off a series of very unusual events--many of which are way too depressing to be seen in traditional animation. This, combined with the irreverent sense of humor make for a very enjoyable film.

By the way, there is a NAKED ANIMATION ALERT!! You'll see a tad of male frontal nudity here, but since the animation isn't the most realistic style, most probably will not be particularly offended.

Special Delivery
CinemaSerf2 April 2024
"Alice" heads off to her judo class leaving husband "Ralph" with one instruction - clear the snow from the path! He forgot! When he returns home he finds an uniformed corpse at his front door. It's the mailman - and he's clearly slipped on the ice and will post no more. Bundled into the house by a panic-stricken "Ralph", he must now think of a plan to get shot of the body before he ends up on the wrong end of a costly lawsuit. Firstly, though, he decides to finish of the man's delivery round so suspicion wouldn't fall on his home, but he leaves his keys in the wrong trousers, gets apprehended by the police trying to break into his own house and that leaves the unsuspecting "Alice" to come home to a forced window, a naked postie and an half drunk bottle of Scotch. Turns out she had romantic history with the postman - so now it is her who must find a way of disposing of the body! It's only then she realises that he's not just passed out, but deceased. Did "Ralph" do it? She flees and when he returns from his trip to the cop shop, he sees there's no longer a body (or a wife) so decides it's best to just forget all about it and sit by the fire... I did quite enjoy the black humour here and the daftness of the last two minutes with police and coroner deciding that convenience was the better part of valour. The simple, snowy, animation is effective and Sandy Sanderson's narration keeps his tongue well in his cheek.

Canadians have a way of twisting noir into humorous shapes.

This one does so both in the story, and more importantly in the way the world is drawn.

The story is an amazingly clever and entertaining journey of right turns. Its more noir than noir and the jags in the story are so extreme they're really funny.

But what makes this valuable is the way that the world, as drawn, complements this. As scenes change, parts of the world melt into and grow from each other. It is itself a series of unexpected causal linkages. See it. Its good.

Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.

Feels like an urban legend Warning: Spoilers
The plot feels like an urban legend, and I even thought it was based in one of those kind of tales when I watched this short by the first time: Not only for immense amount of extraordinary coincidences, but also for the way in which the characters act, often in the least logical manner anyone can imagine: Why Alice never noticed the mailman was dead until she left him on his bed? How can any doctor believe a person can break his neck just by having a nightmare of being hanged? Why the mailman wasn't wearing any underwear? (Maybe going commando was a common thing in Canada during the 70s, who knows)

Still, this was an amusing watch, even if the story is completely non-sensical.

Thoroughly and delightfully bizarre
llltdesq24 October 2001
This short, which won a well deserved Academy Award, has got to be one of the most delightfully twisted cartoons I have seen in my life! Through a series of twists and turns so odd that it seems like a combination of Kafka and Hitchcock, we follow three people-a husband, his wife and the mailman-through a most eventful day for them all. It changes their lives most completely. Black humor runs throughout this absolute gem and it is delightfully funny! Though I wonder if the Canadian Postal union feels the same about this one! Most recommended!

Animated short Special Delivery contains one hilarious twist after another!
tavm28 July 2008
Just discovered on Thad's Animation Blog this weirdly funny Oscar-winning short directed by Eunice Macaulay and John Weldon. It seems Alice is going out and tells husband Ralph to shovel the walk before he goes to work. He doesn't and when he returns home, he finds the mailman lying dead on the icy pathway. What Ralph does afterwards and the consequences that result changes all three lives (well, two of them anyway) forever...With the exception of the organ music and the narrator who delivers his lines in the same monotone style throughout, this animated short is silent. Despite the brief running time, Special Delivery has so much going on that every twist the narrator tells and the animators show us earns more laughs than the one before. The only other thing I have to say is I'm so glad I live in a place where it doesn't snow. (though occasionally there have been exceptions...)

Hilarious

This is a convoluted story of the dominos falling when a man refuses to shovel his walkway and the mailman falls and breaks his neck. The clever series of events are fantastic when viewed in the world presented here. It shows how people can jump to conclusions when they fail investigate what is presented to them. Good animation and a neat story.

Excellent animated short
Tito-814 November 2000
This gem of an animated short shows us what can go wrong when you forget to clear the snow and ice off of your stairs. A funny, nicely animated, wonderfully narrated short, and it's easy to see why it won an Oscar. A typically outstanding feature from Canada's National Film Board.

amusing story, bland execution
MephitisLotor28 August 2004
Despite a darkly-humorous story and some moderately stylish (if unpolished) animation, 'Special Delivery' has yet to leave much of an impression on me. The main reason is something that's been praised in other comments on this site, the narration: it's so flat and descriptive that it undercuts, rather than enhances, the animation, and yet it's really unnecessary, supplying almost no information that isn't obvious in the animation itself. The character design, staging, and action are all competent, but add nothing to the story. The result is a cartoon which could just as easily have been a live-action short film, or even a short story, without losing anything.

Hey Mephitus of Fancy Gap! Seems the Academy thought it wasn't as "bland" and "unpolished" as you, it only WON an Academy Award. You were expecting Fantasia? The understated narration coupled with the simplistic yet flowing animation adds to the charm of the film. The lengthy exposition you find flat and unnecessary is absolutely hilarious to me. I suspect you might not appreciate many of the award-winning NFB animations over the years. You best stick with Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera. Why does IMDb insist I need more lines to post this? Makes not a lick of sense, especially since most posts are shorter than this one.

This is a good story.

It is, however, entirely told by a narrator; rather blandly indeed, but it still makes for a pleasant listening.

The art is classically quite good, yet I have one issue with the entire thing: it doesn't add anything to the narration. In a way, it misses the point of being an animated film. To me, the pictures should come first, and if possible be self-sufficient.

I don't think that the opposite is true, that Special Delivery can tell its story without the narrator. To verify, I'd have to wait until I forget the events, and watch it without the sound, which is not going to happen.

Anyway, there's this flaw in the execution, but it doesn't make it bad in the least. It's a good tale, told with an average delivery instead of the expected special one.
