You could be forgiven for tuning in to Sunday night’s CMT Music Awards in Austin, Texas, and having the sensation that you’d stepped through a time portal into a mid-1990s VMAs or a mid-2000s CMAs, or a smoked-out arena in 1970s Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Because the annual fan-voted awards show, now filling the April slot of country music’s numerous major awards events, managed to visit all of those moments and still found a little time to zero in on what’s happening right now.

Olivia Newton-John died on August 8 at age 73 after a battle with breast cancer.
The British born Australian star shot to fame in “Grease” opposite John Travolta in 1978. A four-time Grammy winner, Newton-John won Record of the Year for “I Honestly Love You” and “Physical,” as well as “Grease” song “You’re the One That I Want,” which still ranks as one of the bestselling singles of all time.
Newton-John’s husband John Easterling confirmed her passing on Facebook.
“Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” Easterling wrote. “We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

In the earliest stages of Covid lockdown, Leslie Jordan was visiting his family in Tennessee and rented a condo in downtown Chattanooga. During that first month or so of isolation and distancing, the television star and comedian started to go a little stir crazy. He filmed himself talking and posted the video to Instagram.
“It’s still March. How many days in March? When is April fuckin’ gonna get here?” he moaned, laying on one side with his head pressed into a pillow. “My mother hollerin’ up the steps, asking...

Following on from a July where they added a large number of horror titles to their catalogue, Hulu have now made available even more great outings from the genre. As with all the major streaming players, keeping subscribers happy with new content during this Covid-19 year has been crucial, especially given the new competitors that have sprung up in recent months, further splintering film rights. Hulu are usually pretty reliable in terms of diversity, though, and have added some particularly strong horror titles for August.
Among the highlights for new movies is the original 1988 Child’s Play, which introduced the murderous Chucky to the world in a film that arguably remains the high-point of the franchise. A reasonably realistic setting, a convincing child performance and some excellent effects work make Child’s Play a classic of the period and more than worth a rewatch. And with the Chucky series on the way,...

We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

Character actor William Phipps, who starred in sci fi films of the 1950s and voiced Prince Charming in 1950’s “Cinderella,” died Friday, June 1 at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 96.
Phipps’ friend and entertainment industry author Tom Weaver announced the news, adding that Phipps had been battling lung cancer, which was complicated by pneumonia.
Phipps was born in Vincennes, Ind., on Feb. 4, 1922. In 1939, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill., where he studied accounting and planned to pursue it as a career while continuing what was then an acting hobby on the side.
In 1941, Phipps decided to forgo his Eiu studies and moved to California to pursue his acting dream. He later enlisted in the Navy after his brother Jack was shot down over the South Pacific, serving as a radioman aboard six ships between 1942 and 1945. After his discharge, he returned to Hollywood and used the G.

Diehard fans will most appreciate Del Shores’ belated sequel to Sordid Lives, his 2000 indie hit comedy about the entwined lives of numerous colorful characters, several of them gay, in the Bible Belt town of Winters, Texas. Featuring many of the original castmembers as well as newcomers in several key roles, this installment delivers much of the same brand of raucous, gay-themed humor that propelled its predecessor to surprising success. It’s also following in the footsteps of the first film, which enjoyed a run of nearly two years in a Palm Springs theater; in the same location, A Very Sordid...

One year ago, the post-Oscar specialized rebound began with the release of “Eye in the Sky” and “Hello, My Name Is Doris.” Each opened with per-theater averages over $20,000; then, with support from older audiences all across the country, made $19 million and $14 million, respectively.
This year it’s “Personal Shopper,” with the French film starring Kristen Stewart showing unexpected interest. “Raw” (Focus) and “A Sense of the Ending” (Lionsgate) also managed PTAs over $10,000, indicating some chance for future success.
Ahead of any other new release in PTA was a single theater, premiere-event boosted initial date for “A Very Sordid Wedding” in Palm Springs. This week also saw the very limited opening of “Burning Sands,” the second film in the Sundance 2017 U.S. dramatic competition to find its home on Netflix. In late 1999, I was walking down Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks with my late producing partner Sharyn Lane after a day of editing Sordid Lives. We passed the Psychic Book Store and decided to go in and get a reading. We weren’t believers, but what the hell? We needed a sign. Something. We had just taken a big risk, had shot one of the first Hi-Def movies for about $500,000 (we raised from mainly friends with money) and quite frankly, we really didn’t know what the hell we were doing. I came from the theatre which had given me opportunities in television as well as a film adaptation of my second

Sissies Willam Belli, Matthew Scott Montgomery, Luke Stratte McClure & Emerson Collins
Religion and homosexuality have always had a tough relationship and leave it to Del Shores to address the issue head-on in the film version of his renowned play, Southern Baptist Sissies.
Like the play, which has been staged countless times since Shores wrote it in 2000, the film takes a look at four young boys – all Southern Baptists – and their journeys into adulthood and sexuality, with their parents, God and the Church watching closely over them to stop any missteps. While Sissies is filled with great laughs and musical performances, there’s a heavy dramatic message here, too, that unfortunately still applies in 2014.

Exclusive: The case of Los Angeles’ notorious “Grim Sleeper” serial killer is getting a TV movie treatment with Lifetime‘s The Grim Sleeper starring Dreama Walker (Don’t Trust The B—-) and co-starring actress-singer Macy Gray (Training Day), Ernie Hudson (Call Me Crazy), and Michael O’Neill (Dallas Buyers Club). It will be directed by Stanley M. Brooks in the veteran TV movie producer’s return to the genre. In 2010, Brooks left the TV movie business after 21 years when he filed for bankruptcy as a result of a dispute with AFTRA, WGA and DGA over residuals from the Logo series Sordid Lives. Since then, he quietly took on a new career as a director with horror indie Perfect Sisters, which is awaiting release. It is fitting that Brooks’ return to the TV movie business is via Lifetime where he was a top telefilm supplier until severing ties with the...

FX has already cast Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, and Colin Hanks into the cold for its Fargo series, but the show based on the Coen brothers’ film is really filling up its cast, as there are slightly more than three people in the North Dakota/Minnesota area. Indeed, there are at least 11 more, as the network has announced the addition of Bob Odenkirk as Deputy Bill Olson of Bemidji, Mn; Sordid Lives’ Allison Tolman as his “younger, smarter, more ambitious” fellow deputy; Oliver Platt as “Stavros Milos, the Supermarket King of Minnesota;” Private Practice’s Kate Walsh as ...

If you followed @afterellen's Golden Globes tweet-along at #showusyourglobes, you know that this year was almost as full of Gay Goodness as last year, even though we expected the awards to straighten up.
But we also expected Ricky Gervais not to be invited back, so what do we know?
Before we proceed with a recap of the festivities, I must put to rest any and all rumors about why I am doing this recap when awards shows are Dorothy Snarker territory. Ms. Snarker, faced with the choice of staying up all night writing about the Golden Globes or staying up all night partying in Vegas with lesbian softball players, chose the latter. I know, I know. But we will get through this together. On with the show.

I can't help but think that in some hands, a review of Hugh Jackman's Broadway show that contains lines like "Let’s face it. Mr. Jackman is, unapologetically and triumphantly, the bi-est guy in town: bicultural, bimorphic, binational, biprofessional and, for entertainment purposes, bisexual" would have been considered offensive.

Web Series: Trailer Made
For fans of...: Sex And The City; Sordid Lives; The Jerry Springer Show; John Waters
What it is: Follow a gaggle of Southern girls as they liven-up their trailer park with parties, misadventures, and gossip.
What's good: Good job squeezing as much comedic juice out of each character without (quite) resorting to caricature. Objectively, these women are really rather awful, and yet somehow, we sorta want to be their friends.
What's great: It's a very funny show with a spirited and invested cast. It's filmed on (gritty) location, and the actresses are talented locals; add the fast, dextrous pacing and, hilariously, absurd situations somehow seem all too real.
What could be better: For the biggest audience impact, four friends seems to be the magic number (The Golden Girls; Seinfeld; Sex And The City and so on)--and the web series genre requires discipline and focus regardless of the set-up.

The cast of Stephan Elliott’s A Few Best Men will include Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall, Kevin Bishop and Olivia Newton-John as the mother of the bride.
“I’m thrilled Olivia Newton-John is part of the cast; Dean Craig has written a fantastically entertaining script, and it’s especially exciting to partner Stephan Elliott with Olivia who is a true music and film icon. Olivia will be playing a role that will show her in a light she’s never been seen before and it’s going to turn heads and win new fans,” said producer Gary Hamilton.
It will be Newton-John’s first Australian film since 1965′s Funny Things Happen Down Under, and her first film since the American independent release Sordid Lives in 2000. One of her latest TV appearances was in the hit show Glee.

Update 5:30 Pm: After producer Stanley M. Brooks and AFTRA couldn't reach a settlement over residual payments stemming from the Logo series Sordid Lives, Brooks' Once Upon a Time has filed for bankruptcy. It follows a last-ditch effort by Brooks who on friday sent AFTRA, WGA, DGA and Mpi a "final" $500,000 settlement offer. "It is with tremendous sadness and regret that we announce that Once Upon A Time Films has been forced to follow the path of other respected companies affected by the Axium collapse and seek relief under the insolvency laws, which we have done this afternoon," the company said in a statement. "After lengthy negotiations all weekend and with many extended deadlines, at noon today it became clear that a deal was not attainable. All of us at Once Upon A Time are proud of our 21 years of making award-winning movies and telling stories - and thank every cast,...

But I try and think of the most vulnerable person and how it will affect them – the gay man in a small village, where all the people are in the pub are laughing at it. What message is it going to send to him?’" That speaks to some recent discussions we’ve had around here.

AFTRA on Sunday tendered a counterproposal to Stanley Brooks' take-it-or-leave-it offer to settle unpaid residuals on the 2008 Logo TV series "Sordid Lives."
The move comes in the face of a threat by Brooks that if his offer isn't accepted, he almost immediately will file for bankruptcy on behalf of his main company, Once Upon a Time Films, and Sordid Lives Prods., a special-purpose company formed for the show.
Brooks said Friday in a passionate letter to performers owed money that if he files bankruptcy, creditors will get even less than the $500,000 he is offering to settle about $1.5 million in debt.
AFTRA held meetings and conference calls Friday and during the weekend to discuss the offer. Among the actors in the production are Bonnie Bedelia; the late Rue McClanahan, who is represented by her estate; and Anne Walker, who was seen in a YouTube video confronting Brooks about the unpaid...

Residuals Wars: Stan Brooks Sends 'Final' Settlement Offer to AFTRA, WGA, DGA & Mpi Monday Am Update: Stanley M. Brooks' company Once Upon a Time Films issued a statement confirming a new extension to the settlement deadline: "With progress made over the weekend, at the request of the combined Guilds, Once Upon A Time Films has agreed to extend the deadline for their filing to 12pm today and in the hopes that a settlement can be reached." Previous Sunday 1 Pm: Shortly before today's noon deadline on producer Stanley M. Brooks' $500,000 settlement proposal to AFTRA, WGA, DGA and Mpi, AFTRA sent Brooks a counter-proposal. AFTRA's members are owed the lion's share of residuals from the Brooks-produced Logo series Sordid Lives that sparked the spat. I hear Brooks' final offer was unconditional and was to include potential revenue he would receive from DVD sales of the 2008 series as well as any...

Update 6:00 Pm: Another wrinkle in the residuals war between producer Stanley M. Brooks and the guilds over the 2008 Logo series Sordid Lives. After the two sides appeared headed to an extension on Brooks' final proposal until Wednesday 5:30 Pm, Brooks' Once Upon a Time just issued a statement giving the other side only until Sunday at noon to respond. I hear that, while accepting a standstill agreement, the guilds wanted to exclude Brooks' court date with the WGA, which led to him moving up the deadline from Wednesday to Sunday. Once Upon A Time appreciates the response from AFTRA, the other unions and Mpi and is happy to extend the deadline until this Sunday at noon. All sides have had many months to review the issues and numbers, so we are confident that if a settlement can be reached, this is plenty of time to make that determination. We...

AFTRA on Friday told producer Stanley Brooks they needed more time to consider is sweetened offer to settle outstanding claims from the 2008 Logo TV show "Sordid Lives," and attorneys for Brooks have agreed to hold off until Sunday at noon on filing for the bankruptcy of two of Brooks' companies.
Brooks sent AFTRA a letter early Friday with a passionate defense of his position and a history of his company and his financial troubles which he said stem from the bankruptcy of Axium payroll service during the making of the series, which he said cost his company $700,000.
Brooks noted in the letter he had paid all the original salaries and production costs and that the money he owed was from residuals, and penalties added after he failed to make certain payments. He gave the guilds until 5 p.m. Friday to accept his offer, or he said he would put his...

AFTRA has refused a demand from producer Stanley Brooks to remove his company from the guild's "Do Not Work List" over unpaid residuals and fees from the 2008 Logo TV series "Sordid Lives."
AFTRA also filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court Aug. 30 to confirm an arbitration award against Brooks for $1.2 million, with a hearing set for Oct. 22.

An attorney for Stanley Brooks has sent letters to AFTRA and the WGA West demanding that they remove his client, who was executive producer of the Logo series "Sordid Lives" and other series and TV movies, from their "Do Not Work List." The letter demands that the guilds stop telling their members not to do business with Brooks or his company Once Upon a Time Films.
The letter was sent Monday by Arnold Peter of the law firm Peter, Rubin & Simon to attorneys for the two guilds.

Executive producer Stanley M. Brooks of Once Upon a Time Films did not attend an AFTRA arbitration hearing Tuesday concerning more than $1 million owed from a 2008 Logo TV series but was represented by an attorney who acknowledged that there were unpaid residual payments, according to Del Shores, who was creator and director of the show in question, "Sordid Lives: The Series."
"I went to the AFTRA arbitration today to be a witness for AFTRA," Shores said in a statement to THR after the hearing. "I was not called upon to testify. My understanding is that Stan Brooks and Once Upon a Time Films agreed that they owed the actors of 'Sordid Lives: The Series' somewhere around $1.1 million in unpaid residuals and requested to meet with all three guilds involved -- WGA, DGA and AFTRA -- to try to come to a settlement for the artists owed, including myself.

Rue McClanahan (center) with co-stars Bea Arthur and Betty White
The woman who so famously brought Golden Girls' Blanche Deveraux to life has passed away at the age of 76.
According to a statement from her manager, the actress died of a "massive stroke" at 1:00 Am this morning. McClanahan had been in ill health since suffering a minor stroke earlier this year. Fortunately she had family with her at the time of her passing and "went in peace."
Rue McClanahan worked in theater both on and off-Broadway before scoring wider TV exposure first on the the daytime soap opera Another World, and then playing "Vivian," best friend to Bea Arthur's title character on Maude.
She was married six times and is survived by actor Morrow Wilson (whom she married in 1997) and her son from a previous marriage, Mark Bish.
Rue's last acting role was actually on the Logo channel.

A giant pastel flash mob can change a person. Trust. I would know as I spent my Sunday this past week experiencing the New York Easter Parade with none other than Leslie Jordan.

You may recognize Mr. Jordan from TV shows such as Will & Grace and the legendary Sordid Lives. He now has a new one-man show opening on April 14th called My Trip Down The Pink Carpet. The show is based on his recently published memoirs, and, if it’s at all as entertaining as his Easter outfit, it’s bound to be an enjoyable evening.
Mr. Jordan sneaked away from me before I could get him to join the Club, but no worries Drama Club Members. Like a flamboyant little Easter Egg, we eventually found him.
Enjoy!

Some of you may have noticed that any articles that have slipped off the front page now have moderated comments. I was forced to do this by huge waves of spam hitting my blog -- it's getting worse all the time actually, dozens of spam comments to be weeded out every day. But I'm delighted that people still comment on older articles. Two recent comments I wanted to draw attention to:
anonymous (sign your names people, it takes all of 1.5 seconds) on the casting of the August: Osage County movieYou know Doris Day has been itching to come back to do a film....and what a way of coming back to movies...also Im surprised no one has mentioned Beth Grant (from Sordid Lives) or even Delta Burke I can't imagine that Doris Day wants to work again. A Doris Day return would be an event regardless of the vehicle.

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).
There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.
This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!
How does this list compare to our previous poll?...

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Is the opossum couple Crash and Eddie in the Ice Age movies The Meltdown and Dawn of the Dinosaurs gay? I swear they have very, very good chemistry together! – Warren, Toronto, Ontario
A: Well, Crash and Eddie are fraternal twin brothers, which explains their chemistry. So while one or both might be gay, they’re almost certainly not a couple.
That said, they’re voiced by Seann William Scott and Josh Peck, so I’m sure many readers wish they were a couple!

Q: I recently heard rumors that NBC is getting ready to debut a spin-off to Will & Grace called Karen & Jack, set to star Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes, in the fall of this year. Is there any truth to this rumor?...

For many gay and bisexual men of a certain age, the first inkling that they weren’t like other boys came on Saturday mornings from 1974 to 1976, in the form of a television show called The Land of the Lost. The show, about a father and his two children who were stranded in a mysterious land of dinosaurs, also featured vicious, but curiously slow-moving reptilian humanoids called Sleestak. Now the classic kids’ program by Sid and Marty Krofft, the producers of H.R. Pufnstuf and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, has even been made into a feature film starring Will Ferrell, opening this Friday.
But it wasn’t just the gloriously campy-even-at-the-time nature of the show itself that appealed to gay boys. It was also the fact that it featured the role of Will, the Marshall’s handsome teenage son, played by an actor billed only as “Wesley,” but whose full name is Wesley Eure.
