D & P's best.
bradjanet9 November 2007
The saddest, best scripted and best acted offering in the "Dalziel and Pascoe" saga sees the two detectives investigating a long buried mystery which resonates tragically in the present ...a fine series at the top of its form, before it became top heavy when Warren Clarke became executive producer and excellent characters like Sgt. Wield were dropped in favour of more concentration on the Dalziel character.

The two Reginald Hill "D & P" novels that are crying out for a production, but which were strangely overlooked, were"Arms and the Woman", (possibly because the plot centres on Ellie, Pascoe's wife) and "Pictures of Perfection", (possibly because it concentrates on the character of Sgt. Wield ... also because it's a character piece where nothing much happens. It is my favourite of Hill's highly entertaining books).

True northern grit

Warning: Spoilers
A strong cast in this one as the show has now firmly found its feet.

The storyline is quite interesting and the gritty northern drama and breathtaking views make for a good watch too.

Less sarcasm from Dalziel in this one with more emphasis on emotion.

The familiar faces can be off-putting, leaving you wondering where else you may have seen them but their experience gives the show more gravitas through the slower segments.

A very powerful storyline, another great episode.

Eight years ago, a child named Mary vanished from Dendale, at the same time Benny, an outcast also disappeared, the community believed he was responsible, and the matter was layed to rest, until another little girl disappears at the same place.

I've just finished reading this very book, and I recommend it highly, it's a great book, the way it details thr community of Dendale, and its past is fantastic. It's bleak and the story of the missing children is particularly nasty.

This production is very hard to fault, the book is wonderfully brought to life in this adaptation. Great visuals, wonderful performances as always, and a particularly good story for The Pascoe family, poor Rosie's plight is very well realised.

The conclusion is great, that moment where Andy explains all, it's wonderfully Agatha Christie.

Great cast, particularly good performances from Ronald Pickup, Joanna David and Kaye Wragg.

Another excellent episode from this great series.

9/10.
