It’s hard to believe that eight years have passed since the first Wolf Creek movie came out and we were introduced to the instantly iconic Mick Taylor. The bastard son of Freddy Krueger and Mick ‘Crocodile’ Dundee, Taylor came roaring onto our screens as the course, uncouth but endearingly charming Aussie uncle that we never had, albeit the one that gets his kicks kidnapping and torturing unfortunate backpackers.
Writer and director Greg McClean’s first foray to Wolf Creek back in 2005 had much in common with Eli Roth’s Hostel, which came out the same year, in that it was very much a slow burner for the first half, setting up the characters and gently introducing us to kindly stranger Mick Taylor before revealing his true nature and opening the throttle up to eleven to take us on a stomach churning ride.

The Funhouse
Stars: Elizabeth Berridge, Shawn Carson, Jeanne Austin, Jack McDermott, Cooper Huckabee, Kevin Conway | Written by Lawrence Block | Directed by Tobe Hooper
Tobe Hooper has had a very diverse career, and I say that with nary a blurb of hyperbole. For every The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you get Crocodile. I love the majority of his films because they give me the feeling of warm and fuzzy nostalgia. But, with The Funhouse which came out at the height of the slasher craze, he was still shaping his now wild career. And the film is drastically different from some of his other films, yet it still retains some of Hooper’s erraticism. There are crazed characters and most of the carnival folk feel very, very real. Hell, the carnival feels real, it’s like it may have visited your hometown. It’s also a great slow burn film, you get to...

The horror genre is always the first to jump on the bandwagon of any sort of gimmick that gets butts in the seats. Life insurance policies, 3-D, found footage, "See Paris Hilton Die" ... but let's be honest: Nothing is a better sales tool than real life.
Slap the label "Based on a True Story" in ominous red letters on that poster, and you've got yourself a surefire scare flick. People say to themselves, "Well, if it could happen to those people ..." Hang on, though, because while a storyline may have at least one toe in the waters of fact, there are varying degrees of "true" in the horror game.
We're taking a gander at the best this gambit has to offer. You can be sure that whether they happened for truthsies or not, these nine shockers have what it takes to frighten you out of your jammies.

Despite frequently being listed among the great horror directors, Tobe Hooper will always have the hardest job of pleasing his fans. No matter what film he makes, it will always be compared to his 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. To this day it remains one of the greatest and most chilling horror films of all time and a true work of genius.
The same can‘t really be said of Crocodile or the overly goofy and unpleasant Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Yet people seem to forget Hooper is capable of making films as good as Poltergeist or Salem’s Lot. Sitting somewhere in the middle is 1981’s The Funhouse, now re-released on a deluxe Blu-ray from Arrow Video from yesterday.
Released at the peak of the early 80’s slasher film craze, The Funhouse was Hooper’s first big budget feature. Despite working with a larger budget and studio pressure, the film...

After the Academy’s attempt at honoring genre during the live show, we saw a real tribute to horror by someone who is truly one of our own. Bob Murawski thanked Sam Raimi for giving him his “first cutting job” in Army of Darkness. His Best Editing award for Hurt Locker was shared by his partner Chris Innis, whom he met on the Raimi produced TV show “American Gothic.”
I gotta say, never since Peter Jackson’s (who was nominated this year for District 9) thank you to the crew of Meet the Feebles has there been such an excellent genre shout out.
On top of working with Raimi for over a decade, Murawski also runs Grindhouse Releasing, which distributes and restores cult and horror films with a focus on extreme Italian cinema. Pieces, The Beyond, Cannibal Holocaust, and I Drink Your Blood are just a few names you’ll find in Grindhouse Releasing's catalogue.
