Featured review
16 year old foster kid Riley Veatch (Katharine Towne) has runaway from her Ohio home to find her birth mother. She tracks down Opal Marie Brown (Lauren Graham), the assistant principal at Gossett High School in California. She's her maybe aunt. Her maybe mother is in a cult in Finland.
This was on for a micro-second in the summer of 2000 on NBC. I don't know if I saw it back in the day, but I definitely remember the name. I thought it was stupid then. I still think that it's stupid now. This is Lauren Graham right before Gilmore Girls. I liked her before I knew her name. I love her flighty character on Caroline in the City. I found the four aired episodes but not the unaired ones.
Riley is the cynical snarky narrator who often manipulates people especially the male half of the population. Opal is struggling to lead her workplace and a mother figure to a teen girl. So it's almost like Gilmore Girls. At this point in time, she's great at this particular role. Katharine is in her 20's, but that happens with legacy network shows about teenage characters. This show has an unlikely premise. The central teen is outside the edge of network TV. The rest is pretty good standard stuff. There is good potential here. On the other hand, I'm glad that it got canceled and Lauren Graham moved on to bigger better things.
