While the "Frasier" revival continues to give the impression that it should have been a one-off special, you can't fault the series for its guest appearances. The first season brought back several big names from the original sitcom, which ran from 1993 to 2004, including Peri Gilpin's Roz Doyle and Bebe Neuwirth's Lilith Sternin. What's more, it also featured some guest stars who weren't "Frasier" alums. The revival tapped modern sitcom royalty in the form of June Diane Raphael for one episode and even brought in a cartoon comedy king for another.
With season 2 of the "Frasier" revival, Peri Gilpin has returned on a recurring basis, and now the show is bringing in other guest stars to help bolster its existing ensemble. Kelsey Grammer's former "Back to You" co-star Patricia Heaton showed up at the top of the season, playing a bartender who seems oddly compatible with the titular...

25 years ago “Strangers with Candy,” currently streaming on Paramount+, premiered on Comedy Central from the brains of Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, Mitch Rouse, and Amy Sedaris. Sedaris also starred as Jerri Blank, the 46-year-old bisexual junkie returning to high school as a freshman. The sitcom was structured like an after-school special with Jerri rarely learning from her past mistakes as she navigates the lessons of being a teenager all over again. I began watching the show in college, after recognizing it from flipping through the TV channels because Sedaris’ Jerri in passing freaked me out.
Its psychotic humor coupled with my own favorite genre — the high school comedy — was a perfect cyanide comedy cocktail. Aggressively offensive with an earnest heart of gold, “Strangers with Candy” was unlike anything I’d ever seen before and Amy Sedaris became my comedy hero.
It’s, frankly, a miracle that “Strangers with Candy” was made,...

Meet the new team running CBS’ “Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” It’s largely the same team that has been managing the late-night program for years.
Colbert tells Variety he has no plans to bring another executive producer on board at present after Chris Licht left to take over management of Warner Bros. Discovery’s CNN in the spring.
“I am always open to producing the show in the most efficient manner. Right now, everything feels fantastic,” says Colbert in an interview to discuss “Pickled,” a new comedy-sports special he has produced with Funny or Die for CBS. “I miss Chris dearly as my friend. I wouldn’t want to run CNN.”
In September, Matt Lappin was named a co-executive producer of “The Late Show,” working alongside two other co-EPs, Tanya Michnevich Bracco and Denise Rehrig. Lappin has worked with Colbert for more than 25 years, including on “Colbert Report” and...

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has promoted Matt Lappin.
Lappin becomes co-exec producer of the late-night CBS show. He was most recently senior supervising producer of the show.
The move will see him expand his responsibilities on the creative side of The Late Show alongside exec producer Tom Purcell. Lappin will continue to be part of the writing staff and will lead the team that produces the monologue and other comedy segments.
It is the first executive move on The Late Show since the departure of exec producer Chris Licht. Licht, who now runs CNN, oversaw the business and operational side of the show with Purcell overseeing the creative direction.
Lappin has been with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert since its launch in 2015 and has worked with Colbert for nearly 25 years. He first served as a writer on Comedy Central’s Strangers With Candy and then as a...

“The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” has promoted Matt Lappin to serve as co-executive producer of the late night show. In his new role, Lappin will help oversee the show’s daily creative direction; his promotion was announced on Tuesday by executive producers Stephen Colbert and Tom Purcell.
Lappin was most recently senior supervising producer. As co-executive producer, he’ll be part of a team that also includes co-EPs Denise Rehrig, Tanya Michnevich Bracco, Barry Julien and Opus Moreschi. Together, they’re all helping Colbert and Purcell run the ship in the absence of former executive producer Chris Licht, who departed “The Late Show” earlier this year to take over CNN as its CEO.
As Variety wrote in February, there was no plan to immediately replace Licht, especially given the show’s solid roster of producers handling day-to-day duties.

Over the course of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law," True Believers have been introduced to a number of interesting, obscure, and unforgettable characters. We have yet to meet Frog Man at this point in the show, but appearances from the Wrecking Crew, Titania, and Madisynn King (with Wongers) have certainly held us over until that day finally arrives. However, in the latest episode of the Disney+ series from Jessica Gao, the show makes the deepest cut to date and pulls out one of the most obtuse characters in all of the Marvel Universe and utilizes him in an absolutely hilarious way.

Ellen Pompeo is set to star in a limited series inspired by real events that has been ordered at Hulu, Variety has learned.
In the untitled show, a Midwestern couple adopts what they believe is an 8-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism. Spare parts of high school comedies from “Peggy Sue Got Married” to “Mean Girls” and beyond have been torn asunder, then sewn back together to create “Senior Year.” In other words, this vehicle for producer-star Rebel Wilson isn’t organic even as a genre homage; its Frankensteinian assemblage always feels more imitative than inspired. Nonetheless, if Alex Hardcastle’s effortfully high-spirited Netflix feature isn’t exactly good, it’s still .

The “Spongebob” prequel series “Kamp Koral” is moving from Nickelodeon to CBS All Access, where it will debut next year as part of the rebranded service.
The series will see a 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at the eponymous camp. In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. “SpongeBob SquarePants'” Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller will co-executive produce the prequel.
It won’t be a 2-dimensional cartoon like the flagship “SpongeBob.” It will instead be computer-generated animation. The move follows last month’s announcement that “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run” from Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies is skipping theaters and will premiere on premium Video On Demand, followed by a debut exclusively on CBS All Access early next year.

Ian Holm, esteemed knighted British actor and standout of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Alien, is dead at the age of 88, having succumbed to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Holm passed away in a London hospital peacefully near his family and caregiver, as his agent confirmed to The Guardian, referring to the late actor as “charming, kind and ferociously talented,” and that “we will miss him hugely.”
Holm stood as a peer amongst other knighted legends like Ian McKellen and Laurence Olivier, but he never saw himself as a marquee-dominating movie star type, having maintained the grounded approach of a working actor. It’s a conceit evidenced by the way in which he selected roles across his 60-year career on stage and screen, rarely revisiting thematically similar characters, lest he become typecast. Ian Holm, the classically trained Shakespearean actor best known to film audiences for his performances in films including the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies, “Chariots of Fire” and “Alien,” has died. He was 88.
A rep for the actor has said Holm died in hospital on Friday morning. The actor had been battling Parkinson’s Disease for a number of years. However, as recently as January, Holm appeared in person to collect the Newport Beach Film Festival’s Icon Award in London.
Holm, who was celebrated for interpretations of most of the Shakespeare canon, including a towering “King Lear,” also excelled onstage in the original production of Harold Pinter’s “The Homecoming,” which he also brought to Broadway. He began working in films only midway through his career, debuting with an adaptation of his stage performance in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in 1968.

For many the 1990s were the Age of Irony, with hipster cultural touchstones like Spy magazine and the TV show “Strangers With Candy” helping make snark the preferred flavor of the day. “The Simpsons” was also a big player in that area, yet arguably no cartoon series before had been quite so postmodern as “The Ren & Stimpy Show,” which premiered a couple years after it in 1991. While Matt Groening’s creation still chugs on decades later, way past its pop-phenomenon peak yet remaining a valuable Fox commodity, John Kricfalusi’s was short-lived — and his own control of it even shorter.

Is The Mandalorian possibly suffering a middle-of-first-season slump?
While The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 5 is still cooler than much of what is on TV right now and made excellent use of its guests -- as well as some favorite Star Wars Universe planets, creatures, and droids -- it felt kind of filler-ish.
And considering the Jedi baby is currently more popular in social media than any of the 2020 Democratic primary candidates, the episode sure did not spend much airtime on him.
But that's Ok, as many of us would rather The Mandalorian not be a cutesy kids' show over a glorious hormone-pumping Star Wars adventure.
So what's wrong with it, then? Well, the plot of "The Gunslinger" is just meh, and shows the series might need more than just random exploits on rad planets to stay as cool as it ought to be.

Vying for the heart of Howard Stern co-host Robin Quivers isn’t for the weak. So “American Idol” alum Jackie Tohn, who stars in the Netflix wrestling comedy “Glow,” threw herself into the ring, recruiting Stern song parody veteran Eli Bradon for a pair of parodies that had Stern and his SiriusXM listeners in stitches.
Tohn’s two collaborations with Braden — raunchy love songs to Quivers set to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s sultry duet of “Shallow” from “A Star is Born,” and a positively filthy take on Cher’s “Believe” — both received big praise from Stern, who said the “Shallow” duet, which encouraged Quivers to try hooking up with girls, gave him “chills.”
“Fred is tearing up right now,” he laughed.
Getting the song on the show, Tohn said, and having Stern give her a big plug was one of the “biggest highlights of my career,” she tells Variety.

Actress and comedian Amy Sedaris has joined the cast of Disney’s live-action Lion King remake.
She will be voicing a brand-new animal character, an elephant shrew whose name is not yet known. Sedaris is known for her many roles in cartoon voice work, TV, and movies. She worked with director Jon Favreau previously on his movie Chef.
She is so funny and will be a great asset to the already fantastic cast that includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Oliver was Zazu, and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa.
From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival.

This story about Amy Sedaris first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Amy Sedaris has long reigned in the cult comedy space, thanks to oddball characters in straightforward rom-coms (“Maid in Manhattan”) or delirious streaming work (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”). And, of course, her star-making turn in the Comedy Central deep cut “Strangers With Candy.”
But, in recent years, Sedaris has been pumping out work that borders on performance art by playing a domestic guru by way of the “The Twilight Zone.” This is manifested in two books (“Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People” and “I Like You: Entertaining Under the Influence”), and has now earned the comedian an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for her TruTV series, “At Home With Amy Sedaris.”

Amy Sedaris is a comedy legend thanks, in part, to Jerri Blank. When Sedaris was in her mid-30s, she originated the “Strangers With Candy” role, playing a 46-year-old high school freshman who looked like she was pushing 60. She was “a boozer, a user, and a loser,” and it showed.
Now, Jerri still shows herself in ways good and not so good.
“[Today people] recognize you from Jerri, which means I’m starting to look like Jerri Blank,” Sedaris said in an interview with IndieWire. “So [that] just makes you feel old.”
But with fake age comes real experience. Though her most famous character barely starts to tell the story of an acclaimed sketch performer, playwright, advice columnist, and author, the series and its effect on modern comedy is undeniable.

Actress and comedian Amy Sedaris is no stranger to crafts, entertaining and homemaking, as she’s demonstrated with her two books, I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence and Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People. Plus, we can never forget her one-time cheese balls and cupcakes catering business, Dusty Food Cupcakes. Now, the former Strangers With Candy star is showcasing her diverse but necessary homemaking skills on the new truTV series, At Home With Amy Sedaris, co-created by her and Paul Dinello.
On the 10-episode comedy, her quirky tidbits are bought to life in lessons on creating Popsicle stick buddies, with kids dipping their glue-covered figurines into bags of hair, and how to gut a fish. And there will be plenty of celebrity guests, from Jane Krakowski and Stephen Colbert, to get a firsthand demonstration.
While there’s an earnest humor written into each segment, everything is ultimately derived from her years of crafting and entertaining. “It’s something...

Amy Sedaris just wants to entertain you. The chameleon actress and writer, best known for Strangers With Candy, the Comedy Central series she starred in and co-created, BoJack Horseman, and guest roles on shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Broad City, is returning to TV with her own show, At Home With Amy Sedaris. It's a delightfully wacky lifestyle truTV series where she makes things like potato ships and does Angela Lansbury's morning movement routine. Why? Why not! Sedaris' Instagram feed, where she admittedly posts a lot, is full of kitschy crafts and things about her pet rabbit. It's a good indication of the type of crafts and kookiness you'll find on At Home With Amy Sedaris, right down...

Among the many folks who rolled their eyes at the “Fifty Shades of Grey” phenomenon, there exists a surprising faction of critics: The proudly kinky. Not only did the books and subsequent films get a lot of things dangerously wrong about Bdsm, they say, but “Fifty Shades” was seriously devoid of the joy or playfulness that leads many practitioners to don leather bodices and ball gags. That questionable lack of humor is what led Jenny Jaffe to write “Neurotica,” a bite-sized series about a dominatrix with Ocd currently running on IFC’s Comedy Crib.
The idea began percolating for Jaffe around the time that “Fifty Shades” started taking off. “It was so self-serious and dour,” she said. “There was clearly an appetite for stories about kink, but I found it really strange that the topic gets approached with this really heavy hand. Human sexuality is so expansive and funny, and when it’s good,...
