Despite Wuhrer, film is to predictable
rosscinema17 September 2003
I thought this was going to be another "Skin-amax" flick that pops up late at night on cable and stars Shannon Tweed. But this is basically a low budget thriller with the emphasis on low budget. Film is about a woman named Kate (Kari Wuhrer) who is totally infatuated with Sara (Farrah Forke) but she lives in California. Kate tells her lesbian lover Zoey (Natalie Radford) to come with her to the west coast and gives her a phony reason to come. Sara is living with Dylan (Matthew Porretta) and planning on getting engaged which spoils Kate's plans on buying a flower shop with Sara in New Orleans. Kate gets Zoey to help her kill Dylan and make it look like a robbery. Kate stays with Sara to console her and creep back into her life! They decide to open a flower shop in Los Angeles and Kate blackmails a man named Jack (Joel Gretsch) so he will seduce Sara and then dump her but Jack really learns to like her instead. Kate's also been giving Sara the date rape drug to knock her out at night and take advantage of her. This film was directed by Eric DelaBarre and for his first effort its adequately made. There are about two scenes where characters are talking to one another but you cannot hear them and you only hear the background music. I thought these scenes were well filmed and it shows a spark of real creativity. Wuhrer and Forke and...oh hell, everyone in this film is good looking. Thats why this has the appearance of one of those soft porn films late night on cable. I was surprised by the small amount of nudity in certain scenes. Even in the lesbian love scene they both keep their clothes on. There are some quick shots of breasts but fans of Wuhrer might be a tad disappointed. Not a bad late night thriller and Wuhrer is always worth a look. But the overall script is silly and goes way over the top! Fans of Wuhrer have a head start.

So-So Flick
rosemcgowanrulez200123 August 2001
For a direct to video movie, what can we really expect? But with Kari Wuhrer in it, well then it does make it worthwhile to rent. Me being a Kari fan, I bought the DVD. The story is a good one here but the acting around Kari and Wings' Farrah Forke is really really bad. Lots of bad continuity throughout the flick as well. But if you can sit through the minor glitches like that and accept the bad acting around the two main stars, I think you may like it. But you have to keep in mind it is basically a B movie. Us Kari Wuhrer fans though will enjoy the lesbian scene in this movie which is what we all basically wait for and know will happen. Like I said though, B movie all over it. So if you are expecting something stellar then I say pass on it, but if you like Kari Wuhrer and don't mind low budget flicks with a pretty good storyline, then rent it. I would give the film a 6 out of 10 and 3 of those are added for Kari baby. Always remember that when it comes to Kari Wuhrer..her movies are rated "R" but she always puts a little "X" in them. Betrayel,Seduction,Jealousy,Revenge and oh ya T & A, all wrapped up in this flick.

Truly Awful
Niro8 October 2000
I'll watch anything which stars the occasionally delightful Kari Wuhrer, but this is pure dreck ~ it doesn't even look like her (which is our loss).

It intrigues me when a director claims to be an auteur by leading the credits with " A Film By Eric DelaBarre," when it really should note that it's "The Film By Eric DelaBarre."

For the chance of there being another film by this poseur seems remote.

1 Niro~Star (out of 10, only because there's no ZERO, apart from the director)...

Decent but nothing spectacular
Sciurus7 March 2000
Say what you want about Kari Wuhrer, when she tries to be she can be a fine actress. She works very well as a woman desperate to keep her place as the dominant focus in her friend's life. It is wonderful to see Farrah Forke again (remember her in Wings?). Unfortunately, the cast around them is sub-par and the script seems to be missing something, especially in the beginning. If the setup had been a little more in depth, this could have been an excellent little sleeper. As it is, there are fine performances by Wuhrer and Forke but little else to back them up. Could have been superb, but it settles for being run of the mill.

Several notable scenes but disappointing overall
EdwinHui17 June 2000
When I read the summary for this movie, I had high expectations for it. Boy was I disappointed. The only thing that saves this movie from absolute failure is the fine perfomances by Kari Wuhrer and Farrah Forke. The only thing that I found remotely interesting was the seduction scene by Kate but even that isn't enough for someone to rent this movie What annoyed me most was how predictable the ending was. It was pretty much your typical Hollywood ending. If I wanted a sissy ending, I'd go watch a Disney movie. Just for once can't the bad guys win? If you're looking for a better lesbian movie go see Bound or When Night is Falling.

Great plot, great characters, poor editing
gene-bonvie25 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The atmosphere of the movie is sensational, the characters are well developed, although soap-opera's at times. Unfortunately, the editing was poor, bordering on laughable. I am not a person who picks apart movie editing (this is the first time I've had to comment on it); however, there were a couple of obvious flaws that just jumped out at me, and I had to review them at reduced speed to confirm I just saw what I did.

(1) Kate is having a bath, and getting angry by herself. As she gets up and leaves the bath, the waist-strap from her underwear is fully visible. Her privates were in no danger of being exposed, it was just a poorly edited shot. If she is capable of all the carnage she causes, that's one thing; but taking a bath with your underwear on is just plain warped.

Also? (2) It was quite nice of her friend "Zoey" to help drag her own body out of the car, as Kate disposes of her. You can clearly see Zoey elevate her right leg, then firmly plant her right foot on the ground as she is being removed. She really was a friend after all.

Other than that, I did enjoy the movie. It was a challenging effort to portray a dark plot on the sun-washed California coast, with marina and sailboat in much of the film.

Packed with so much flaws and errors, that you couldn`t hammer more into a film
rainlaws23 June 2001
When I entered our living room 2 hours ago, I found my girlfriend watching an obviously cheap American movie on TV. I told her that I wasn´t too keen on watching a bad movie on a Saturday evening, and that watching bad movies can only be fun if they´re REALLY bad. She told me to sit down and enjoy. Now I can only say: hats off to her movie instinct! We laughed ourselves silly at this huge and not quite unsuccessful attempt at shooting a totally dumb, pointless, ridiculous, unrealistic "erotic thriller", packed with so much flaws and errors, that you couldn`t possibly hammer more into a film. God, this was deliciously SO NOT believable! Best moments: the romantic and senselessly repeated boat trips of the love couple, underlined with a bad country song (must be a friend of the director); the repeated interludes with the evil female character on the phone, establishing totally useless sub-plots which are either not followed,or referred to much later ; the explanation, why the main female character had headaches for years (muhahahaha!). And they didn´t even get the sex scene right, with this strap of a bra going REPEATEDLY (ya, again) on-shoulder, off-shoulder, on-shoulder, off-...you get the picture!

Disappointed
narcohampon8 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I actually loved the flick up until they threw in that extra bit of crap about how she had drugged her during there college years as well. U can say im one of the few if not the only one that actually wanted things to work out between the two. But as always they throw icing on the cake in order that you may see from yet anothers misguided perception of how things really are or so they 'believe it so. Unrequited love is such a sad thing in the real world... Almost brings tears to my eyes.

I mean if this were a love film then theyd make a really cute couple.. But NooO! It has to play the stereotypical obsessed stalker killer lesbian card instead as many others have done before or aim to do in the future... Give us a true love story, without a tragic ending for once please :/

The worst case of the 'evil lesbian' cliché I've ever seen (may contain spoilers)
Meneth26 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Kate goes to Los Angeles to visit her college friend Sara. The two women promised each other to open up a flower shop in New Orleans, their home town, but Kate finds out that the plans are foiled because Sara found a man and settled in LA permanently.

Kate, it seems, is in love with her old friend. Showing how all lesbians are supposedly deceiving, calculating, crazy bitches, Kate and another of her college friend proceed through a roller-coaster of murder, love, drugs, sex, blackmail, and a final round of killings. In that order.

The first half of the movie is quite nice. Though Kate & Co does kill Sara's fiancé, you almost get the feeling that it might work out in the end. Then the New Guy(NG) comes along. Things go downhill from there. It turns out the NG was blackmailed by Kate to befriend Sara and the dump her, proving to her that men are not to be trusted. Unfortunately for Kate, NG *can* be trusted. By Sara, anyway.

The craziness ensues and we find out that all of Sara's headaches during their college time together was due to Kate feeding her rape drugs, which has a hangover-like side effect. More cement to the 'evil/crazy lesbian' cliché.

I'm kinda curious as to why no one cared that Sara killed Kate in the end, when she could easily have turned her over to the police instead.

A great thriller
creatively718 September 2000
I saw this film at the Newport Beach Film Festival where the writer, director, producer was awarded the "Filmmaker of the Future Award." When you watch the movie, it's amazing to think he made the film for $74,000. It looks great...the acting is great. I remember during the question and answer session following the film, the director said he wished he had more time to do a production rewrite. I think he found out just how hard it is to make a indie film with credit cards. My hats off to him...the film is great. I loved Kari Wuhrer.

So many plot holes. So little time.
hannahchow30 July 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Beware--some plot spoilers to follow. OK. Bravo for Eric DelaBarre in getting his indie project to the screen for under six figures. It this was easy, everybody would do it.

That said, it's a lame little "Fatal Attraction" rip-off. In his defense, Mr DelaBarre has an eye for camera work. There's a genuine budding director here. He does the erotic thriller bits well. But his writing just ain't makin' it. Why would FBI agents rather than local cops be investigating a sex crime allegation? Why would they enter a home without permission or warrants? Why do they talk like cartoon cops? Why is a free-lance photog living aboard a quarter-million dollar yacht while seemingly never having a paying job? Why are these people supposedly from New Orleans but can't pronounce it like locals do (noo-WAW-linz)? The cast of little-knowns and complete unknowns are no threat to the Oscars. Leading ladies Kari Wuhrer and Farrah Forke turn in competent performances, but the supporting cast gives the impression they paid DelaBarre to get into this movie. But as bad as it is in places, it's a guilty pleasure to watch. "Kate's Addiction" is one of those so-bad-it's-good kinda movies. Prop your feet up and pour a cold one. It's gonna be a steamy night.

More Than Just Friends...
azathothpwiggins5 October 2021
Kate and Sara (Kari Wuhrer and Farrah Forke) were friends in high school. Years later, Sara has moved on with her life. Unfortunately, Kate hasn't done as well, and decides to look up her old friend.

One day, Sara is surprised when Kate shows up at her home "out of the blue". Sara is unaware that Kate is harboring a secret grudge / agenda, and will destroy anyone who stands in her way. It's immediately apparent that Kate is a psychopath who will stop at nothing to possess Sara.

Madness and murder ensue.

KATE'S ADDICTION is a well-made erotic thriller with a gloriously ruthless title character! Wuhrer plays her bonkers role with unhinged gusto.

Hellishly grand entertainment...
