Flint Keller, we hardly knew ye.
tarbosh2200025 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Allen Chester (Keller) is an aspiring actor who moves from his hometown of Chicago to Hollywood to pursue his dream. While he works on breaking into the movie biz, he works at a butcher shop. His co-worker is blonde weirdo Carter (Preston) who assesses his work performance by how many times he sneezes in people's meat purchases. One night while waiting until midnight for the meat truck to arrive (is this common practice?), a mysterious woman pops into the shop and asks for Allen's help. Her name is Leona Alexander (Parks), and it seems she's trying to escape the clutches of criminal overlord Manny (Z'Dar). After accidentally killing some goons, the pair go on the run. Manny is especially mad because he believes Leona has two million dollars worth of his money and drugs. Meanwhile, Allen and Leona work through their mistrust issues and form a bond. Eventually Allen, Carter and a friend of theirs who is a street swindler act as makeshift mercenaries and stage a raid on Manny's compound. Who will then become the FRESH KILL? Fresh Kill is one of the better City Lights titles we've seen in terms of quality of acting, and technically as well it's an improvement over past efforts. As we've discussed before, we find something inexplicably alluring about City Lights movies, and despite no-nothings bashing some of the more amateurish aspects of their output, we've seen almost all of them as of the time of this writing. Many of the CL regulars are in front of and behind the camera, and John Gonzales' score is one of his best and helps the movie a lot.

Flint Keller as Allen Chester (or is it Allen Chester as Flint Keller?) is actually a likable main character, as opposed to the unlikable central characters in City Lights' Mayhem (1986). He even goes through a character arc. Like Allen Chester, The Flintster should have done more in his acting career. Another draw for this movie is the presence of the great Robert Z'Dar. It was an early role and he looks svelte. Better things were yet to come in his career, but he does add a lot here. Also adding to the strength of the cast is Steve Welles as Mike, who runs an airplane hanger. This man is an American hero, as well as an American treasure.

Besides Mike, Fresh Kill is filled with odd characters and off-kilter situations. This comes through in the scene when Allen and Leona go to hide out at Leona's mother's house, and she and her mother smoke a pipe while the three of them watch torture porn. It seems pretty awkward for Allen. And the way writer/director Joseph Merhi depicts L.A. as crime-ridden, even lawless is also very entertaining. Merhi once again seems influenced by the classic Film Noir era - but Fresh Kill was shot during the L.A. big hair era. The mashup is amusing. And while the film does get a bit boring before the climax (a very common problem), there is also some over-the-top violence to keep things afloat.

Featuring the pounding song "Lost In the City" by Gonzales (sung by Paul Shortino) - not to be confused with L.A. Crackdown II's "Lost In the Night"(doesn't every City Lights movie have a song like this?), we want to know when a CD is coming out of all these songs. After all, this one is a movie highlight, and even plays during the first couple of scenes in the movie! Also it should be noted that there is a trailer for Heat Street after the movie. Fresh Kill remains one of the better gems in the tennis bracelet that is the City Lights Canon. It probably won't be to everyone's taste, but there are those of you out there who will want to check it out, if only for Robert Z'Dar. You know who you are. Flint Keller, we hardly knew ye.

Another City Lights Video "winner"...*cough*...
EyeAskance14 November 2004
During the mid-80s and into the early 90s, City Lights Video doubled as a production company. With two grunts and a plop, they pushed out a number of homegrown features, not one of which is worth three cents in Hell. FRESH KILL, at least, has the small-beans appeal of featuring B character actor Robert Z'Dar. Here he plays the baddie(imagine that), massacring everyone at any place our hero and his leading lady have just left. The girl, as it turns out, was once his lover...and...I...*think* there's some issue involving some stolen money...but I really can't say for certain because the sound quality is so poor that at various times throughout the movie you can actually hear background foley as clear as a bell, but the actors are moving their lips to an indecipherable garble of near silence. This is an entirely unacceptable flaw in any film...not being able to hear the characters speak is ridiculous. It is for that reason I rate this a 1 out of 10.

not really a horror movie, not really good either
FieCrier28 January 2005
A young guy from Chicago moves to California to try to become an actor. Crime is so rampant where he moves, a hooker gets her purse snatches by a group of young hooligans, and when she catches one of the boys, she knifes him to death in broad daylight! Cops show up seconds later!

The would-be actor ends up getting a job in a butcher shop, where he and a co-worker like to spit on people's meat for some reason. When he's left alone to wait for a delivery, a blonde runs in asking to hide, as she's being chased by two men. They show up, and in self defense, the actor runs a knife through one, and she buries a meat cleaver in the forehead of the other guy. Now they're on the run.

The blonde is the ex-girlfriend of Manny, played by Robert Z'Dar (Maniac Cop). He's a drug dealer, and she took some of his cocaine and/or his money. I think his gang is called MENZA AKA Fresh Kill; the title came up in connection with him, anyway.

I thought this was a horror movie, but it's more of a action/crime/drama I guess, apart from the people who get killed by the young couple or Manny and his gang. Looked like it was shot on video, but the picture is crystal clear. Can't recommend it at all. Z'Dar's performance is fairly goofy, but not worth seeing.

Warning: Spoilers
This just has the perfect bad acting im looking for. If your a bad b movie buff check this one out! And oh......the sound quality. A real turd. I had to turn on subtitles at one point. And it even said inaudible. Lol The scene in the pizzaria oh my. At least five minutes of background noise while there lips are moving. The scene that made it though. The main character ripping up bags of cocaine in slow motion. I nearly soiled myself! Lol. Throw in one of the dumbest endings ever that makes no sense. Perfect. I rate my bad b movies 1-5. Its a solid 3. It is Good Bad!

One of City Light's fresher views
PeterMitchell-506-56436411 December 2012
Again, another one of the City Lights collection. Here an aspiring actor, Chester, who works at a butcher's, no, not as a cabbie, or in a restaurant. He gets into a whole load of trouble with the wrong girl, who's fella, Manny (Robert Dzar, funny as, in this) a big crime lord, whose place is one of grand riches, is after her. This girl has some really weird friends, one of them, a real nutter, who runs a helicopter place, quite philosophical, who remarks about Anthony Quinn and spouts off a number of movies. He's one of them who tries to help them in their quest, as Z'dar's men are quickly moving in on them. Some quite strong violence, like in a shootout scene, and the killing of Chester's parents too. It has a unexpected and sudden finale, where this does one better than a lot of these City Light's films which are pretty pathetic. Chester, who's aspirations of stardom have gone, becomes money hungry with his new girl, dead set against the idea. Afterall it's Manny's money. This makes for good entertainment, but again don't expect too much. One unnecessary scene, has a kid knifing a whore, if you can believe that. Quite a rare find now, this film would be, but good luck.

Robert Zdar
Vadezy30 October 1999
I wouldn't want to be blasphemous or anything. I do love the Lord, but I also very much love Robert Zdar. Now my friend Robby and I got this movie for two dollars at a Grandpas and we watched it and wow that guy has big old jaw! Suggest not being of sound mind when watching the film. That way the soothing musical score of John Rodriguez can melt your resolve and help you discover what it is to have fun when watching a movie. Plus, this girl gets shot in her boobies and they heal by the next scene. You must see this movie! Go rent him!
