  Michael : Is it true?

  Sky : It is true but not true. Understand it like this: This place was once a meta-centre, what your book calls a holy island. And there were circles, not circles of beasts but circles of force. Travellers, gods as you call them, have visited this place centuries ago. What you read are symbols, and fragments of symbols. It is like this, the truth that men once saw was a window of many colours, now the window is shattered and lies in glittering shards across the floor. But the fragments you pick up cannot be the whole and the wind of chaos begins to blow through the open space.

  Michael : Chaos?

  Sky : Yes.

  Michael : Then there's no point.

  Sky : There will be survivors, they are the ones I must help. Not... you.

• Goodchild : Life or destruction, you must choose.

  Sky : The human species has already chosen. They made their choice five million years ago. With the first flint, man bent nature to his will. There can be no turning back.

  Goodchild : There must be. Your way, the way of intelligence is the way to destruction. You made man make that choice, you made him violate the natural law.

  Sky : No, human life has scorned both of us. The chaos to come is of man's own making. Neither you or I can help him now.

• Sky : There is something there, or the echo of something. The place is in honour of the travellers. I did not expect this desctruction, this desecration. Nothing has any worth, does it?

• Sky : He is one of the few. His mind is not cluttererd or patterned like yours. It's doors are opened. He can see what I see. He will interpret that to you.

  Jane Vennor : But he's supposed to be... simple.

  Sky : No, it is you who is complicated.
