Generally hailed as a very good movie with universal appeal
kemalcan20 May 2005
Muhsin Bey is frequently quoted as being a turning point in Turkish cinema. With some notable exceptions, much of Turkey's movie production up to Muhsin Bey consisted of cheap tear-jerkers, juvenile comedy and remakes of popular foreign movies. While many of these movies still have appeal for Turkish audiences today, it is mainly for nostalgic reasons. Muhsin Bey, in contrast, is an original movie with both comedic and dramatic elements, dealing with social change in a way that is both universal and specific to Turkey.

Muhsin Bey ("Mr. Muhsin") is a music producer/manager in Istanbul in the 70s. At the end of his career, not having "discovered" any talent recently, his finances and credibility are suffering. Using last favors from his many friends in the industry, he sets up a singing competition, promising the winner a contract. Among many applicants is one Ali Nazik, an immigrant to Istanbul from South-eastern Turkey with a wonderful voice. The movie goes on to tell the story of Muhsin Bey and Ali Nazik as they try to make a star out of Ali Nazik, while drawing attention to the change in values and culture of Istanbul as a result of the very large immigration from eastern Turkey.

A Story of Cultural Change in a Country Leaves No Place for a Gentleman
turker3234 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Mr. Muhsin is a beneficient, honorable, and respected man. He used to be a famous producer years before, but started to run his own business as an "organizer" to arrange singers, orchestras for weddings, parties and events since his expertise on Turkish Classical Music became less important day by day. His surname "Kanadikirik" symbolizes his character as an angel with "Broken Wings" in the era. While his all friends became figures in the music industry with their greediness and disrespect to previous artists and masters, his life turns into a mess which he barely survives, but never gives up his character as a gentleman.

One morning he enters to the building he works, he learns that he lost his office due to his assistant who had been playing gambling for six months by using the rent he was supposed to pay to the landlord. Same day, a stranger, Ali Nazik, finds him and asks his help to become a famous singer. Mr. Muhsin rejects him, but when Ali Nazik follows him to his apartment and waits for him in the middle of a street whole night, Mr. Muhsin decides to help and invites him to his house to stay for the night. But then he finds out that Ali Nazik has a great talent, and he can sing better than rising stars in the music industry; so, he decides to work with him as his producer.

When they find a few chances thanks to Mr. Muhsin's old friends in the industry, Ali Nazik's lack of experience and musical knowledge leads them to fail. Mr. Muhsin becomes his mentor and teaches everything from standing on the stage to singing. On their way to make him famous, Mr. Muhsin lacks to find his track as a producer since everything had changed in the industry. His trust on his assistant leads him to make decisions which he never wanted and results put him into a socio-cultural area which he can never survive. In the end, he realizes that being a man like that would never give him anything, but trouble. Therefore, he decides to leave not his character, but the industry he dedicated himself since it does not worth to be a part of.

As director Yavuz Turgul said, Muhsin Bey is a story of change, a story of a person who cannot settle himself to a new era which greediness and immorality became the most important qualifications to become successful in music industry. From the beginning till the last sequence, everything goes wrong in Mr. Muhsin's life. His car never starts when he needs, his assistant never does a job correctly, his ingrateful friends who owed a lot to him becomes important figures in the music industry. When Ali Nazik enters to his life, he tries to be adopted to the era. However, he fails miserably and loses everything he has; his flowers die, and his singer Ali Nazik contracts with a producer to become a arabesque music star which Mr. Muhsin never wanted him to sing. In the last sequence, he leaves everything in an arabesque music club which Ali Nazik performs as a shining star, and walkes out of there relieved. This life out of this social habitat full of incorrectness and greediness grants him happiness he was apart for a long time.

Also Yavuz Turgul is known as a director who uses "death" as a signature in his movies. His stories focus on breakingpoints which whole society faced a change and found itself in a new era, and the certain figures from the previous era loses their lives in order to represent this vile circle. However, in this movie, Mr. Muhsin can find the happiness in the end, but only when he dies as a "Producer" symbolically. He does not lose his life, but loses his business and reputation. The only way to survive in a society full of corruption might be killing his own character, but it is impossible to do for a gentleman like Mr. Muhsin; so he had to put himself apart.

PS: Late 80s were one of the hardest periods of Turkish Cinema Industry. The street known as "Yesilcam" had lost most important figures, and producers started to lose money since VHS technology and TVs pulled a massive amount of audience from the movie theatres. For this reason, producers started to use low-quality production materials from the cameras in studio to the film in the editrooms in order to reduce production costs. Even though it was one the best movies in Turkish Cinema, Muhsin Bey's copies could not survive as it deserved. In 2014, a Turkish University started a project to remaster it. However, the copies were hard to deal with and they had to remove some scenes. It was the first time a movie remastered in 4K resolution, and the job was done great. On the other hand, important scenes like Mr. Muhsin's dream in the opening scene when a Turkish Classic Music singer singing with an Alaturca orchestra, or some scenes where Mr. Muhsin struggled to start his car's engine were cut out and affected the narrative. For this reason, the old version is a moving movie that give more tears on your eyes and highly recommended to prefer.

best ever Turkish movie
heksigil27 December 2008
If you like a lot the film you watch, you may want to see it again someday. Since I liked it so much, I've seen "Muhsin Bey" twice. But then one day, while I was zapping I saw it on TV. I couldn't move to another channel before seeing "the end" again! Years went by, this situation repeated many times. Even today if I happen to see it somewhere, I watch it till the end. It is a heart warming movie with wonderful actors. I don't believe that there can be a single person who wouldn't admire this story who lived in Istanbul before the 80'ies.It's a perfect mirror to the change this city and the people who live in it went through. Also it's one of the best stories told on "social loneliness".

One of the best movies ever made
ormandafantom25 May 2004
This movie is definitely the best Turkish movie, and one of the best I've ever seen. Makes you really feel the defeat of old-school man who is one of the last bearers of honor, decency and humanity, against the "emerging markets" people. A very sad story is told in a comedy manner. It's a universal story, not only for Turks, but for everybody.

Muhsin Bey (Sener Sen) is a music producer who actually ran out of business, but still keeping to exist in business, occupying a table in a Turkish cafe as him last place of business. At early 80s arabesk music has its peak in Turkey, where Muhsin strongly resists to produce any arabesk albums. He would make only quality Turk and folk music. He is the only one regularly visiting an old lady who was once a great singer. One day, a guy named Ali Nazik comes from the country, wanting to be a famous singer. Whatever the circumstances are, Muhsin would invest only in quality music.

kayabay31 March 2001
For me this is the beginning of a new era. One of the best Turkish Films ever made & a mile stone in Turkish film producing. Sener Sen is at one of his best performances ( Eskiya was the other one... ). A film everyone must see before making a decision on the Turkish Cinema...

Masterpiece

Warning: Spoilers
Muhsin Bey is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Let me tell you why...

First of all, the story is beautiful... Being a music producer with strict principles hasn't really helped Mr. Muhsin in his business. Trying to produce good music was not the way to stay alive where most of the people are listening to Arabesque so he tries his last chance with a young man who came from the countryside. He knows that it is his last chance in the business so he wants to play big, he risks everything he has to make Ali Nazik a star.

But is Ali Nazik the guy who deserves all this effort? The problem starts here. While Muhsin is thinking of producing good music and doing good things, he is dreaming of being an Arabesque singer, having gold chains on his neck and lots of women around him. Muhsin realized that he made a mistake but it was the end for him...

What I really liked about the movie is that the director did not try to show the beauty of Istanbul so obviously. I like it this way because Istanbul is just like a good painting which would steal the thunder of all the acting in the movie. Seeing Istanbul from the rooftops is still beautiful.

And the most important thing about the movie, the brilliant acting performance of Sener Sen. He is one of the very few actors on earth who can change the mood of the audience just with a move of his eyebrows. Ugur Yucel's performance was outstanding as well.

I recommend the movie to all people who would like to see all these things I have written above. Even though it has a sad ending, it is kind of happy too. Him leaving with the widow and her child looks like a new start.

The film simply argues "world".it is also the peak point of Turkish cinema and Şener Şen with this film proves his talent one more time.
yunusmelih23 March 2009
The film simply argues the "world". the world but in an eastern manner on behalf of Muhsin bey.

Although starting point of the director may not be as i claim, this does not change the fact for me.Muhsin bey is the man who loses.loses with roses.that is not problem.

After watching the film, you feel that something has changed in your mind for example real meaning of winning,losing,life,music,love... in the background hearing the voice of an older woman that is singing in Turkish classical music finally makes you something like a bird that bleeds from its wings on the ocean.

To conclude,i can say that watch this film not just to see the peak point of the Turkish cinema but also for the peak point of the acting who is absolutely most talented actor of all Turkish cinema history;Şener Şen.

This film is judges the erosion of cultural values in turkey
mmeric534-129 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
excellent because lyric, didactic but not boring, the last impression of Ali Nazik makes you angry and sad in same time. Sener Sen and Ugur Yucel plays magnificent. If you want to see a true film, this is a must see. If you liked Eskiya, zugurt aga, ask filmlerinin unutulmaz yonetmeni, ikinci bahar (TV series) you like this film very much. The changing of cultural values, the changing of Istanbul is very dramatic and striking, This film is hits you from your heart and you ask yourself where is my childhood, is this my country??

This is the best play of Ugur Yucel The character change of Ali Nazik is magnifically played by him, It's hard to find tapes or DVD's but find it and watch it. Strongly recommended You will love it.
