An Honest Review
generationofswine1 April 2017
Can you imagine your kids, glued to the television, watching a cartoon as if it were the real Olympics and rooting for their favorite team of cartoon characters to win? that's sort of exactly what this show was. I vaguely remember arguing with the twins next door about what team was better and worrying that the Really Rottins would win even though they always cheated and....the 80s were insane for children.

Cartoon crack.

And hysterical to boot.

Unfortunately, as you get older, it's harder to really identify with cartoons and root for your favorite teams like you did when you were really little.

It's harder to suspend your disbelief enough to convince yourself that, yes, this is a real competition like the Olympics for cartoons...

But as a kid, this was awesome and as an adult, well, it's as nostalgic as it is embarrassing. The vague memories of your five-year-old self and how memorized you were by the Olympics, how much you felt was at stake...well...

The good news is that now you can introduce it all to 5 year-olds and watch them get as excited about it as you were.

Good Parody Of The 1976 Olympic Games
bigverybadtom5 March 2024
I was disappointed in the previous "Yogi's Gang" series, but this successor cartoon, a parody of the 1976 Olympic Games, makes up for it. Again many Hanna-Barbera characters are brought back and new ones added, and they are divided into three competing sports teams, the Yogi Yahooies, the Scoobie-Doobies, and the Really Rottens, the latter composed of villainous characters who try to win by cheating.

This is not a morality play, but simply a comedy with the various teams competing in various Olympic-type events. The Really Rottens, invariably jeered by the audience, try to cheat every time, and usually fail, but sometimes they get away with it. Basically a period piece for the tykes, but still enjoyable.

Let me introduce you my Top#1 Favourite Cartoon of my childhood
CihanVercan29 August 2009
Joseph Barbera and William Hanna had captured '80s and '90s the -X generation kids' minds through this very educational and very joyful cartoon series. Their cartoons from '60s and '70s gained much more attention from the TV-channel operators by means of Laff-A-Lympics featuring the most popular leading characters of the various of cartoon franchisees including Yogi Bear(my favourite), Scooby-Doo and their very own evil friends such as Frank Frankenstone and Cavemouse from Flintstones, Dread Baron from Yogi Bear Show and such.

My favourite team was Yogi Bear's team named Yogi Yahooeys. In their 3-team competition, forming up with 10-15 players with only 1 to race each game(2 for pairwise races) there were Scooby-Doobies and Really Rottens, as well; which they compete with each other through several Olympic games all over the world and all over the seasons of the year endlessly. That was good to see the most spectacular places on earth in cartoon view, and for a child that's also good to learn political geography by the way. They have gone to Pyramids in Egypt to start up a race in the desert, they went to Moscow-Russia near Kremlin Palace to find a threatful KGB agent, they went to Hawaii to jet-ski, climbed to mount.Everest, did bungee-jumping in New Zealand, dived in Madagascar, raced with Kangoroos in Australia and so much more. 4 different locations and 4 different races each episode with hard to guess who's going to win each race, who's going to break an Olympics record and for the best moment with the sum of all tournament points for the same episode: Who's gonna get golden medal, bronze medal and silver medal. I was at the age of 12-13 while watching, following and even taking notes to my notebook of the Laff-A-Lympics' Olympics records. The whole seasons of the Olympics have ended up with the top records from Yogi Yahooeys', with the most collected golden medals from Scooby-Doobies' and with the most collected bad reputation from Really Rottens in the final.

Among the whole cartoon character basis, my personal favourite is Snagglepuss, the announcer and the critic of the tournaments. I always wanted to be like him. Snagglepuss is also my personal superhero among the whole worldwide cartoons and comics ever since Disney. I copied his cool, smart, witty, cold-blooded, impressionist, dare-devilish and argumentatively judicial character to my own character. He made me laugh till I caught to cheek-stroke when he climbed to the top of the mount Everest to announce the start of the climbing race telling to the viewers that he'll be waiting with the photo-finish results to see whoever will come to the top first. Then at the finish when no one was able to climb to the top of the mountain he said to the camera, "You're lucky fellas our game is cancelled, our competitors will be racing one extra game today. But guess who the winner is? I am. I climbed here before they even started to climb". After this speech of him, my smile stayed frozen like a stroke on my cheeks at least a week. In every person's life there is a hero, an unusual hero which is easy to become like him. Snagglepuss was mine. Thanks to Daws Butler, the voice of Snagglepuss and actually thanks to his Turkish voice-over; and whoever has created him.

Laff-A-Lympics had educational value so much effectively that every time when the tournament came to its end and the show to the curtains down, he used to say things like "Don't forget to drink your milk fellas in your breakfast this morning" ./.. "Cheating is good, if no one sees you doing" ./... (Staring at the Hawaiian beach beauties)"Know the real use of sun-glasses? You can catch the best outstanding views and choose the most beautiful one on the first hand" ./.... (Before the scuba-diving contest)"Take a deep breath, it irritates fishes if they hear you breath underwater".

That was surely a top classic of the all-time cartoons. All along the year 1994-95 in Turkey, every Saturday and Sunday mornings; there was a reason to find the joy of being a secondary-school kid, increasing the volume of the telly, jumping and bouncing with the breathtaking activities and simulating whatever our cartoon heroes do.

Terrific concept, and a great show from my childhood
TheLittleSongbird12 May 2010
At 18, I grew up on the classic cartoons such as Scooby Doo, Wacky Races and Yogi Bear and I still do. I first came across Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics going through a Scooby Doo phase and after one episode I was hooked. The animation was surprisingly good, it was crisp, clean and smooth, and the music was great. The theme tune is simple in some ways but definitely memorable and not annoying. The writing is witty and hilarious, and while every episode derives from the admittedly terrific concept it was great to see how The Really Rottens resorted to cheating, who won each race(I found myself rooting for the Scooby Doobies) and what sort of things they did. The real joys were the characters though. Snagglepuss is a great commentator, I love his voice and his dialogue, and Mumbly's exasperated mumbles and facial expressions when the Really Rottens lost or were caught cheating are priceless. I also loved seeing Scooby, Captain Caveman, Yogi Bear and Dread Baron(who looks very like Dick Dastardly). The voice acting was also solid, I especially liked Mel Blanc's Captain Caveman, then again I may be biased as I love Mel Blanc. Overall, a great show from my childhood, and had a terrific concept. 10/10 Bethany Cox

One good cartoon from my youth
dagould198427 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This show was a spoof on the Olympic games. It features three teams Scooby Doobies, Yogi Yahooies, and the Really Rottens. They would compete in events that sometimes had a theme to them (water, round the world, etc). If a team placed in first they got 25 points, 15 for second place, and 10 for third place.

When I was a kid, this was a 'toon I always tuned in to see. I loved seeing my favorite cartoon characters compete in Olympic style games. Although it was pretty unfair at times while we do expect the villains (the Really Rottens) to cheat, the good guys (the Yahooies and Doobies) sometimes cheated more then the villains AND got away with it 95% of the time. At least the Rottens won the gold two times.

Oh and imo one of the reasons to watch was to see Daisy Mayhem of the Really Rottens. She was hot and voluptuous for a cartoon character back then.

Excellent Variety Show for Saturday Mornings
voicemaster714 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The biggest gathering imaginable was back in 1977 and 1978. ALl ABC needed on Saturday mornings were three variety shows, the Krofft Super Show, the SuperFriends, and this variety series. I never saw it as Scooby's All Star Laff a Lympics in its first year, but I heard the lineup consisted episodes of Scooby Doo and Dynomutt as well as 2 new shows, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angles. I don't think this series ran by itself on Saturday mornings, but it was fun to watch.

The Laff a Lympics was probably the biggest draw. A huge all star cast of Hanna Barbera favorites. The Yogi Yahooeys, the Scooby Doobies and the Really Rottens competing in competitions around the world. Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf were hosts of this series. The Yogis team consisted of the cartoon cartoon characters from the 60's. I always rooted for the Scooby's team because Blue Falcon and Dynomutt were on this team plus this was the team of comedy adventure characters. I'd say with the exception of Mumbly I'm betting the rest of the Really Rottens were made up for this show.

I never saw this series back in 1977, but I do remember seeing it when it was Scooby's All Stars in 1978. It consisted of the newer Scooby Doo episodes along with the Laff a Lympics and Captain Caveman shorts.

I miss this format and I'm hoping that WB will consider releasing the latter shorts, Laff a Lympics and Captain Caveman. Laff a Lympics is a series not to be missed. I love it whenever Mumbly grumbles after losing to the Scoobys and Yogis. WB needs to release this series on DVD.

Hanna-Barbera gives us their own Olympic games
SonicStuart16 September 2008
Hanna-Barbera never fails to entertain me. In this cartoon we have a variety of Hanna- Barbera cartoon characters competing in triple team olympic games and each week would have 2 different locations, one location in the first half and the other in the second half. The three teams were The Scooby Doobies (which consisted of many mystery solving or crime fighter Hanna-Barbera characters and lead by none other than Scooby-Doo, of course), The Yogi Yahooeys (which consisted of a lot of the earlier Hanna-Barbera characters and lead by Yogi Bear, of course) and The Really Rottens (which were mostly bad guy characters). The only thing that annoys me with this show is that for the Rottens team that they decided to put in Dread Baron and Mumbly instead of Dick Dastardly and Muttley, i mean why use their cheap resemblers instead of the real characters? Plus why is Mumbly on the Rottens team when he is supposed to be a good guy? Personally I would've put in Dick Dastardly and Muttley as the captain for the Rottens team not Dread Baron and Mumbly. This also one other thing that I would've changed about the show and that would be that there are a few Hanna- Barbera characters that were left out that I felt should've been included. Here the characters that were not in this show that I think should've been included and what team they could've been on as well and they are:

* Scrappy-Doo (could be on The Scooby Team, of course)

* Lippy The Lion & Hardy Har Har (could be on The Yogi Team)

* Touche Turtle & Dum-Dum (could be on The Yogi Team)

* Horseface Harry (he's Quick Draw's evil twin, could be on The Rottens Team)

* Secret Squirrel (he could be captain of a new team called The Secret Squirrelers)

* Magilla Gorilla (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Punkin Puss & Mushmouse (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Breezly & Sneezly (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Peter Potamus (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Yippee, Yappee & Yahooey (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-A-Long (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Atom Ant (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Squiddly Diddly (The Secret Squirrelers)

* Paw Rugg & Shagg Rugg (from The Hillbilly Bears, The Secret Squirrelers)

* Top Cat (could be a reporter with Snagglepuss & Mildew)

* Space Ghost, Jan & Jace (could be on The Scooby Team)

* Zorak (could be on The Rottens Team)

* Yellow Pinky (a bad guy from Secret Squirrel, could be on The Rottens Team)

But other than that it was good cartoon, Hanna-Barbera is the best.

Definite Guilty Pleasure With This One
richard.fuller13 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I actually can't believe I don't have a review for Laff-A-Lympics here yet.

It isn't a good cartoon. It wasn't then and it still isn't. As others have noted, it consisted of three teams.

In truth, the Yogi Yahooeys seemed like the 1960s Hanna Barbera team, the Scooby Doobies was the 1970s HB team and the Really Rottens consisted of the bad guys.

The promise was also 15 members on each team. The Yogis had 16 members (and by all account, the extra one was Grape Ape. Why was he on their team?), and the Scooby Doobies and Rottens each had 13 members.

I wanted to like this cartoon back then, I wanted to regard it as fun, but in truth, it wasn't. It was incredibly stale, and the animation isn't impressive either.

The comic books, published by Marvel comics, actually were better. Written by Mark Evanier (the man who would go on to create Scrappy Doo), they consisted more of adventures and the characters interacting with one another.

And there was a larger treasury edition, truly outstanding book, with the Yogis and the Rottens hurled thru time to Fred Flintstones era, where they had a stone age Laff-A-Lympics.

I think the biggest problem my brother and I had with the cartoon was it was Scooby's show, and there were countless times when the Yogis, who I always rooted for, would be disqualified for the silliest things, then the Scoobys would get a bonus 50 points simply for being the Scoobys.

One of the daffiest I recall was the sandcastle building competition. I think it was either Yogi or Doggy Daddy who built the wonderful sand castle, won the competition, then a wave came in and washed it away.

"Aw," said guest judge Fred Flinstone, "too bad. You lose." I thought, you gonna take the prize back from them like that? Another pitfall was Snaggle Puss and Mildew Wolf hosting. Based on the virtually non-existent exposure the rest of the characters got, today we do at least have the wonderful Snaggle Puss voice in this way, but we always felt that Snag belonged on Yogi's (already crowded) team and Mildew of course should have been on the Rottens.

Undeniably, the worst aspect was the Ranger Smith narrator. You have nearly 50 cartoon characters in a show, let them do the talking, not some unseen fellow who didn't have his own cartoon! Laff-A-Lympics would air their first fifteen minutes after a Scooby or Dynomutt adventure, then we would get the Captain Caveman cartoon, then a Dynomutt conclusion or something, then the Laff-A-Lympics finale. It was near impossible to sit there for that long to see who won.

I was stunned when years later, the cartoon would air devoid of Scooby, Dynomutt and Caveman adventures and learned it was only a 30 minute long commercial! Rarely did the show get off its routine track, but there was one where all three teams tied, when they raced to the moon.

30 years on, that is about the only distinction of the show, seeing what 'locales' the characters are competing in.

Cartoon Network's Robot Chicken show from Seth Green just aired a spoof of Spielberg's "Munich" with the Laff-A-Lympics characters, called "Laff-A-Munich".

I'm not sure which was the way to be; glad to see this cartoon not forgotten, or distressed to see Wally Gator and Doggy Daddy pleading for their lives, Quickdraw McGraw making a last-ditch heroic effort to no avail, and all of those forlorn expressions from Hong Kong Phooey.

Many a time, I would try to play Laff-A-Lympics with my toys, animals as one time, heroes as another, suddenly-designated villains as the third.

I wasn't very creative either. Still, it was fun trying.

All-Star Hilarity!!!
TVvuer696 April 2002
After Olympic fever swept the nations, especially in the United States during its bicentennial in 1976, a substitute was badly needed until the next Olympic Games in 1980. Fortunately, Hanna-Barbera provided the necessary relief in animated form with this terrific series. At least 45 of their classic cartoon characters were featured on this show competing for the gold medal. The All-Stars were divided into 3 teams. First are the Yogi Yahooeys, which featured Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, Huckleberry Hound, and other wacky animal characters featured in hundred of shorts that were first seen in the late 1950's to early 1960's. Second are the Scooby Doobies featuring (obviously) Scooby-Doo, his sidekicks Shaggy and Scooby-Dum, as well as their fellow crime fighters and mystery solvers (including superheroes Captain Caveman, Hong Kong Phooey, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt) whose shows debuted in the late 60's to early '70's. The Scoobys team was my personal favorite since I first saw their shows as a kid in this particular decade. Last and least, we have the Really Rottens, most of whom appeared only on this show. The only exception was team captain Mumbly, who was featured in "Mumbly, Relentless Detective", which was part of H-B's "Tom and Jerry Show" a couple of years earlier. Ironically, he was the good guy in that series, but here with the wrong crowd, Mumbly is particularly deceitful and conniving. Paired with teammate Dread Baron, they strike a strong resemblance to Dick Dastardly and Muttley from "The Wacky Races". If you've seen that show, you know they were just as diabolical. As a matter of fact, I can even recall at least a couple of Laff-A-Lympics where Mumbly was called Muttley. Is it possible that they're brothers (or even cousins)? They certainly have similar traits!

As for the show, the main objective for each team was to score the highest number of points to earn the gold medal. The majority of events had the simple scoring process of 25 points for the winner, 15 for second, and 10 for third place. There were occasional 50-point bonus events which could help a team get back into the competition or pull them away depending on whoever was trailing or leading at the time. Though some events were similar to real-life Olympic events, others were pretty offbeat and quite unusual, which likely means they could only be done in cartoons like this. Among the weird events were racing on ostriches, camels, kangaroos, rickshaws and unicycles, as well as more daring events like scavenging for creatures like vampires, the Abominable Snowman, and the Loch Ness Monster. With events like these, each Laff-A-Lympic was bound to be a major adventure!

While the Scooby and Yogi teams competed with flair and determination (and crazy hilarity), the Rottens always resorted to cheating and usually sabotaged their opponents' efforts to win. However, with rules and regulations in place, they very rarely got away with their dirty deeds. In some cases, they suffered point deductions if their efforts went too far. So it was no surprise that they usually ended up as the third place bronze medalists. But unlike Dastardly and Muttley from the aforementioned Wacky Races, the Rottens actually did win at least a couple of Laff-A-Lympics. It just goes to show that even the down-and-out group will eventually have their day if they keep trying.

Overall, this was a very entertaining show to watch as a kid (and even an adult). This show was the perfect venue to showcase Hanna-Barbera's All-Stars. Since the real Olympics bring the nations of the world together, "Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics" brought many of H-B's characters in the same environment. Though some individual cartoons allowed for a few cameos from other characters, this was about the only show where members of Yogi's and Scooby's teams could interact with each other. This concept was nothing but pure genius from the minds of William Hanna and Joe Barbera!

all the crappy Hanna-Barbera stars in one boring package
planktonrules17 June 2006
Okay,...I'll admit it. I hold a grudge against Hanna-Barbera Productions for doing so much to lower the standards for Saturday morning cartoons. Instead of the very high quality of the earlier Warner Brothers cartoons or even their own Tom and Jery cartoons of the 40s and 50s (yes, Hanna and Barbera first worked on excellent Tom and Jerry cartoons until MGM stupidly fired them and replaced them with cheap hacks), the Hanna-Barbera shows of the 60s and 70s were lousy all around--with rotten animation and writing most 12 year-olds would be ashamed to call their own. They KNEW HOW TO MAKE GREAT CARTOONS BUT GAVE IN TO THE DRAW OF FAST MONEY! So, gone were the high production values and they were replaced with crap like this! YOGI'S LAUGH OLYMPICS was a truly awful show that was sort of like combining THE WACKY RACERS with THE YOGI BEAR SHOW. Every episode was nearly alike and the show was only watchable by extremely young children. Anyone else would surely be bored.

Great Hanna-Barbera show
frenchhorn72717 July 2001
If you like old cartoons, this one is is perfect for you. It features mostly all of the Hanna-Barbera characters in an "Olympic" style setting. There are 3 teams: The Yogi Bear's, the Scooby Dooby's, and the Really Rottons. Each episode, the individual teams try to win enough events to get the gold metal. The Really Rottons hardly ever win, because they mainly resort to cheating. If you like old Hanna-Barbera cartoons, check this one out. I think it may still be playing on Cartoon Network.

Not to mention beautiful! Most of the characters in this show are hilarious like the Looney Tunes characters that we all love. in My opinion these characters are the funnies and talented ever seen. In fact, The things that goes on in this series' cartoons are in My opinion nuts which that is what makes them hilarious! There are so many to like and laugh at and the silly things they do! If you like the original Looney Tunes then I strongly recommend that you watch this show!
