Politics and love - fortunately, there's more of the latter...
Peter_Young27 September 2009
I generally avoid films about politics, because I find that most of them are stereotypical and one-sided, but this one is directed by Gulzar so it can be nothing but excellent. I followed this belief of mine, and I was not disappointed. Aandhi is not at all a film about politics. Politics is just a part of the story, it's just a profession of a woman in this film, which is used to show her power and to show how a profession of this kind may trouble a woman's personal life. This is a film about love, marriage, romance, human nature, pride, separation, ego, forgiveness and reconciliation (in chronological order).

Aandhi is about Aarti, a woman of strong character who has ambitions to become a politician like her dad. She falls for a common hotel manager named JK, and decides to tie the knot with him, much to the displeasure of her father. After marriage, Aarti tries her best to balance between her political work and responsibility as a wife/mother. However, as time goes by JK feels he becomes inferior to her even at home. Differences lead to intense arguments and subsequently to a break up. Many years later they meet again when she is already a big political leader. And a new relationship begins as they reminisce their life together.

I was completely engaged by Gulzar's superb direction, his extraordinary story-telling, and his realistic portrayal of human relationships. We see neither bitterness nor anger between Aarti and JK, but only a renewed and mature relationship based on understanding and fond memories. The film is extremely well-written, so are the characters. The story unfolds interestingly through flashbacks and the connection between the past and the present is brilliantly displayed in the film. There is a very impressive attention the director pays to details. Gulzar's dialogues are exceptional, and he writes beautiful lyrics to the songs.

Suchitra Sen and Sanjeev Kumar give two powerful performances. Sen is astonishing as Aarti. We see so many sides of her personality, and this difficult role is played with complete ease and precision by this phenomenal actress, including dialogue delivery and body language. This is a performance with a great mix of toughness and vulnerability. Sen displays both coolness and a pinch of arrogance while playing the strong politician, yet convincingly switches it with warmth and cordiality when she becomes a suffering woman or a wife. The ever-great Sanjeev Kumar is (unsurprisingly) nothing short of excellent. This is another outstanding performance this unforgettable actor added to his vast repertoire.

The film is both a drama and a romance, and one aspect that significantly contributes to this is RD Bruman's fantastic soundtrack. "Is Mod Pe Jaate Hain", "Tum Aa Gaye Ho" are wonderful songs, but the one that makes the greatest impact is "Tere Bina Zindagi Se Joi", for its melodious tunes, fantastic lyrics, but most importantly for the amazing scenes it carries. I consider the sequences shown through this song the best scenes of the film. They show moments of interaction and painful feelings of missing. These are poignant and memorable moments, and the same can be said about the film itself. Aandhi is a gem. That's it.

The story of Indira Gandhi?
peanutz4548 November 2005
They say Aandhi is based on the life of India's first woman Prime Minister, India's Iron Lady - Indira Gandhi. Maybe it is true, maybe it is not. If it is, then Indira Gandhi should have been happy about the way she has been presented.

Indira Priyadarshani Gandhi was daughter of India's first Prime Minister, Nehru. She fell in love with Feroze Gandhi (a young politician born as Feroze Sopariwala) and they had two children (the younger of which went on the become the third Prime minister from the family). Their married life was not very successful, was it because of Indira's father's political ambitions (that Feroze a respected and righteous politicians interfered with) or because of some personal reasons is hard to guess, though several speculations do exist (especially from pro RSS historians who use any means to tarnish the name of the politically influential Gandhi family), and Feroze & Indira started living separately. Before he died Feroze had a heart attack, and Indira and he were re-united till his death a short time later.

There are parallels with Indira Gandhi's life in Aandhi. But mostly the story is very different. It is hard to imagine how Gulzar came out with a movie like Aandhi when Indira Gandhi had imposed an emergency in India during that time. If my memory serves me right I even heard it was banned for sometime.

The female protagonist Aarti Devi (Suchitrra Sen) is daughter of a politician and she falls in love with a Hotel Manager (Sanjeev Kumar). She does have a strong personality. There marriage is broken but that is about it (with respect to similarities).

I love the movie because of the strong performances by Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen and the direction of Gulzar. Gulzar's recent movies have been very politically opinionated but Aandhi even though it is set in a political setting is not much about about politics itself. Primarily it is about re-discovery of love in a broken marriage.

We travel back and forth in time to find about the past and present of the couple, we even find that they still have feeling for each other but it is the dirty political games and the interventionist attitude of the public and the press that forces them to face and brings out the truth about there lives.

great movie - a definite must-watch
tnkcool7 January 2006
Aandhi is a classic. A movie based on human emotions - and the struggle of two individuals who meet, fall in love and then drift apart only to meet again after many years. If my memory serves me well, I even believe that the female lead has elements of Indira Gandhi in her. A must-watch in order to understand Indian traditions and politics. Suchitra Sen is a rich politician's daughter who falls in love with a hotel manager, and marries him, against her father's wishes. They start a new life until Suchitra decides to follow her father and join politics, much against her husband's better judgement. The toils and troubles of a hectic political lifestyle results in their daughter's death and their divorce - leading them to pursue different directions in life for many odd years. Finally, the two meet again, after many years. A very sensitive movie - with well crafted lyrics and beautiful performances. I give it a 9.5 due to Sanjay Kumar's performance, the music and the trouble the movie had as it was released during the emergency.

The First Controversial Film
milind15 June 1999
Gulzar's most controversial film made. This film was released in 1975 during "The Emergency". Supposedly inspired from the life of India's late prime minister, Indira Gandhi. The film was stuck and also banned by political activists of Indira Gandhi's Party. Suchitra Sen gives a powerful performance as a housewife who marries a common hotel manager (Sanjeev Kumar)against her father's wish. She then joins Politics against her husbands wish. Sanjeev Kumar got the best actor award for this film. So did gulzar. The best scene in the movie and one of Indian Cinema's most touching scene is the scene picturised on the song " Tere Bina Zindagi se Koi..". This is a Classic movie. It is a must see. This movie was a hit when there

were 2 giant movies in competition.. "Deewar" and "Sholay".

Great Direction by Gulzar !!!
Umar Mansoor Bajwa7 February 2006
This movie might have a directional setting towards the political and private life of India's Prime Minister, Indra Gandhi, nonetheless, its powerful and sentimental theme carries the audience with the subtle forces of life which all and sundry experience, at least, one or the other times in their married lives.

Gulzar has excellently directed the movie while adorning it with passionately electrifying emotional focus during certain scenes. The musical score and songs are worthy of all praise. The hypnotically tranquil appeal of the song "Tere Bina Zindagi se Shikwa" speaks volumes about the meaningful and touching melody besides its filming against the gloomy backdrop of a ruined historical monument in a moonlit night. Much different from the rubbish artificiality of present day movies, the songs of this film exude a living originality to the flow of events.

Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen both have given their lifetime best performances and Gulzar earned a big name with its release. It is definitely a must-see film.

Towering performances
AvinashPatalay11 December 2009
If not anything, every time I manage to catch a song or a glimpse from "Aandhi"on telly, it makes me stop doing everything and take notice. Every frame of "Aandhi" deserves the "Bible" for acting status. It is next to impossible to judge who was outdoing whom - Sanjeev Kumar or Suchitra Sen. Safe to say, both neatly complimented each other.

Amongst all the movies Gulzar held the reigns of direction "Aandhi" gets the top position. The narrative in the form of flashbacks keeps it crisp and the audience intrigued. I seriously doubt if "Aandhi" deserved the due recognition it deserved when it was released. I surely have read about the reference to Indira Gandhi's political career leading to the ban, but I wonder if fuelled the fire to speculation or worked against it I am not too sure. And another thing, political themes haven't worked quite well owing to the dry subject and the lack of succulence, however Gulzar manages to calibrate it to perfection for the audience without going over-board.

Gulzar/ Hari Bhai/ R D Burman was a winning combination every time they huddled up and "Aandhi" is no exception. Lyrics penned by Gulzar, mystical as usual were elevated to great heights by the music to R D Burman. The composition are still fresh as they were two decades ago.

Noteworthy is the couple's daughter "Munna" who is never shown in the audience and is restricted to a reference in big scheme of things, which in my opinion is the art of fine film-making.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" is reserved fiery delivery in the last frames by Suchitra. Sen. Noteworthy is the ending which cannot be more apt.

Suchitra Does A Master Class
uncle_g123411 December 2006
I knew next to nothing about Suchitra Sen. But I knew and loved her daughter, Raima. So that made me wonder about the recluse mother. I don't know how I found this movie, but somehow the name came to me and I rented it. What a find! Suchitra is irresistible as Aartidevi. Those luminous soulful eyes. That restrained but emotional performance. I was totally seduced. I don't often bond with old movies. I found Mughal-e-Azam beautiful because of Madhubala and the way she was presented. And I feel the same way about this movie. The startling thing is how close to the end of Suchitra's career this was. In one way, it makes sense, since she's bringing everything she's learned to this role. But on the other side, when do you get to see an Indian actress play this kind of role at that point in her life? All over the world, senior actresses are forced to retreat into the background while the juicy parts go to the younger women. But here Suchitra got an excellent part and did it full justice. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is irked by the discrimination against the senior actress. Suchitra shows what we are missing because of that.

Politics And Love

Review By Kamal K

Absolutely , the movie is a piece of gem. Apart form songs , the theme of the film and its superb execution in all respect are unparallel . So far, actings are concerned, sanjeev kumar and suchitra sen are simply superb and at their best. Suchitra sen is known to be the Mahaniaka of Bengali cinema for all times but her performance in this Hindi film, showed her exceptional talent in all kinds of film even in Hindi .

Rated classic from past is a silly sexist damp squib
chengiz28 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The aandhi (storm) in this movie is a controversy - lasting about ten minutes in film time - that erupts during an election, where a woman candidate is character-assassinated for being seen walking with a man (no not a euphemism, but the literal truth). The storm is resolved when it is revealed (not to us, we already know, but to the electorate) that... drumroll... HE IS HER HUSBAND! Then she wins the election! The storm was evidently of the teacup variety.

The acting is kinda wooden by Sen though she looks good in the role; her Hindi accent and diction are terrible. Sanjiv Kumar is good but his character is basically boring, he could do this role sleepwalking. Om Prakash is good and the only character in this film who is not boring to watch.

Gulzar is a very good poet but not a filmmaker - his direction falls short. There are some overlong scenes with uncertain pauses, and things that would have been useful to show to not make the movie drag so much are not shown (wouldnt it have been nice to at least have a scene with the daughter and explore the mom leaving her with the dad?). Oh and forget how somehow no one knows that a popular politician and daughter of a famous businessman has had a husband and child in her past. There's also the small things. In one scene, Sen is facing the camera gesturing at Om Prakash with her right hand, and then the camera angle changes to her back and the hand changes to her left.

The movie insists that both husband and wife are equally responsible for the break up etc, but really the Sanjiv Kumar character goes thru the movie insisting upon his dues as the husband. This dynamic is realistic for the times, but is dated now. And even for those days the touching his feet at the end was uncalled for. Movies such as this make me realize how good it is that India has liberalized over the years.

Marriage to a simpleton or Career in politics?
Chrysanthepop4 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Gulzar's amazing classic 'Aandhi' explores the relationship between JK (a simple hotel manager) and Aarti (an oxford graduate ambitious for politics). While we see that Aarti does love JK, her father keeps pressuring her to focus on politics and she too feels a social responsibility towards the public. JK disapproves of her political ambition and eventually this leads to a split up. We see JK as someone who likes things the way they are and prefers a simple life with a wife who would take care of the household.

Gulzar is one of the master story tellers of Indian Cinema. Here he does a fantastic job as he unfolds his story and presents his characters. The songs are beautiful. No wonder they are still remembered today. Gulzar couldn't have picked better actors to play Aarti and J.K. Suchitra Sen is a complete natural and can always be counted on to deliver a fine performance. Ditto for Sanjeev Kumar. The two share an amazing chemistry.

Coming back to the plot, during the argument scene with Aarti, JK tells her not to be the husband but to behave like a wife. While JK may be a little old fashioned in his thinking, this may be what prompted Aarti to leave. We do see that she tries to balance both her family life and her career. On the one hand her father pressures her to focus on her career and on the other hand her husband would rather have her give up her ambitions. Aarti makes the choice to devote herself to the public.

Years later she sees what she's missed out on and she expresses to JK about her willing to be there for the family. But, JK is aware that the public wants her and he allows (maybe insists) that she stick to her career. Yet, the two choose to live separate lives, in spite of their love for one another.

The storm that brings together our past and present
ridi-arahan17 July 2020
What makes Aandhi a beautiful watch is the performances by the lead characters. It's a well made movie with beautiful songs, screenplay and direction. The movie revolves and rotates in the past and present giving equal focus of what happened and how things are the way they are.Beneath all the politics , ambition and career goals lies a part of us who crave for our relationship, loved ones. One aspect that I would have been happier with is the scenes with the political agendas. They can be cut down, at least some of them.

B. O. R. I. N. G. Good actors but what a waste of time. One great song. And an absolute unlawful act to give sanjeev kumar best actor award in this given the runner up was mighty Big B in Deewar. I love SK but this is no award worthy act.
