Everyone’s heard the famous maxim, generally accredited to legendary music producer Brian Eno: while the Velvet Underground’s debut, The Velvet Underground & Nico, sold a paltry 30,000 copies upon release in 1967, every person who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band. Though a slight exaggeration, the line is a testament to the album’s far-reaching influence trumping its commercial failure. Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen Tucker merged raw rock and roll with musique concrète and the avant-garde to create an untamed and menacing sound that perfectly underscored their poetic tales of drug deals, sadomasochistic sex...

Back in 2014, occult detective John Constantine leapt from the comic book page to the small screen in NBC's Constantine TV series. While the show only lasted one season, it garnered a loyal following of fans who can enjoy the series in its entirety this October when Warner Archive Collection and DC Entertainment release Constantine: The Complete Series on Blu-ray and DVD:

This article originally appeared in the September 18, 2003 issue of New York Magazine. Around the end of 1966, my then manager, Ken Pitt, came back from a trip to the U.S. with two albums he had been given in New York. Since they weren’t particularly his cup of tea, he gave them to me to see what I made of them. The first was a great, rollicking, noisy anarchist-hippie affair by the Fugs — more fun than was healthy, and great drinking-and-getting-stoned music. The second, a test pressing with the signature warhol scrawled on it, was shattering. Everything I both felt and didn’t know about rock music was opened to me on one unreleased disc. It was The Velvet Underground and Nico. The first track glided by innocuously enough and didn’t register. However, from that point on, with the opening, throbbing, sarcastic bass and guitar of “I’m Waiting For the Man,...

★★★★☆ "Up to Lexington, 125 / Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive." Lou Reed's words I'm Waiting For the Man by The Velvet Underground are how many will have been introduced to the notorious corner joining 125th and Lexington Ave. Where that song told of an outsider's trip to Harlem to buy drugs, Khalik Allah’s innovative new documentary, Field Niggas (2015) tries to give a voice to those whose lives are spent on that corner. It's a hallucinatory photo-journalistic katabasis into the harsh, nocturnal world of the disenfranchised.

Following Matt Ryan’s guest role in Arrow season 4, a new Change.org petition to save Constantine has appeared…
Matt Ryan’s winning guest star turn in Arrow season 4 (see: episode 5, Haunted) has revived fan interest in his televised take on DC/Vertigo Comics character John Constantine.
A new ‘Save Constantine’ petition has now appeared on Change.org, aiming to lobby any network that will listen into bringing back the series that NBC unceremoniously binned a few months ago.
“On November 4th, 2015, it was proved that the Constantine fanbase is still very much alive as evidenced by the reception to the character's appearance on the fifth episode of Arrow's fourth season,” the petition states, before listing some potential suitors for the series.
Arrow’s home network, The CW, is top of the list, which also goes on to suggest Netflix, Yahoo, The El Rey Network and...

Constantine showrunner Daniel Cerone will pitch season 2 to NBC in May, the show isn't cancelled yet, he says...
When the hoped-for 'back nine' order didn't arrive for NBC's Constantine, which recently concluded its first thirteen-episode season, the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Hellblazer adaptation. Not so, says showrunner Daniel Cerone, there's still hope that the man in the mac might return to TV.
Asked on Twitter if the show could be considered "technically cancelled", Cerone replied:
"NBC made some early pickups but #Constantine not canceled. We'll pitch them our plans for 2nd season in May. Then they decide."
All is not lost then. Despite Constantine's ratings not quite hitting NBC's mark for such an effects (and therefore budget) heavy show, there's still hope for a season two renewal according to Cerone.
How can fans help the matter? Stream the available episodes and tell your friends,...

Constantine, Season 1, Episodes 11 to 13
Airs Friday at 8 Pm Et on NBC
Just in time for its first season finale, Constantine develops both its side characters, like Manny the once annoying angel (Harold Perrineau), who is the real star of the penultimate episode “Angels and Ministers of Grace”, and Jim Corrigan (Emmet Scanlan), who plays a big role in the finale and main cast. The writers finally get to show John Constantine’s (Matt Ryan) smoking habit, and continue to look into his mix of passive and active responses to the Rising Darkness, and have Zed (Angelica Celaya) struggle with her visions in a physical and spiritual way while building friendships with Corrigan and Manny.
However, for all its character growth and exploration, Constantine is pretty content with being a case of the week supernatural show, with minimal connective tissue between the episodes, even if the finale does pull a couple...

If season 1 finale Waiting For The Man turns out to be Constantine's last ever episode, it would be an enormous waste...
This review contains spoilers.
1.13 Waiting For The Man
The Constantine team must have been optimistic about getting its back nine episodes picked up, because Waiting For The Man has few of the trappings of a finale. It does bring two major players, Papa Midnite and Jim Corrigan, back on the scene, and it moves the show’s overarching plot forward a bit more than your average episode. But at its core this is another monster-of-the-week offering, without the high drama that gives a finale its… well, finality. This flaw has more to do with the business of making a TV show than it does with the artistic side of things. But it’s a shame, because this could be Constantine’s last episode.
There’s a lot going on this week,...

There’s a moment, almost midway through Constantine‘s Season 1 — and quite possibly series — finale, when the irreverent exorcist reminds Zed that there’s only one sure thing in life: It ends.
“We can all shape our destiny, but none of us get to escape our fate,” he says. “So when my time’s up, that’s it.”
It’s a fitting quote for the last episode of what likely will be the supernatural series’ only season. Let’s review what happens in the rest of the episode, titled “Waiting for the Man,” then you’ll weigh with what you thought of the hour.

NBC's "Constantine" wraps up its 13-episode first season on Friday (February 13) with an episode titled "Waiting for the Man," which promises the return of Papa Midnite and Jim Corrigan, plus some new information about the Rising Darkness. Although "Constantine" has struggled with low ratings in multiple time Friday periods and NBC opted not to order a back-nine, all involved parties are still referring to Friday's episode as a "season" finale and there have been more than a few [entirely unsubstantiated] rumors about steps that might be taken to keep the DC Comics adaptation around for a Season 2. I chatted with "Constantine" star Matt Ryan on Thursday afternoon and Ryan is hopeful. Very. "I am very, very, very hopeful," he told me. "Obviously he's such an amazing character and I feel like we've got so far to go with it. I think there's so much potential with the series, with the source material,...

In 1972, a couple of years after the Velvet Underground imploded, Lou Reed, struggling to latch onto his identity as a solo artist, kicked off a period of rapid-fire image transformation roughly parallel to the more high-profile one that David Bowie was enacting. For three or four years, Reed tried on his outlaw personas like costumes from hell (Iggy-ish gutter hunk, kohl-eyed leather-bar rock & roll animal, cropped-blond ambisexual mannequin). It was his way of tapping into the liberating boundary-bashing of the post-’60s wasteland. During that period, Reed tried to live up to the ideal of being a “transformer” (the title of his second,...

London — Rock icon Lou Reed is recovering after a life-saving liver transplant in the U.S., according to an interview with his wife published Saturday in a British newspaper.
Laurie Anderson told the Times of London that Reed "was dying" before the operation several weeks ago at Ohio's Cleveland Clinic.
She said 71-year-old Reed isn't back to full strength, but "he's already working and doing t'ai chi.
"I don't think he'll every totally recover from this, but he'll certainly be back to doing (things) in a few months," she said.
"I'm very happy. It's a new life for him."
Anderson, a musician and performance artist, praised the Cleveland facility – one of the leading transplant centers in the U.S. – and said hospitals in the couple's hometown of New York were "dysfunctional."

You may have read the news recently about Moe Tucker speaking at a Tea Party gathering in Georgia. It's somewhat shocking considering the legacy of the Velvet Underground, and the literary, often difficult music they made. They were pioneers, sailors on a great big clipper ship, plying the seas of late 60's counter culture. When everyone else was wearing tie-dyes, they dressed all in black and sang about masochism.
Still, what struck me more than an aged, right-leaning Moe Tucker -- who never dug "that love and peace shit" anyway -- are the buffoons coming out of the woodwork to rejoice about it. Maybe you read some of their comments on the web, perhaps even here where the Big Hollywood devotees chose to pick on little old IFC. Yes, right wing mouthpieces, Big Hollywood and Fox are both giddy over it.
These Tea Party people praise themselves, and Moe, as...
