Initially, producer Emile Sherman wanted actor Ben Mendelsohnto play the character of Andy who in the end was portrayed by actor Simon Lyndon. Writer-director Clinton Smith said: "But he always gets blokey roles so I wanted to cast him against type and he just fell in love with this camp goth, glam punk character."
Actress Kylie Minogue and actor Ben Mendelsohn had both previously worked on two Australian television series, Neighbours (1985) and The Henderson Kids (1985), as well as the Australian TV mini-series Fame and Misfortune (1986).
