The real deal behind "Metallimania"
metal_inquisitor66621 September 2008
A lot of people just do not understand this DVD. Some say it is stupid, made by Metallica-haters. Others think it is a true portrait of the band. I guess that this is a matter of opinion (there can never be a true portrait of a band/person).

Fact is that every review I have read so far comes from people who are fans, and therefore react in a certain way to this DVD, but do not seem to get the "joke".

I came across this information while surfing around

"In the past, Braverman had written many articles lampooning METALLICA for "So What", the group's official fan club magazine. "The guys in METALLICA have always appreciated our small contribution to their legacy, which was making fun of them and their fans," he says. "But because the movie plays on the myths of METALLICA — Are they total alcoholics? Are they Satanists? Is Lars Ulrich that much of a dick? Is James Hetfield really that intimidating? What planet is Kirk really from? — it was felt by the band's Hitleresque management that the fans wouldn't get a film that made the band look ridiculous. In retrospect, it's hard to imagine a film that could make METALLICA look more ridiculous than 'Some Kind of Monster'.""

So, basically we have a mockumentary made by 2 friends of the band with the bands' permission, as you can read in the following paragraph quoted from the same article as the first quote.

"Uniquely qualified to bring you this story are Marc Paschke, one of the few intimates who's flown around the world with the band on its private jet, and Eric Braverman, onetime radio DJ and manager of FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, and best man at Jason Newsted's wedding. But Paschke and Braverman didn't just follow around METALLICA and its nutty fans. "We kind of went after them," says Braverman, laughing."

Now, with this in mind it is way easier to actually enjoy this DVD. The band can laugh about themselves and we should be able to adopt that attitude. This is not about the band, it is not about the music. It is just a "bad" joke. Some people love bad jokes, others don't.

Rating? Tough one....I do enjoy this because it is different, however you do not watch this DVD over and over again. I'd give it an 8, it was refreshing and unique.....but the joke gets old really fast.

The real Metallica...
wickershambros25 May 2005
Captures Metallica at their true peak. The interviewer pursues the relationship between the band and their fans, and it's all no holds barred. It's always funny to me to watch people shell out money for a ticket, then bad mouth the band, especially when they are drunk and probably failed their GED. Guerrilla style but without censor. A few sound issues here and there but it doesn't upset the flow. If you have seen Some Kind of Monster and felt empty inside, this one might fill you up. Not sure who the interviewer is, but he looks really familiar and they all seem like they know him, maybe he was in one of the other Metallica doc's (Cliff 'em All?). Great r'n'r movie!

Metallica's music is entertaining but this film is NOT
Joe-Kenneth-Eggett22 January 2021
Although I will admit that there are some scenes which could be considered mildly humorous, this so called "documentary" is a joke.

This is quite literally the worst documentary film I have ever watched.

No disrespect to Metallica fans, but this film isn't truly worthy of being considered "entertainment."

You will laugh at this film, but not in a good way.

"Metallimania" is Trash.

Metallica Fans are Stupid!!!!
Paulbg200018 May 2009
That's what this documentary paints a picture of. The entire documentary is fans talking about the band just before the peak of their career. Most of the fans are drunk, stoned and like screaming and yelling. The interviewer keeps asking fans their opinions of the band and then asks them a question about world issues which of course makes them come off as idiotic. He also insists on interviewing fans who are too drunk to give a comprehensive answer. This is 109 minutes of drunks people repeating the same pointless information over and over again. "I'd kill my whole family to meet Metallica"...."I'd eat his dead family to see Metallica" is this serious? The host enjoys making fun of the fans and has a weird obsession with Rwanda and could definitely have made it a lot better with some basic interviewing skills..."Metallica Fans...Sanitary Department Hopefulls tomorrow" Hahaha...funny!

I wonder how the fans bashing Suicidal Tendencies think about the band now that Trujillo is in the band.

This is a frail attempt at film making, it's a grainy video transfer, has bad audio on it, flash flames of black from bad editing...a pretty poor attempt. Top it off with the fact that the band doesn't appear in the video at all.

Overall, this is just bad...I wouldn't recommend it to anyone even real fans of the band. You will just get upset over the negative portrayal it paints of the band and it's effect on people.
