The Things Men Do For Women!
ccthemovieman-110 May 2007
Beware of any romantic partner who says, "If you love me, you'll......" No, it's a not a bad trying to get in bed with this girlfriend but here, Felix's girlfriend asking him to climb 40,000 feet to get a flower in place of the ones he gave her!

Felix, the poor sap, wants to prove his love so he attempts the rocky climb. Along the way, he has a very funny confrontation with a bear, a vulture, some sort of mountain lion and two more with the same bear, who keeps coming back! All of this is to get one flower the woman insisted on, rather than the bouquet Felix offered her.

As you could tell with the title of this 'toon, his efforts are going to be in the vain for this woman. A so-so effort, the final cartoon in this "Felix The Cat - The Otto Messmer Years" DVD. In all, this is worth buying if you have a collection of cartoons. I mean, how many silent film cartoons are available, and with the creativity of Felix the Cat?

I think this cartoon really IS under 4 minutes in length!

I was very surprised when I found this cartoon on YouTube. No, I wasn't surprised to find an old Felix the Cat toon--there are tons of them on YouTube. However, this one clocks in at 3 minutes and 40 seconds-- and I assumed it must be a truncated version of a longer cartoon. Well, after seeing it, I really do think that's the original length...which is odd, because most Felix cartoons are about 7 minutes in length.

Felix's white cat girlfriend is in a surly mood and no matter what Felix does she doesn't relent. Finally, she demands Felix scale a 40,000 foot peak* and bring her a flower. Felix foolishly agrees and again and again he's attacked by various creatures on his trek. What happens when he finally returns? See this cartoon.

This is clever and short...and well worth seeing if you appreciate old silent cartoons.

*By the way, if you care, the highest peak on Earth is Mt. Everest at only a little over 29,000 feet.

Characteristic Felix toon.

Filling up ten lines about this one reel silent cartoon is quite an exercise.

FELIX FINDS 'EM FICKLE is characteristic of the period when these were being rolled off on a regular basis and the character was the most enjoyed in animated movies, world wide. It is not the best or the worst of them.

The plot has the amiable feline out romancing his white cat counterpart (what the Mrs. Felix who turns up in some of these would have to say is speculative.) The sullen squeeze demands a flower from the top of the mountain, so up he goes, the odd shapes he climbs on proving, as usual, to be bears, an eagle and the rest. Even his success doesn't content white cat. Usual excellent design and animation.

You could take some satisfaction from the lack of political correctness shown half a century before we heard the term.
