A masterful mix of joy and sadness and how things always end up well
frans_emil1 August 2005
Unemployment was a topical subject (well, it always is) at the time when this movie was released. As Kaurismäki's approach is more refined when speaking about the subject, Piirainen uses comedy as a way to show what's wrong in society. The hungry queue at the start of the movie is a sad sight but when these two fellows (Lehtinen and Koivula) start to act, one will find lots of fun about ordinary life.

Kokki and Rane start a cleaning business and they buy a cleaning machine (a unique one, as they express it). They have to live without apartment. But Rane has lots of "visions" how to get more money and how to feed his family. They meet some other unemployment and show them how things get OK.

These two guys seem to be simple kind of guys when they have adventures with the cleaning business. But after all, innocence is the thing that appeals to audience. This movie gives hope.

A great comedy of optimism and self-confidence.

Two born losers start a cleaning business. First, they have to travel all the way to Stockholm to buy one of a kind superhyper cleaning machine ('Tällaista ei ole muilla'). They are so convinced of their succes that even the fact that they live in Kokki's van, doesn't bring them down.

On their way to success there are many (funny) struggles and some killer slogans.

Rubbish that cannot be cleaned

The story itself is a good idea, but the plot and the screen writing spoils it all. Nothing wrong with acting, but the actors only try to save a script that cannot be saved.

As an example, why there are so many news reporters with video cameras in such places where they should not be and at such time.

Much time is spent on non-relevant issues. That is to say that it is a joke prolonged to a film.

A fine example where a good idea in one's head, goes bad in the first version on a paper and gets worse and worse in the development process.

On the other hand, a good example to study, where things went all that wrong.
