Excellent golden age flick
knucklebreather7 December 2009
When it comes to big budget porn films, Suzie Superstar has a lot to offer. It's a very fun movie with some good sex scenes. The intentional humor is funny, and it works well as a laughably bad movie in places, especially during the music scenes. Good god is that some horrible music, and what on earth is going on with the keyboard player?

But this movie is definitely bad in a good way. It's a real look at what a porno can be if the cast has some fun and gets to spend at least a few bucks.

Even with the sex scenes, most are done quite well, adding something new and interesting rather than just doing 5 minutes of generic porno sex. The non-sex scenes tend to add to the sexual energy, creating a bit of a back story to why the characters are having sex that often enhances the actual sex scene.

Ultimately, this is just a fun movie. One of the better porno-with-a-plot films I've ever seen.

Shauna Superstar
Nodriesrespect9 May 2008
Even though the late Gary Graver a/k/a porn's own "Robert McCallum", who sadly passed away from cancer in 2006, has made quite a few more accomplished adult movies than this (think THE ECSTASY GIRLS or V - THE HOT ONE), this still represents something of a landmark in the genre's time line. Main reason for this is the presence of the equally late and lamented Shauna Grant (real name : Colleen Applegate, apparently no relation to lookalike mainstream actress Christina) whose breathtaking appearance was always enough of an excuse to check out anything she was in. Another reason, if any were needed, would be the palpable erotic intensity that marks the movie's many well-done sexual encounters. But hey, a single glance at its cast list must have already convinced those in the know that this is no amateur show to begin with.

Singing sensation Suzie Mitchell (Shauna at her most sweetly succulent) wants to get out from under her contract with way too hands on manager Z.W. McCain (a typically professional John Leslie mixing menace with smarmy charm to excellent effect) and finds a private performance at the birthday party of notorious godfather Loducca (Ross Roberts) just might provide the ticket if she plays her cards right. Though immersed knee-deep in criminal activities, the mob boss proves to be something of a prude when it comes to his adored daughter Angela, engagingly portrayed by the meltingly gorgeous Laura Lazare who would go on to star in Chris Warfield's unjustly overlooked PURELY PHYSICAL. Once Z.W. lets his little head do the thinking and commits the unforgivable error of getting into hot water - literally, it's a jacuzzi ! - with the admittedly hard to resist Angela, Suzie turns to blackmail as a means to retrieving both artistic and personal freedom. Thuddingly predictable though competently written, at least on a porno scale,

SUZIE SUPERSTAR is saved in its entirety by the consummate lovemaking skills of its impressive roster of performers. Shauna's sensational looks go a long way towards compensating for her shaky thespian prowess. Her idealized romantic number with stalwart Joey Silvera has been singled out by dearly departed genre critic cum filmmaker Jim Holliday - is it just me, or is this starting to look like porno graveyard ? - as best of show, even though I personally prefer their coupling from Bob Chinn's delightful THE YOUNG LIKE IT HOT. She does manage to project a credible amount of resentment with Leslie and Best Supporting Actor award-winner Ron Jeremy as his idiot henchman whose mind along with a more prurient part of his anatomy she blows as part of her escape plan. Also worthy of considerable fan boy attention are AIM Health founder (making her a true life saver, providing much needed HIV testing for people employed by this industry) and ever eloquent spokesperson Sharon Mitchell in a snappy shower set-up with Leslie and the daunting duo of Laurie Smith (who proved she could act as well as fornicate in Howard Winters' both intimately and intellectually stimulating SNAKE EYES) and Gayle Sterling (Romeo's insatiable Juliet in Edwin Durell's formidable IRRESISTIBLE) as no holds barred groupie girls thoroughly depleting Jeremy to gain backstage access.

Production's every bit as smooth as Graver had made viewers accustomed to by this stage of his distinguished career, his own sparkling cinematography a predictable standout along with a fine original song-packed soundtrack, expertly lip-synced by both Shauna and Mitch. Though the director may have been slightly under-performing on this assignment, it's still head and shoulders above the sorry sequels that were to follow, Graver's own first attempt coming off as the most head-scratching inept of a bathetic bunch, presence of fan favorites such as Ginger Lynn, Heather Wayne and the scandalous Ms. Traci Lords notwithstanding.

Shauna Grant & an actual storyline...
evildead197825 September 2004
This, my friends, in when porn was porn...Suzie Superstar looked as if it actually may have had a budget & writers who knew how to write a story! Shauna Grant is truly one of the most beautiful performers that has ever worked in the adult industry & although she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, you can see that she's giving it her best shot in this one... For those of you interested in this type of film, this is a very good study in the type of "story + porno" films Burt Reynolds was trying so hard to make in "Boogie Nights" It's also highly recommended to any fans of Shauna Grant, a shining star who burned out too quickly...it would be interesting to see what she would be doing today had things been different...hmmm.

Great early 80's porno...again, they just don't make them like that anymore!

Yes, Virginia, Dirty Movies Did Have Plots
Foggy-74 July 1999
Shauna Grant as Suzie Superstar, a pop singing sensation with a corrupt manager but faithful friends. Somewhat gritty much like all adult movies of the period, but enjoyably dirty, with surprisingly decent singing.

Got Into My Head At 14, And Never Got Out!
fuadkhan200222 November 2020
The year was 1988, I happened to visit a rotten bully/forced friend of mine at 14, and he showed me this movie to haunt me for the rest of my life. The version I saw was actually dubbed in some European language, French, German, Swiss, I am not sure, but it came to be fondly remembered by my class mates as " The French". The car scene that started it out has to be the most intensely erotic encounter I have ever experienced on celluloid. Just looking at Gayle Sterling's facial expressions while she is having sex with Ron Jeremy were enough to bring me to a climax! Throw in Stephanie Taylor/Laurie Smith in the car's backseat with them, and you have the hottest threesome of that era. Adding to sexual excitement vastly are Gayle Sterling's outfit and the arm choker and hairdo, along with her consummate cock sucking skills and intense eye contact she makes with Jeremy along with some serious kissing. For me, she is the stand-out performer in the entire movie, the rest to come just a quick browse-over. Like I said, got into my head at 14 and never got out. Am 45 now.

Some good Shuana Grant, great Laurie Smith, Laura Lozare
Rubinski17 June 1999
Shuana's scene with John Leslie is one of the dirtier scenes that she has done. Throw in another one with her and Joey Silvera. Laurie Smith looks great, even in the back of a dark car with a hedgehog(Ron Jeremy), and Laura Lozare's scene with John was also very good.

Some of Shauna Grant's most expressive scenes!
Hardin3 June 1999
Although Shauna Grant had a definite distaste for the movies she did, her "disgust" comes through as pure ecstasy in this film.
