  • As music plays and occurring on a darkened night, a man in a horse-drawn carriage hears the sound of a sword being drawn from its sheath and then being used on his driver. We then see that the driver's head is gone and the man runs into an adjacent cornfield. He then looks around as he hears something behind him as well as the sword being drawn again. We then briefly see his head being cut off and blood splatters onto a jack-o-lantern.
  • As a man in the equivalent of a hunter's blind/lookout post awaits the horseman, the torches in front of him suddenly go out. We then hear a gunshot and then see the man running through the woods until he's beheaded by the horseman (and we then see a close-up of the severed head).
  • Crane has a flashback where he hears a voice calling his name from inside something resembling an upright sarcophagus. When he opens it, his mother's body falls from it (along with a lot of blood). This causes Crane to back up and have his hands land on a chair's armrests covered in sharp spikes (resulting in many bloody puncture wounds on his hands).
  • Cutting open a hole in a tree that bleeds blood, Crane and the others are suddenly surprised by the sight of many bloody, severed heads inside it.
  • The film is atmospheric and intense throughout. There are many discussions and depictions of death, betrayal, headless bodies and graphic decapitations. In spite of this, the movie also has a camp and darkly comedic undertone to it, so nothing in this movie should traumatise mature viewers.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • The Headless Horseman decapitates people consistently throughout the film. They can vary in terms of graphic intensity, with some containing no blood at all, and others contains tons of blood and gore. Some of these are levied by moments of black comedy, as the hero is very squeamish and often faints in fear.
  • A woman kills another woman with an ax. The actual death is offscreen but blood splatters on the face of the murderer.
  • Two men die in one scene. One is hit in the head with a wooden cross by the town pastor to hide secrets from another character. The pastor is shot immediately after either by accident or out of fear of the character with the gun.
  • A graphic scene where a man slams a crucifix on a another mans head, killing him. Blood is seen. Immediately following this, the killer is shot with blood spraying out. Following that, the shooter is impaled by a large stake, with blood spraying out. He is then pulled through a window, and gets his head chopped off.
  • Towards the end of the movie, the horseman reattaches his head, which is just a skeleton head. His flesh starts to come back. This scene is pretty graphic as muscles, tendons, and flesh start to grow around the skull. When his flesh is fully formed, he violently kisses a woman, biting her lips and tearing them. Blood squirts out. He then rides his horse into a haunted tree which swallows him. Blood sprays out of the tree.
  • Very bloody movie the blood is bright red we see many scenes of a horseman chopping off people's heads and bringing them with him. We see someone opening up a dead body with blood everywhere.
  • The gore itself, although graphic, is stylized in an over the top manner, similar to a later film made by Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Many characters are murdered including a young child, witchcraft is a common theme
  • A jump-scare about halfway through the movie when ichabod and young masbeth are in the woods visiting a witch/fortune teller. She has a veil covering her face, she cuts the head off a live bat, and then performs a spell while chaining herself to the table. After a few moments of silence she jumps out at Icabod with a gruesome zombie like face that has no eyeballs and speaks in a possessed sounding voice.
