“Japan’s darkest secret has become America’s newest nightmare.”
I am a massive fan of the original Guinea Pig series (ギニーピッグ Ginī Piggu). As an aspiring (yet ultimately procrastinating) filmmaker, I found the series of shockers to be crude, yet ultimately influential. I rank the series up their with the early films of Richard Kern (Thrust in Me). When I found out that we were getting an American revival of the series, I was skeptical. Then, as the Indiegogo campaign began and I started seeing names like cult director Jim Van Bebber (The Manson Family), special effects maestro Markus Koch (100 Tears) and Youtuber / acclaimed rapper Eigh8t The Chosen One attached to the project, I thought...

From director Dustin Wayde Mills (Skinless, Easter Casket, Applecart) comes Her Name Was Torment II: Agony, the sequel to last years runaway underground horror hit.
After a successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo – of which I was one of the backers – which blew through it’s goal to raise 178% of its intended target, Mills has completed filming of his new Crumpleshack Films feature, with an intended Summer 2015 release date.
Once again starring a wealth of Mills’ regular cohorts: Dave Parker, Haley Madison, Erin R. Ryan, Allison Egan and Brandon Salkil to name a few; Her Name was Torment II used some of that crowdfunding cash to hire special effects wizard Marcus Koch (100 Tears, Sweatshop, The Theatre Bizarre, American Guinea Pig) to add that little extra “something” to the films gore-filled scenes!

Most politics in film end up coded, oblique, and vague, and not without reason. The direct, didactic political message can be bracing, but more often than not it doesn’t seem to hold up for posterity very well; the specifics of time get forgotten. The major stories of politics each day end up as nothing more than footnotes the vast majority of the time. When you want your message to be appealing, powerful, and understandable for future generations, it often serves you poorly to be specific. Even as someone who is moderately well versed in American history, I found myself often lost watching Secret Honor, Robert Altman’s one actor movie of Richard Nixon’s private breakdown. The broad strokes made sense, and I was able to glean plenty from it (and Philip Baker Hall giving the performance of a lifetime helped things greatly), but the specifics are lost to the time it was made,...

Disney’s live-action comedy Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, based on the popular kid’s book by Judith Viorst, got little love when it opened theatrically in October. When Melissa Howland reviewed it here at We Are Movie Geeks, she called it “….a boring, cluttered mess.” (read all of Melissa’s review Here)
Watching Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day on Disney’s new Blu-ray in the less-demanding confines of home, I found it not at all a terrible, horrible, very bad experience. In fact, it was a bit funnier than I expected. 11-year-old Alexander Cooper (Ed Oxenbould) and his family (dad Steve Carell, mom Jennifer Gardner) are put in silly, sitcom-style scenarios, and the PG-style calamities are harmless fun. There are sight gags, pop cultural references, and gross-outs aplenty, but they’re done with a hint of restraint and even some wit.

The notorious Guinea Pig film series is apparently paving the wave for an American counterpart entitled, appropriately, American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore. When an e-mail about the trailer floated my way, the "Plot Outline" simply read: "Death." Fair enough. And the trailer? It delivers on that.
It's rather cold and crude, as it should be I suppose, and it features a trio of dudes taking bodies apart. The preview comes across as more of an impressive, albeit hyper violent, special FX demo reel (in this case for Marcus Koch).

Take one infamous series of Japanese gore films; add in YouTube personality and rapper Eigh8t the Chosen One; then mix in direction from Stephen Biro, head of underground horror label Unearthed Films (who officially released DVDs of the Guinea Pig series in the Us); cinematography from one Jim Van Bebber (The Manson Family) and add special effects from Marcus Koch (Sweatshop, 100 Tears) and you have American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore – the first in an American series of Guinea Pig films that both pay homage to the classic gore franchise and are direct “sequels” to the Japanese originals…
In 1986, an infamous Japanese manga artist and a high level actor in the Us, received packages in the mail. One received a video tape. The other, received a Super 8Mm reel of film, a 16 page letter and several photographs. Both watched them and quickly turned the evidence over to the local authorities.

It’s Friday the 13th and a full moon tonight so we let the crazies loose and are bring back one of our favorite staff posts, The Thirteen! If you aren’t familiar with The Thirteen, it was initially conceived to be a Top 13 list of films about a certain topic. Sadly, we started it last September and it fell by the wayside. Read our past two posts:

13 Female Villains & Anti-Heroes in Film

A young boy sees his dad abducted by some unseen force. Three years later a meteor hits in the middle of the woods and brings something icky. Written, directed and scored by Harry Bromley Davenport, Xtro is a demented labor of love. The first twenty minutes are the most chunk blowing worthy moments. Including perhaps the grossest thing ever, walking in on your parents having sex.

Often I have found myself telling my students, co-workers, interns, and assorted horror movie fans that before diving head first into any media that has been described as “depraved” or “disturbing,” it is important to remember one thing: once you watch something, you can never un-watch it. It will stick with you forever like an unpleasant break-up or a bad tattoo. I give this warning with Mermaid in a Manhole. Sure, the abhorrent and stomach-churning description I give here may make it sound tantalizing to some; the fact that it's considered controversial and often labeled as one of the most “extreme” films ever made may rev up that same inner feeling that makes you read banned books, or listen to the music that your parents told you not to. But just remember before you sit down with a bowl of popcorn to view Mermaid in a Manhole: the stuff you...

It sounds like the cutest Saturday night of your life: An Animal Planet special starring internet sensation Lil Bub, in which the adorable cat hosts a sleepover with her best buddies Bunny, Guinea Pig and Pony.
So what did "Lil Bub's Special Special," which aired Saturday (Feb. 8), actually amount to? Mostly just comedienne/cat-sitter Amy Sedaris mugging as hard as possible while carrying on one-sided conversations with some spectacularly disinterested animals. (Seriously, Guinea Pig hid under the covers for most of the half-hour.)
Mixed in with Sedaris' attempts at running a game of charades, a truly bizarre pizza order (yarn and pellet toppings with a side of a moving spot of light, please!) and Bub attempting her first prank phone call, musician Andrew W.K. hosted a show-within-the-show called "Party Animals" that was full of the requisite cute animal clips people turn to Animal Planet for. (Rip guest star Colonel Meow!

Dustin Mill’s The Ballad of Skinless Pete, follows the story of a scientist on the verge of a medical breakthrough. Dr. Pete Peele, believes he has found the cure for cancer in the stomach of a parasitic worm. Desperate to prove his finding to be true in order to save himself from his own skin cancer, Pete pushes forward with human testing enlisting himself as the Guinea pig. Pete injects the “cure” into his body unleashing a nightmare he could have never prepared for in this beautiful return to 80s era sci-fi horror.
If you are one of those types that translate low budget into meaning “bad acting, lazy writing, and bad special fx” this is the perfect film to change your way of thinking. Dustin Mills is an absolute master when it comes to showcasing just how much a filmmaker can achieve on a low budget with creativity and undeniable ability.

While 'Daybreak' dismisses reports that its figures are plummeting, and presenter Lorraine Kelly admits "we're trying to turn it around", there's one breakfast TV sofa alumnus with cause to celebrate today - Mr Roland Rat, celebrating his 30th birthday!
Possibly one of the most confident personalities to emerge from beneath his registered abode of Kings Cross Railway Station, Roland Rat first wriggled onto the airwaves in 1983.
Is it time for the Ratmobile to turn around and deliver Roland back to the breakfast TV sofa?
With his bon mots, irrepressible bonhomie and ease with the A-listers, Mr Rat soon turned the ailing viewing figures of ITV's breakfast show from 100,000 to 1.8 million, and was seen as the "only rat to join the sinking ship" of TV-am.

There may be a slight possibility that standards for movie titles have become more lenient over the years, since we can't really fathom an action movie like this week's "Bullet to the Head" coming out in 1954 with a title like that. No sir.
The Sylvester Stallone vehicle does stick in your head for some reason, so we thought we'd dig in and find the most gruesome, lurid and downright threatening movie titles ever conceived. Remember, the criteria here ain't the violent content of the film itself, just its nastified handle.
15. '8 Million Ways to Die' (1986)
The unlikely combination of star Jeff Bridges, screenwriter Oliver Stone and director Hal Ashby ("Harold and Maude") came up with this neo-noir concoction, which failed to ignite at the box office and ultimately served as Ashby's swan song. The film itself has a pulpy, sub-"Miami Vice" plot about an alcoholic ex-detective drawn into a...

The 6th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival is taking over all three screens of the Factory Theatre for a blow-out four-day event on Sept. 6-9.
Making it’s World Premiere at the fest on the 8th is the highly anticipated President Wolfman, the latest “green movie” by director Mike Davis that he’s cobbled together from public domain footage and feature films and set to an outrageous new soundtrack. The film looks like it promises to be a rollicking good time.
Other highlights of the fest include Guy Maddin‘s latest trippy film noir, Keyhole, about a mobster revisiting his homestead’s old memories; Bob Ray‘s documentary about Austin, Texas’ homegrown Total Badass; Bobcat Goldthwait’s media takedown God Bless America; Michal Kosakowski’s underground murder fantasy documentary hit Zero Killed; Richard Griffin’s funky The Disco Exorcist; and more.

When Kinect launched in November of 2010, it would be fair to say that the line up consisted of very few meaningful titles. Kinect Adventures, Kinect Joyride, Kinect Sports, Sonic Free Riders – these were all Kinect tech demos masquerading as mini game collections. Indeed, the ball smashing game from Kinect Adventures was used to demonstrate Kinect over and over in the weeks preceding its launch.
One of the more notable launch titles was Kinectimals. Admitedly, it too was made up of a number of mini games, but the thread binding them together was stronger than pretty much every other launch title. What’s more, the game’s presentation and charm was such that it was one of the few Kinect launch titles that actually made you optimistic for the platform’s future.
Flash forward to the end of 2011, just over a year after Kinect’s arrival, and the line up hasn’t improved much.

For their 4th annual edition, the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival is pulling out all the stops, spotlighting great local and international filmmaking talent over the course of three days, Dec. 2-4, on two screens at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (McAd).
The fest opens with an ambitious Minneapolis-based move: Tyler Jensen’s 30 Films 30 Days. Working with hundreds of local participants, Jensen and his team completed a short film a day over the course of one month and this feature compiles all of them into one package. Plus, also screening on the same night is the groovy grindhouse horror flick The Disco Exorcist by Richard Griffin.
Over the course of the next two full days and nights, two of the best highlights of this year’s Muff include Usama Alshaibi‘s masterful mix of sex and religion Profane, Stuart Simpson‘s retro-sleazetastic monster flick El Monstro Del Mar!, neither of which are to be missed!

I am counting down the days until the release of Disney/ Marvel’s last superhero epic of this summer cinema season, Captain America: The First Avenger. After the awesome-ness that were the Iron Man films, and the CGI carnvial of Thor, we are looking forward to one helluva film and if you are any sort of fan then you have seen the posters (we blogged about them here) watched the trailers, tracked down the internet gossip and pre-ordered the action figures.
But did you know that this is not the first time that Cap has made the leap from comic book page to silver screen?
It may be hard to believe, but Captain America was one of the earliest comic book heroes to be adapted to film. Back in 1944 a company called Republic, renowned for its B-movies, turned Cap into the most expensive serial they ever made. Serials were short...

The 18th annual Chicago Underground Film Festival is ready to have another monumental year at the Gene Siskel Film Center on June 2-9, featuring a killer lineup with new films from some true underground legends.
First, Usama Alshaibi will screen his latest, most visually stunning and conceptually innovative feature Profane, about a spiritually confused Muslim sex worker trying to recapture her lost jinn — a demon of smokeless fire — on streets of the Windy City.
Then, documentary filmmakers Jeff Krulik and John Heyn return to their hard rockin’ roots with Heavy Metal Picnic, which relives one of the most notorious ’80s weekend parties in the history of Maryland and the world — the Full Moon Jamboree, which if you can remember it means you weren’t there. Plus, Hmp will be screened with Heyn and Krulik’s underground classic Heavy Metal Parking Lot.

Jon Favreau has generated buzz when he confirmed recently he won't be back to direct "Iron Man 3". As rumor started to build up that money issues or lack of cohesiveness might be some of the reasons behind his departure, the 44-year-old set the record straight on what really prompted him to walk away from the billion-dollar franchise.
During an interview with Los Angeles Times, the "Couples Retreat" actor stressed that his main reason for leaving "Iron Man" franchise was to "find something that lights a fire" inside of him as a filmmaker. He also looked forward to get a chance to "blow people away", which he claimed is an easier task to do when a project "isn't loaded with built-in expectations".
Jon furthermore insisted that he remained friendly with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "Marvel and I both came of age together," he explained. "The years that we shared were a pivotal experience.

I've spent a lot of time telling you all about the different aspects of Severin Films' home video catalog and even their theatrical releases. You would think that would be all, perhaps they'd found their niche and they'd be glad to hang out in their comfort zone, but you'd be wrong. Having admirably tackled EuroSleaze, horror, the eternal works of D'amato, Borowczyk, and Franco, and dipped their toes into feature film distribution and production, you'd think they would be satisfied. However, Severin Films has so much more to offer, their future is bright, and I predict that at least a couple of their upcoming releases will blow the minds of home viewers in the coming years.
I never got around to talking about one of Severin's best complete packages, the two disc special edition of Ozploitation biker classic, Stone. A good five years before Mel Gibson hit the wide...

Over at Film School Rejects, Cole Abaius presents a good argument for retiring the term "torture porn," a phrase coined by New York Magazine's David Edelstein in the 2006 feature "Now Playing at Your Local Multiplex: Torture Porn." Edelstein's feature offers plenty of ideas to chew on as to why ultra-violent movies like 'Saw' and 'Hostel' have gained such mainstream popularity, but what's stuck with us is the glib idiom.
As Abaius points out, it's lost all meaning. It's reductive and dismissive, used by critics or viewers to write off movies that they themselves don't find any worth in, as well as their audience. The term can apply to anything from the Guinea Pig films to 'Salo,' and I'm sure there are people who would argue that both contribute to film from a theoretical standpoint.
I'd go a step further, though; using the word porn as...

Cast: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Dean Armstrong, Chad Donella, Gina Holden, Chester Bennington, Rebecca Marshall, Naomi Snieckus, Sean Patrick Flanery, Cary Elwes, Laurence Anthony, James Van Patten
For every large scale tragedy, there are a few unscrupulous individuals who will try to whore it for cash. After 9/11, there were instances of fake 'survivors' that tried to cash in with sob stories. There have been fake vets of the war in the Middle East, and fake survivors of hurricane Katrina.
Jigsaw has been at his game for quite some time now, and apparently he's been torturing and murdering the crap out of tens of thousands of people; this is just a humble estimate, going by all the nameless survivors who appear to tell their story in Saw 3D. NBC has picked up My Life As an Experiment, a half-hour comedy project produced by Jack Black and written by Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith. Based on the best-selling non-fiction book Guinea Pig Diaries: My Life As An Experiment by journalist/author A.J. Jacobs, the show chronicles the adventures of an immersion journalist and how these unusual assignments comedically affect his home life with his wife and two kids. It hails from Jack Black’s Electric Dynamite Prods., Reveille, where Electric Dynamite has a production deal, and Sony Pictures Television. Sony TV-based comedy writing duo Yuspa and Goldsmith will write/executive produce My Life as an Experiement, which I hear landed a pilot penalty, one of the biggest for a comedy project so far this development season. Yuspa and Goldsmith, who have been at Sony since 1997, executive produced and ran the studio's long-running comedy The King of Queens before segueing to development.

A Serbian Film opens with a scene that effectively sets up one of the main recurring themes in the film and also gives the audience a small taste of the uncomfortable and increasingly horrified feeling they are going to experience throughout the 100 minute running time. The film opens on a porn scene which a young boy is watching on video and into the room walks the star of the scene which happens to be the small boy’s father, Milos (Srdjan Todorovic). This uncomfortable but almost amusing Solondz-esque scene foreshadows a lot of the more disturbing scenes later in the film as the it becomes far more disturbing and horrific with scenes that mix children and sex in increasingly shocking ways.
Milos at this point is struggling. Having quit his somewhat lucrative career in the porn industry he does not have the money to support his wife and son but...

Local filmmaker Bob Ray is premiering his latest film, Total Badass, on Wednesday night at Alamo Ritz. Ray, whom you might remember from his previous films Hell on Wheels (the rollerderby doc that played SXSW 2007) and Rock Opera, recently finished work on this feature-length documentary about Chad Holt, who is also scheduled to attend the screening.
I think I should let Ray describe the film in his own words (from his Facebook event page for the premiere):
"Total Badass blazes the true Texas tale of a hilarious, crazy-ass writer/publisher/singer/weed-dealer/sex addict/Guinea pig enthusiast/dad/pirate radio host/raconteur and general man-about-town as he rides out the last six months of felony probation and subsequently must change his ways when a financial crisis befalls his estranged family.

The Alamo Guide
for March 11th, 2010
Oh, SXSW… it’s a rocky relationship, you and I. We have a lot of fun together, you give me free booze and barbeque, keep me out way past my bedtime, get me home safely (most of the time), and then you take me out the next day. Then, near the end of the week, we start fighting. “I’m tired!” I say. “I don’t want your free tacos!” I say (and then eat three anyway). “My stomach has been f-ed up for Days, I don’t want your Southern Comfort!” and then two days later you’re gone. SXSW does this to all of us. It keeps the Alamo Ritz so busy that we have to nix all specialty programming for a week so we can show new movies, so keep that in mind this week.

Bob Ray needs dough to fund his newest documentary Total Badass! Help an Austinite out and take a look at his Kickstarter campaign to donate!
Also, check out their fundraiser screening of the film, Thursday, March 18th at Alamo South Lamar. You can purchase tickets Here!
We celebrate a lot of things at the Alamo Drafthouse. Exploitation cinema, good food, great beer, dance parties, film festivals, but most importantly independent film. We’ve helped a lot of baby films (and I mean that in a very non-patronizing way – I’m talking “baby” versus “gigantor studio films”) get off the ground with screenings, and with our amazing customers and film-junkies spreading news via word-of-mouth. Right now, we’ve got a filmmaker that needs a boost so he can get his documentary off the ground, and we though you’d be the perfect audience to direct this call too.

If you’re both a game-lover and animal-lover, then Xbox Live just added another feature which you may like: pets are now available on the Avatar Marketplace for 240 Microsoft Points ($3) each.
If you’re willing to shell out the points for a digital companion, you can choose from 12 furry (or slithery) generically-named friends: Large Dog, Pug Dog, Dog in Bag, Cat, Siamese Cat, Long Haired Cat, Goldfish, Guinea Pig, Pony, Monkey, Bird and Snake. It is yet unknown the amount of unique interactions each animal can make, but here’s hoping the snake can attack something (though I suppose that’s up to Microsoft).
This Pug Dog is either about to hug or attack. Your call, Microsoft!
Microsoft has also announced there will be limited edition pets, starting this Christmas with a special edition Chocobo Avatar Pet! Final Fantasy fans like me immediately just shivered (in a good way). Better yet,...

As Keith Buckley sees it, Every Time I Die’s new album, New Junk Aesthetic (preview it below), is “kind of, dealing with the fact that there is so much art out there, that you have no idea what’s worth looking at and what isn’t.” If you haven’t figured it out by now, however, Every Time I Die is a band whole heartedly worth paying attention to. The five-piece from Buffalo, New York are nothing short of a force to reckon with. The band—comprised of guitarists Jordan Buckley and Andrew Williams, bassist Josh Newton and freshly added drummer Ryan Leger—is well versed in the art of creating skillful, creative and exciting metal in a scene overrun with dull imitators. Buckley not only provides some of the most recognizable vocals in the genre, but arguably its smartest lyrics, with his heavily satirical and witty observations. What...
